trip.

^^2

a day.
^Charge it to your credit card
^^4
^Go to another counter
^^5
$EOC
$PUZZLE 2
Catching a bus into town, you are taken as far as Waikiki
Beach just as the sun sets over the ocean. Local surfers
are riding by on road bikes with surfboards under their
arms. Tourists are taking pictures in front of the statue of
Duke Kahanamoku, the famous Olympic surfer. As you watch the
spectacular colors in the sky and the tiki torches on the
sidewalk being lit, you realize you have no place to stay
for the night.
^Go across the street to the first hotel in sight
^^6
^Wander down the street to check out what's there
^^7
^Lay down and relax on the sand and watch the final colors of the sun
^^8
$EOC
$PUZZLE 3
Wanting to see all of the islands, you scan the rates for
inter-island flights. Aloha Airlines seems to be running a
50% discount on round trip flights to Maui.
^Pay the counter clerk, check in your baggage and jump on the next flight to Maui
^^9
^Check out the other airlines to see if they've got deals, too
^^10
$EOC
$PUZZLE 4
You slap down the plastic and are on your way. Hair flying
in the wind, you're headed at top speed off into the
lavender and orange sunset on H1 Freeway. Suddenly you
catch a glimpse of an HPD patrol car, lights flashing, far
behind but quickly gaining on you.
^Slow down to the speed limit and pretend not to notice
^^11
^Pull off into the breakdown lane and wait for the patrol car to pull up behind you
^^12
^Take the first exit and pray that the road is clear so you can ditch the cop
^^13
$EOC
$PUZZLE 5
As you walk down the row of rent-a-car counters, an urgent
announcement is made over the P.A. system. A devastating
earthquake has hit, reducing major sections of the island to
rubble and paralyzing all forms of land transportation.
Inter-island flights are shut off for commercial use.
Travelers are strongly advised to take remaining seats on
any departing flights, as they will otherwise be stranded at
the airport. Your adventure has ended.
$EOC
$PUZZLE 6
You walk across the street to the Waikiki Spiral Hotel,
which is comparatively cheap at $130 per night. You worry
about the limit on your charge card.
^Charge it anyway just to get a good night's sleep
^^14
^Walk back outside and think of another plan
^^15
^Ask for the nearest tourist information center
^^16
$EOC
$PUZZLE 7
Street players give the bustling district a festive air. You
pass by a taiko drum soloist, locals singing Hawaiian tunes
and a brass quartet performing Mozart. You see a four-star
hotel with tall white Grecian columns and a Mercedes Benz
limousine pulls up front.
^Stop to listen to the musicians for a while
^^17
^Take a stroll into the expensive hotel
^^18
^Continue down the street
^^19
$EOC
$PUZZLE 8
You lie down on the beach to watch the sunset. A friendly
Japanese couple walks up and wants you to take their picture
for them. After a brief conversation in broken English, the
husband invites you to a sushi bar.
^Accept the invitation
^^20
^Decline politely, wish them a nice vacation and head down the beach
^^21
$EOC
$PUZZLE 9
You pay your fair and take off to Maui. Arriving in Maui,
you find a huge annual triathlon event happening. All major
hotels are booked solid, no rental cars are available and
there's a long wait for taxis.
^Get into the taxi queue
^^22
^Go out to the main road and hitchhike
^^23
^Inquire about buses
^^24
$EOC
$PUZZLE 10
You see a contest advertisement at the Hawaiian Airlines
service desk. As you step up to the counter, bells start
blaring and everyone congratulates you. You are the 1,000th
customer to inquire at the desk today. You have just won an
inter-island excursion ticket good for three islands and ten
days.
^Accept the prize and board the next flight to Big Island
^^25
^Discuss options with the agent
^^26
^Accept the prize and decide to stay on Oahu for a day or two
^^27
$EOC
$PUZZLE 11
The cop car gains and passes you, apparently on another
mission -- you're clear. You continue on H1 west, getting
farther and farther away from signs of civilization. You
find that, instead of the freeway circling around the
island, it turns into a dark road with nothing more than a
few makeshift houses on beachside and fenced-in land with a
building or two mountainside.
^Turn around and go back
^^28
^Get out and approach the beach huts
^^29
$EOC
$PUZZLE 12
You pull over to the side. The police car pulls up behind
you and a mean-looking state trooper gets out. He asks you
for your driver's license and registration. You realize that
you left your wallet on the rental car agency counter and
you have no identification. The trooper takes you down to
the station and cites you for driving without proper
identification. Frustrated, you protest -- and this angers
him. The fine is $500, the amount of your savings. You must
pay or be thrown in jail. What a lousy way to end your trip!
$EOC
$PUZZLE 13
You take the next exit, and sure enough, lose the cop car --
but you've lost your direction, too. In fact, you've even
lost the road. It's dusk now and the light is fading fast.
Sounds of lush palms swaying in a jasmine-scented breeze are
all that's left in the air -- no car engines, no street
lights. As your eyes adjust to the growing darkness, you make
out what looks like a temple ruin up ahead.
^Turn around and try to get back on the highway
^^30
^Go up closer to get a better look
^^31
$EOC
$PUZZLE 14
You go ahead and pay for a good night's rest. The Spiral
Hotel has a lively bar downstairs as well as some
restaurants. You get your key and go up to the room that is
the size of your home bathroom.
^Fall asleep exhausted from jet lag
^^32
^Go outside again to find a store to buy some snacks and relax that claustrophobic feeling
^^33
^Go back downstairs to the bar
^^34
$EOC
$PUZZLE 15

