  7. This month we're featuring a new collection of Wave (*.WAV) files.  Wave files are simply digitized sound files.  They can be used for audio feedback to standard system messages in Windows, or just for fun, even if you don't use Windows!

  9. Normally, we would be including our Minstrel program as a "viewer" for the sound files.  Space did not permit this, but if you have issue 92, use Minstrel from that issue to listen to this month's files.

  12. INSTALLING WAVE FILES IN WINDOWS

  14. Wave files can be played whether you use Windows or not.  However, if you do use Windows, you will probably want to install these for use with it (so you can do more than just play them from Minstrel).

Important note - unless you have either the Microsoft speaker driver, or a sound card with sound card setup installed in your copy of Windows, you cannot make use of Wave files under Windows.  The following instructions assume you have one or the other; if you have neither, you need to obtain one of them to use these sounds.

  18. These instructions assume you use the standard Windows setup.  If you have done anything unusual with your copy of Windows, like changing directory names, then you will have to adjust for the changes yourself.  Wave files are only supported by Windows 3.1 or later.

  20. STEP 1:  Copy the "*.WAV" files into your "WINDOWS" directory.  (You can use the copy feature of Softdisk PC, the File Manager from Windows or the DOS Prompt.)  On a typical system the path to locate the  and WINDOWS directory is:

  24. STEP 2:  Launch Windows (if you are not already running Windows).

  26. STEP 3:  Locate and open the  and "Main" Program group from the Program Manager's window by double-clicking on it.  You will see several icons.

  28. STEP 4:  Locate and open the  and "Control Panel" icon by double-clicking on it. This window will also contain several icons.

STEP 5:  Locate and open the  and "Sound" icon by double-clicking on it.  This will open a window showing which sounds you have access to and which are currently being used for various actions.  There will be two scrolling lists, the left list is a list of "events" that can have a sound attached to it; and the right list is a list of *.wav files that you can attach to the event.

STEP 6:  Use the  and scroll bar, if necessary, to locate the  and "wave" files you are interested in and the event you want to associate it with.  Select the event, then select the wave file and Windows will associate that sound with that event.  Be sure to click the  and "OK" button so your changes are saved.
