  8. This month, we have two fonts: Klayfelt and Sky Scraper.

Looking somewhat like clay written on a piece of felt, this font should come in handy when you're fooling around with your potter's wheel one day. Okay, so maybe that's not what it looks like, but it's a rather usable font. Try it! And if you want to know the  and real reason it's named Klayfelt, ask the  and creator, Jim Kleefeld. (Another contributor, Eugen Bolch, suggested that Jim must be of German descent because Kleefeld translated into English means Cloverfield. Eugen thinks that he tried to make the font look somewhat like clover, a three leaf clover, or even a field of clover. Why then the  and odd name of Klayfelt? Because this is as close as you get to the  and German pronunciation of Kleefeld.)

  24. Sky Scraper is an art deco font reminiscent of New York in the 20s and 30s.

  30. TrueType fonts are published as a regular feature here on Softdisk PC.  Along with Windows "wallpaper" bitmaps and screen savers, TrueType fonts help you add more variety and personality to your Windows environment.

TrueType is a trademark of Apple Computer and Microsoft.  TrueType fonts are designed for use with Windows 3.1, but many new DOS programs can support them as well.  If you want to use this font with Windows, see the section titled "Installing TrueType Fonts" below.  If you can use TrueType fonts with any other program, you will have to check your program's manuals to learn how to use them.

  34. INSTALLING TRUETYPE FONTS

  36. These instructions assume you haven't made any changes to your standard Windows setup.  If you have done anything unusual to your Windows setup, then you will have to adjust for the changes yourself.

  38. STEP 1:  Launch Windows.  (If you are already running Windows, make sure you have closed all running programs.  Fonts added to the  and system may not show in programs that were left running while the  and font was installed.)

  40. STEP 2:  Locate and open the  and "Main" Program group from the Program Manager's window by double-clicking on it.  You will see several icons.

  42. STEP 3:  Locate and open the  and "Control Panel" icon by double-clicking on it. This window will also contain several icons.

  44. STEP 4:  Locate and open the  and "Fonts" icon by double-clicking on it.  This will open a window showing which fonts you have access to and which are installed. There are several buttons located along the right side of the window.  The important one for you to locate is the "ADD" button.

  46. STEP 5:  Press the  and "ADD" button.

STEP 6:  Select Drive "A" from the "Drives" List (or Drive "B" if that is where the SDPC disk is placed).  Or, if you have already copied the font to your Windows system directory, you don't need to select a different drive since the  and file is already on your hard disk. If you copied the entire issue with the  and Copy feature or our Windows setup program, the font will be on your hard disk in the issue directory (e.g., "C:\SDPC106"), and you need to select that directory.

STEP 7:  Click on the desired font in the "List of Fonts" to select it; then click on the "OK" button.  The new font should now appear in your menu lists for your Windows programs.  Remember, if you left any program running during this installation procedure, that program may not see the new font until you quit and restart it.
