Anyone can learn to type or improve his or her typing skill.
All you need is a fun way to do it and Typing Attack III is

letters will fall.

Typing Attack III gives you the option of random falling
letters or four and five-letter words. Plus, Typing Attack
III includes a speed test so you can keep tabs on your typing
performance. Never had any formal typing instruction? Don't

screen (tableau) and the remainder are in a face up deck. You
must play cards from the deck to the tableau and from the
tableau to suit piles--one card at a time. Seems simple
enough...until you hear the other rules. You may only play
cards to the tableau by suit in King to Ace (descending)
order. You may only play cards to the suit piles in Ace to
King order. And you can only go through the deck ONCE. That's
right...once. Try it if you dare.

Normally, Word Up! offers you a chance to enhance your

we scour dictionaries, thesauri, and other compendia of
obscure, abstruse words to separate erudite intellectuals
from the plebeian hoi polloi.
.
But we don't feel like being normal this month, so now for
something completely different... Our Word Up! file for
this month is called Texas Talk (oops, that's "Tawk"!), and
it's designed to have y'all talkin' lahk a Texan! Maybe we
in Shreveport feel bad about them drawing the state line at
a point that misses us by 20-odd miles, putting us in with
the Cajuns of "Looze-ee-ana" instead of the Texans, so
we're making it up by showing that we can be just as Texan
as those on the other side of that line!
.
Anyway, if you want to go back to the more pompous sort of
English spoken in places like Noo Yawk, this version of the

we've published on past issues, with the extensions .WUP
and .WRD, so you can gather them all together and give

Winged Warrior

.
.
In the '70s radio comedy show "Chickenman," the hero was
referred to as the White Winged Warrior. This program has
nothing whatsoever to do with that, but I thought it was
interesting to note, anyway.
.
Actually, in this program a Winged Warrior is the highest,
most exalted rank of knight in a chivalric society.
Unfortunately for would-be armored crusaders, the fictional
society in question has "endured" many decades of peace and
prosperity, limiting the opportunities of budding young
knights to earn high rank by showing their prowess in battle.
.
But an opportunity has just presented itself. Evil aliens
have invaded, and it is now your job to defend the kingdom
against this threat. If you succeed, you will help return
peace to the land (horrors!), but in the meantime you'll get
plenty of chances to exercise your battle skills. It may be

A long time ago we published a program called Big Blue File
Finder. That was back when this publication was known as Big
Blue Disk. When we published an improved version later, at a
time when this publication had been renamed to On Disk
Monthly, the program was rechristened FindMe! Plus.
.
Now, it's back again, with a major revamping to improve its
functionality and bring its user interface up to today's
standards. This brings up the question of what to call it;
since an improved version of the C language is known as C++,
maybe this program should be FindMe! Plus Plus... however, we
decided to go the more conventional route and simply dub it
FindMe! Plus 2.0.
.
Whatever it's called, it will be useful to you as you try to
locate files you've saved somewhere on your hard disk, but
can't remember quite where. Just type FMP filename, like
"FMP letter.txt", and FindMe! Plus will scan through your
directory structure to locate the file you're looking for.

locate any DBase files you have.

Pyramid Solitaire

Here's another challenging solitaire game from the author of
several other games we have published on past issues. This
one is somewhat different from the others, in that instead
of building up tableaus of cards in a straight line, you're
trying to pull them off a triangular structure. There are
strict rules about which cards you can take down, and you
can't get to the ones beyond them until you expose them by
removing other cards. It's quite a challenge, but we're
sure our readers are up to it.

the first VGA version of this game to appear in our

Textwave
.
.
.
.
The Windows community is used to the concept of screen
savers, something they leave running when they're not
using their PC but have left it turned on. These programs
allegedly help preserve the health of your monitor by not
burning it in with one combination of characters. Modern
monitors are probably sufficiently hardy as not to
require this, but screen savers have turned into a modern
form of self-expression, as people leave screen savers
running which express their personality artistically.
.
Now, we provide something like that for DOS users.
Unlike the Windows screen savers, it won't automatically
run when your session is inactive, but if you're heading
out to lunch or a coffee break, you can run Textwave from
the DOS prompt and create a show for anyone who happens by
your PC. Textwave lets you type in a message for the

computer!"

