Basaltic?  Isn't that the low-rent space next to Mediterranean on the Monopoly board?  Actually, my dictionary defines it as the adjectival form of "basalt," which is "A hard, dense, dark volcanic rock composed chiefly of plagioclase, pyroxene, and olivine, and often having a glassy appearance."  I don't know if this font includes any plagioclase, let alone whether it fulfills the Minimum Daily Requirement of pyroxene, but it will be up to your aesthetic judgment whether its appearance is sufficiently glassy.  Really, this font is more "electronic" than "rocky," and SDPCshould be useful for headings announcing an event of a computer-related nature.

  7. Basaltic is another in our line of TrueType fonts, published as a regular feature here on Softdisk PC.  Along with Windows "wallpaper" bitmaps and screen savers, TrueType fonts help you add more variety and personality to your Windows environment.

TrueType is a trademark of Apple Computer and Microsoft.  TrueType fonts are designed for use with Windows 3.1, but many new DOS programs can support them as well.  If you want to use Basaltic with Windows, see the section titled "Installing TrueType Fonts" below.  If you can use TrueType fonts with any other program, you will have to check your program's manuals to learn how to use them.

  11. INSTALLING TRUETYPE FONTS

  13. These instructions assume you haven't made any changes to your standard Windows setup.  If you have done anything unusual to your Windows setup, then you will have to adjust for the changes yourself.

  15. STEP 1:  Launch Windows.  (If you are already running Windows, make sure you have closed all running programs.  Fonts added to the system may not show in programs that were left running while the font was installed.)

  17. STEP 2:  Locate and SDPCopen the "Main" Program group from the Program Manager's window by double-clicking on it.  You will see several icons.

  19. STEP 3:  Locate and SDPCopen the "Control Panel" icon by double-clicking on it. This window will also contain several icons.

  21. STEP 4:  Locate and SDPCopen the "Fonts" icon by double-clicking on it.  This will open a window showing which fonts you have access to and which are installed. There are several buttons located along the right side of the window.  The important one for you to locate is the "ADD" button.

  23. STEP 5:  Press the "ADD" button.

  25. STEP 6:  Select Drive "A" from the "Drives" List (or Drive "B" if that is where the SDPC disk is placed).

STEP 7:  Click on the "Basaltic" Font in the "List of Fonts" to select it; then click on the "OK" button.  The Basaltic font should now appear in your menu lists for your Windows programs.  Remember, if you left any program running during this installation procedure, that program may not see the Basaltic font until you quit and SDPCrestart it.