a refreshing shower you plan your first night.
^Go back down the street to the lively bar
^^34
^Go straight to sleep
^^32
^Wander outside again to find some fast food
^^33
$EOC
$PUZZLE 16
You ask the man behind the desk where the tourist info
center is. He says the tourist info center is already
closed, but the YMCA is right down the street. He gives you
directions and you go check in there for $30 a night. After
a refreshing shower you plan your first night.
^Go back down the street to the lively bar

at you and starts warning you about your trip. This stranger
is psychic and knows secrets about you.
^Laugh, pretending not to care, and keep walking
^^35
^Listen carefully to him and ask questions
^^36
$EOC
$PUZZLE 18
You walk into the expensive hotel. On the other side of the
lobby is a wide verandah with a giant banyan tree growing
out of it. Tables are set up before a view of the stunning
shore. Hula dancers are performing on a stage to the side.
The branches of the tree catch your attention. Facial images
are floating in the leaves. The branches are swaying in
rhythm to the hula.
^Run out of the hotel
^^37
^Get closer to the tree to see if the images are really there
^^38

$PUZZLE 19
A water fountain catches your eye in the international
marketplace down the street. The fountain's spout is a
golden whale that pivots and shoots a gossamer-like mist at
you through its blowhole. The city takes on an ethereal
quality as if it is underwater. People turn into fish and
the shops along the street become a huge coral reef. You
feel your own body changing.
^No choice but to go with the flow
^^39
$EOC
$PUZZLE 20
You accept the invitation and go with the couple. The sushi
bar is high class with a kimono-clad hostess bowing and
serving you. The chefs behind the counter yell orders to
each other in deep, guttural voices. Quickly you become
drunk from the mega amounts of beer and sake ordered. A
sashimi-filleted fish is presented to you, its ugly head
still intact, body still quivering. "Fresh blowfish!"
announces your new Japanese friend.
^Decline a piece, staring in horror at the skinned-alive fish
^^40
^Smile and venture a taste
^^41

$PUZZLE 21
A percussion group is playing on the beach. With a closer
look, you see some of them are in a trance. You, too, become
engrossed in the beat. As you are spirited off to dreamtime,
someone steals your backpack and you don't care. You've
found your bliss with the flower children on the beach and
the adventure ends here.
$EOC
$PUZZLE 22
While waiting in the taxi queue, a team of five rowdy
athletes pick you up from the end of the taxi queue and
carry you out to their awaiting limousine. They stuff
themselves and you into the back and pour open bottles of
champagne over each other, saturating everything, including
you.
^Yell to the chauffeur for help
^^42
^Laugh and go along for the ride
^^43
^Make a beeline for the opposite door and escape before the limo leaves
^^44

$PUZZLE 23
You decide to thumb your way down the road. You are picked
up by a Chinese businessman and his wife in a rented Jaguar.

traffic on the two-lane highway.
^Ask him to drop you off in Lahaina, the main beach town
^^45
^Relax in the leather back seat and enjoy the ride
^^46

a green Mustang convertible -- for two days. You're on a
roll!