This month, we have two fonts: Klayfelt and Sky Scraper.
.
File name: KLAY.TTF
.
Looking somewhat like clay written on a piece of felt, this
font should come in handy when you're fooling around with
your potter's wheel one day. Okay, so maybe that's not what
it looks like, but it's a rather usable font. Try it! And
if you want to know the real reason it's named Klayfelt,
ask the creator, Jim Kleefeld. (Another contributor, Eugen
Bolch, suggested that Jim must be of German descent
because Kleefeld translated into English means Cloverfield.
Eugen thinks that he tried to make the font look somewhat
like clover, a three leaf clover, or even a field of clover.
Why then the odd name of Klayfelt? Because this is as close
as you get to the German pronunciation of Kleefeld.)
.
.
File name: SKY.TTF

Sky Scraper is an art deco font reminiscent of New York in
the 20s and 30s.

Namystic

What is a namystic? Back in the 20s they were quite popular
among the flapper set. They consist of a triangular
arrangement of letters A through Z with dots by each letter.
.
The puzzle-maker takes the name of a well-known person, place
or thing and draws a straight line from the first letter to
the second, the second to the third, the third to the fourth,
and so on. Then the polygons formed by these lines are filled
in. The shape created is the NAMYSTIC. The task of the solver
is to determine the name of the NAMYSTIC from just the shape
alone. Often the puzzle-maker will narrow it down a little by
giving a clue, such as Bad Actor Turned President.

Sound interesting? Hard? Well, try to solve the 10 we have

this game. You've got to move the boxes and things around

If you've played our Rescue Rover game, this has some of the
same basic ideas, only without the dog to rescue. You move
around on the game field and push objects around by getting
behind them and moving. Be careful not to push a crate
against a wall, as you can't get it away again, since these
crates don't have hand-holds for pulling. If you push one

computer serving as the opponent. But, sometimes you'd like
the challenge of a human opponent (or just don't wish to seem
so antisocial as to always prefer playing against a machine
instead of a person). What do you do then, if there still
isn't anybody in physical proximity who's interested in
participating? Why, just load up Telecards, and get your
friend (down the street, across the country, or around the

Champion Chess
.
.
.
.
Chess is one of mankind's oldest and most respected games.
Computers have added a new twist to this game over the last
few decades, as people wondered if computerized chess
players would ever beat the best human players. Actually,
the concept of a chess automaton goes back even further; in
the late 1700s and through the 1800s, a "chess-playing
robot" made the rounds of various public events. It turned
out, though, that it was actually operated by a midget
inside. The various exhibitors of this "robot" were
fortunate enough to find a succession of diminutive people
with a talent for chess.
.
The late 20th century, however, has brought on the advent
of machines that really can play chess. This started
decades ago with hulking mainframes, but now your PC is an
able chess opponent, given the right software. To this
date, the best human chess grandmasters are still able to
beat any computer, but that's likely to change over the
coming century. Even if no significant breakthrough in
artificial intelligence is reached, the ever-faster
computers are able to achieve increasing results through
brute force. Still, the number of possible combinations of
chess moves is so astronomical that it would take the
entire history of the universe for even the fastest
computer to run through them all, so there is a place for
intuition in chess strategy. Some humans think that this
intuitive factor will forever separate humans from
computers, but still, computers do crunch their numbers much
faster than humans, so even an inferior degree of artificial
intuition can overcome the more-creative human mind.
.
Anyway, if you're a grandmaster, you'll likely be able to
beat Champion Chess, but if your chess skills are at a lesser
level, it will give you a good challenge.

We've already given you a spreadsheet and the beginnings of

productivity software triangle with SD Writer, a
full-featured word processor.
.
If you use your PC to write, whether it's an occasional
letter or memo or the Great American Novel you're working
on in your spare time, you've previously had only a few
choices with regard to what program to write it on. Either
you had to purchase one of those big, complicated, expensive
word processors like Microsoft Word or WordPerfect, which
take up many megabytes of your hard disk, and come with
manuals the size of a phone book; or, you could take the
cheap and easy way out and use the Write program that came
with Windows, which is sorely lacking in features. Or, you
could try your luck with shareware programs, spending big
bucks in online service fees downloading programs which
proceed to annoy you with urgings to spend still more money
to register them.
.
Now you've got a new choice. SD Writer is here, complete,
on this issue. You don't have to spend $499 and take two
hours installing it from 76 disks. You don't have to search
for it among heaps of online material and get nagged to pay
a shareware fee. But you do have access to the powerful word
processor features you need, like multiple documents open at
once, an "undo" feature, and a spelling checker.
.
With SD Writer, you've got the Write Stuff!

Hard? Well, try to solve the 10 we have
supplied or create others for friends to solve. We think
you'll like it.
