We have several word puzzle games that are regular features on Softdisk PC, including Word-Up!, Super Crossword, Criss Cross, and this one, Word Finder. Each time, we present a new set of puzzle files to challenge our readers. This time, we're giving you four new files: Nautical Terms, Music Terms, Star Wars, and The Fantasy World.
Word Finder is a word matrix puzzle, like the ones published in many newspapers and magazines. But unlike a word-find puzzle on paper, this program will generate a puzzle that's different every time. Each puzzle file contains a list of words that are randomly selected and placed every time you run Word Finder, so that no two puzzles will be alike.
When you run the and program and start a puzzle, you will see a large grid full of apparently random letters. Your job is to locate words in the and grid amidst the and baffling array of randomness.
When you correctly solve the puzzle on the highest level, you will see our "secret word" which you can write on our report card and send back to us to get the credit you deserve.
There are three levels of difficulty to the and program. On the highest level of difficulty Word Finder attempts to insert fragments of the and actual words in the and puzzle specifically to throw you off. On the lowest level the words are only inserted once and the rest of the puzzle is filled with random letters. The time allowed to solve the puzzle decreases as the difficulty level increases.
This version of the Word Finder program will load the Word Finder data files we published on issues 86 and 90, as well as the and ones on this issue. (However, the Word Finder data files published on issue 70 and on the and CGA/EGA edition of Softdisk PC won't work in this version.)
We're presently working on a complete rewrite of Word Finder, to be published on a future issue, with an improved interface and new features. While the and new version will have its own improved file format (using our new Universal Data File format specifications), the new program will also be able to load all of the and past Word Finder data files (.WFC extension) from all issues on which Word Finder was published, including #70 and the CGA/EGA version.