^Find the nearest bed and breakfast, park and check in.
^^49
$EOC
$PUZZLE 26
The counter agent talks you into upgrading -- for $200 -- to
a chartered flight that takes you around to five islands
instead of just three. Since the award tickets are free, she
tells you, this is a great deal. The chartered flight leaves
at 7a.m. the next morning, so you get a room at the Airport
Hilton -- another $150.
^Take a luxurious bath, get a good night sleep and board the flight the next morning
^^50
$EOC
$PUZZLE 27
Tired, you check into the nearest hotel and order an early
wake-up call. To make the most of the day, you are at the
car rental agency before 7 a.m. the next morning and find
yourself on a rush hour-packed highway.
^Get off at the nearest exit
^^51
^Look for signs for another highway
^^52
^Follow the flow of traffic
^^53
$EOC
$PUZZLE 28
Doing a U-turn on a dark Hawaiian road at night is not
recommended. A local pick-up truck comes barreling down on
you from out of nowhere and crashes into your car. When the
police and ambulance finally arrive, the other driver is
arrested for involuntary manslaughter. But that doesn't help
you much. You were killed upon impact. No more Hawaii
adventures for you.
$EOC
$PUZZLE 29
Walking to one of the beach houses, bombs, flares and
gunshots start exploding on the mountainside! You see a pack
of pitbulls. Then an ear-wrenching motor sounds from
overhead and you see a black military helicopter coming your
way.
^Run back to your car and prepare to head back
^^54
^Keep going toward the huts
^^55
^Stand still and watch what happens
^^56
$EOC
$PUZZLE 30
The highway has completely disappeared and nothing but a
growing fog is in its place. You've fallen through a rip in
the dimensional fabric and can't find your way out. You are
fated to float on this astral plane ad infinitum. Only
finding the same rip will get you back safely. If you're
lucky, you may find a wise shaman to help you in a century
or two. Better luck next life!
$EOC
$PUZZLE 31
A broken stone wall and a slab of rock is all that's left
of the ancient site. Bananas lay on the rock as if left as
an offering of sorts.
^No one is around and you're hungry, so take a couple of bananas
^^57
^Respectfully leave the offering alone and keep exploring
^^58
$EOC
$PUZZLE 32
You turn in for the night. When you finally wake up late the
next morning, you are gravely ill with the tropical flu.
Your health plan isn't valid out of your home state, so you
end up spending all your money on the doctor's visit,
prescription drugs, a week stay in the hotel along with room
service since you are too weak to go out. So much for a free
vacation. At least you got to stay in bed for a week. No
more adventure.
$EOC
$PUZZLE 33
Searching for some quick food, you find the ABC convenience
store has only spam musubli (rice balls) left for food. You
opt for chocolate-covered macadamia nuts and some guava
nectar juice. As you come out of the store with your sugar
fix, you watch as the local skateboarders heckle the street
girls and the street girls hustle the tourists. Is this what
you expected of Waikiki?
^Go back to the hotel and go to sleep
^^32
^Find a bar to wander into
^^34
^Stand around and watch the street scene
^^59

