Sounds and music are an item popular with almost everyone. Starting with this issue, we will feature sounds and/or music files on every issue of Softdisk PC. With Minstrel, our standard sound and music "viewer", you can hear the and sounds we will be including each month!
This month we're featuring a new collection of Wave (*.WAV) files. Wave files are simply digitized sound files. They can be used for audio feedback to standard system messages in Windows, or just for fun, even if you don't use Windows!
This month's collection of Wave files includes:
BELL.WAV
BIRDIE.WAV
CHARGE!.WAV
FANTASY.WAV
HARP.WAV
HONK.WAV
HORN.WAV
REVELATN.WAV
RIMSHOT.WAV
SQUISH.WAV
WAND.WAV
Note that these sounds will work better if you have either a Sound Blaster or Ad Lib card installed in your system (or a card that's 100% compatible with Sound Blaster or Ad Lib). But, you can even play them with nothing but the and standard PC speaker, even if they won't sound as nice.
INSTALLING WAVE FILES IN WINDOWS
Wave files can be played whether you use Windows or not. However, if you do use Windows, you will probably want to install these for use with it (so you can do more than just play them from Minstrel).
Important note - unless you have either the Microsoft speaker driver, or a sound card with sound card setup installed in your copy of Windows, you cannot make use of Wave files under Windows. The following instructions assume you have one or the other; if you have neither, you need to obtain one of them to use these sounds.
These instructions assume you use the standard Windows setup. If you have done anything unusual with your copy of Windows, like changing directory names, then you will have to adjust for the changes yourself. Wave files are only supported by Windows 3.1 or later.
STEP 1: Copy the "*.WAV" files into your "WINDOWS" directory. (You can use the copy feature of Softdisk PC, the File Manager from Windows or the DOS Prompt.) On a typical system the path to locate the and WINDOWS directory is:
C:\WINDOWS\
STEP 2: Launch Windows (if you are not already running Windows).
STEP 3: Locate and open the and "Main" Program group from the Program Manager's window by double-clicking on it. You will see several icons.
STEP 4: Locate and open the and "Control Panel" icon by double-clicking on it. This window will also contain several icons.
STEP 5: Locate and open the and "Sound" icon by double-clicking on it. This will open a window showing which sounds you have access to and which are currently being used for various actions. There will be two scrolling lists, the left list is a list of "events" that can have a sound attached to it; and the right list is a list of *.wav files that you can attach to the event.
STEP 6: Use the and scroll bar, if necessary, to locate the and "wave" files you are interested in and the event you want to associate it with. Select the event, then select the wave file and Windows will associate that sound with that event. Be sure to click the and "OK" button so your changes are saved.
Watch for more wave files in the future from Softdisk!