The psychic man yells after you in a warning tone that you
must heed the island spirit law or face grave consequences.
At the same moment a man with large birds -- cockatoos and
parrots -- hanging all over him walks by. The birds suddenly
go amok and attack you, gouging your face and body. You are
rushed to the emergency room in serious condition. You're
lucky to have escaped with your life and have learned a
valuable lesson in spirit awareness. Don't cry about the
loss of your vacation -- it was a freebie anyway!
$EOC
$PUZZLE 36
This strange seer tells you that your prize to Hawaii was no
accident. He clearly speaks of your stressful home life and
of your ancient Huna roots. He suggests that if you go to
the outer islands, you will understand your sacred life
purpose.
^Ask him more details about the important places for you to visit
^^63
^Demand how he knows so much about you
^^64
^Say thank you and leave
^^65
$EOC
$PUZZLE 37
As you skip out the door, you run smack dab into the
Japanese bride and groom that have just stepped out of the
Mercedes limo. They must be famous, for a bodyguard steps in
and with one swift martial arts move has thrown you into the
gutter behind the vehicle. Your hip is in a paralyzed lock
-- possibly broken. You fall unconscious and the rest of the
trip is history. Waking up hospitalized in a leg cast, it's
too late to even find the attacker to file an assault
charge. End of adventure, sorry!
$EOC
$PUZZLE 38
Kupua people, spirit people with leaf, tree and flower
bodies, live in the Banyan tree and accompany the hula
performers in a parallel, simultaneous world. They are
surprised you can see them, and they slip vines down to
catch you and draw you up into the tree.
^Try to speak with the Kupua
^^66
^Struggle to get back down
^^67
$EOC
$PUZZLE 39
Though you still look the same in your eyes, your body can
flex and expand to move swiftly through the new atmosphere.
Peach and turquoise coral accent the background for schools
of fish, all sizes, textures and shapes. Waikiki is gone.
Golden Whale has come alive and beckons you to follow.
^Go with Whale
^^68
^Stay and check out your new surroundings
^^69
$EOC
$PUZZLE 40
Turning down the repulsive looking meal, the sushi chef
becomes insulted and sternly points to the twitching fillet.
"This fish was born for you!" he insists. The shop has
become quiet and all eyes are on you.
^What would any fool do? Taste the fish, of course
^^41
$EOC
$PUZZLE 41
You swallow the first bite and realize it's pretty tasty.
But by the third piece your indulgence has led you to fatal
trouble. The fillet was not prepared to exact standards, and
you have mortally bitten into the poisonous liver.
Asphyxiated, both you and your host fall to the floor while
his wife and the rest of the customers stare in shock. It
was an assassination plot by the Yakuza owner of the bar to
kill your host. How were you to know you were dining with
mobsters? Sayonara, sucker.
$EOC
$PUZZLE 42
The chauffeur turns around and you see he is a skeleton with
blood dripping from his jaw.
^Guess you're going along for the ride, eh?
^^43
^Adrenaline pumps and you charge for the opposite door
^^44
$EOC
$PUZZLE 43
You go along for the ride. The athletes placed high in the
triathlon event this morning, and the adrenaline is kicking.
The limousine heads around the island to Ho'okipa where a
simultaneous event of world championship windsurfing is
being held. The long vehicle pulls up to a beach where
thousands of spectators are cheering.
^Lose yourself in the crowd away from the wild sports fellows
^^71
^Stick with the rambunctious boys forcing themselves through the crowd to the shoreline
^^72
$EOC
$PUZZLE 44
You try to jump for it. A very dangerous feat, especially
since it is well timed with the limo's peel-out from the
curb and a rather fast truck speeding head on. You're lucky
to get out of the incident with only a concussion and
amnesia. Now if you ever figure out who you are and why
you're in Hawaii, you'll be healthy enough for a new
adventure.
$EOC
$PUZZLE 45
You ask if you can be dropped off, but the man is babbling
and gesturing to his wife in Chinese and totally ignoring
your request.
^Relax and enjoy the ride
^^46
^Speak up for yourself, tapping him on the shoulder
^^46
$EOC
$PUZZLE 46
Suddenly, fire explodes out of the mouths of the couple and
the car melts into a reptilian skin. The Jaguar and the
Chinese couple were actually an illusion created by
Kiha-wahine, the dragon-goddess, in order to catch a lone
traveler (a delicacy by her standards). She is infamous for
keeping personal slaves deep in the mists of Haeakala.
Unless you're a personal friend of Pele's, you won't get out
of this one. See you again in a few eons.
$EOC
$PUZZLE 47
Hilo is a romantic old town with lots of stonework. However,
you're looking for something a bit more exciting. An old man
approaches you and asks you if you'd like to go hiking with
him in Akaka Falls.
^Go with him, leaving at dawn the next morning
^^74
^Continue the adventure alone
^^75
$EOC
$PUZZLE 48
You take a night drive up into Volcanoes National Park so
that you can be there for sunrise. The road is pitch black.
Toward Volcanoes you pass an old woman lingering by the side
of the road.
^Stop to help her
^^76
^Keep going, presuming she's a local
^^77
$EOC
$PUZZLE 49
You go to the bed and breakfast. The young counter clerk
looks a little fidgety as you walk in. You don't realize
until a patrol car pulls up that an armed robber is hiding
behind the front desk. He shoots the clerk in the back,
skips out the back door, and you are witness to a murder.
The police detain you and restrict your travel plans. When
you are finally cleared days later, all you want is to go
home and forget about adventures.
$EOC
$PUZZLE 50
When you board the chartered private Cessna flight, you find
out you have upgraded to a single-day flight tour that stops
for only 45 minutes per island. It's exciting but very brief
and you have spent most of your money that was supposed to
last at least a week. At the end of the rushed day you have
enough savings left for one more night in a hotel and then
go home. A short but sweet adventure.
$EOC
$PUZZLE 51
You get off at the nearest exit. Oh, wow, one of those
hyperdimensional exits! The sky has gone grey and the large
buildings in front of you are gray, too. You pass a sign
that says, "Montauk Research Facility" -- how did you end up
on Long Island, New York? Give up -- you'll never make sense
of this to yourself, let alone anyone back home.
$EOC
$PUZZLE 52
A sign up ahead reads, "North -- Pali Highway" and you go
for it. The highway is steep and takes you into lush
rainforest and fresh air. You're going opposite to the heavy
traffic.
^Stop at the top at the Pali Lookout
^^78
^Keep going

shock. What a bloody way to end your trip.

$EOC
$PUZZLE 56

$PUZZLE 61
You order a drink and walk around the bar. It is actually a

up to you and asks you what section you belong to.

everywhere you look.
^Explore Tantalus
^^94
^Find a way back down to the city

$PUZZLE 71
Now in the crowd, you realize you don't have your backpack
or any of your valuables. They could have been left in the
limo or even back at the airport, you're not sure. You have
no choice but to go to the police station and spend hours
reporting the loss (many others have similar troubles
today). The best you can do is call Mom collect and have her
wire you money to get home. Not much of an adventure.
