This Windows game is a new angle on chess, one of the oldest and most loved games known. This game offers pieces which move like chess pieces, but which add the following elements:
Hit Points - Each piece has a certain number of hit points, and will battle another piece until one or the other is reduced to zero hit points and is therefore dead. The surviving piece may have a reduced number of hit points from the battle, making it less likely to survive the next battle.
Spells - There are a variety of spells available, including the dragon's ability to breathe fire on an opponent. These spells are divided into offensive and defensive spells. Besides the dragon's fiery breath, the wizard can cast either an enchanted missile or a ball of fire at an opponent. The ball of fire does more damage, but costs more magic points. When a wizard runs out of magic, he becomes very vulnurable to attack. The clerics can cast healing or shielding spells to repair damage or to add additional protection from attack, but only to friendly pieces.
The game is over when one of the wizards is killed. Unlike chess there is no "checkmate," you MUST actually take the opposing wizard to end the game.

The instructions which follow assume that you are running Windows from the Program Manager. They also assume that you have copied Medieval Conquest onto drive "C:". If you copied it onto another drive (i.e., "D:"), make the appropriate adjustments in the installation instructions. NOTE: If you have a shell which runs on top of Windows (i.e. PubTech), you may not need to follow the instructions below or you may need to consult the manuals that came with your shell program. If you need assistance, you may contact Softdisk Publishing Technical Support at 1-800-831-2694.
Once the ODM Shell program has created a new directory on your hard drive and copied all of the files into that directory, you will still need to run Windows and create a program item in order to get an icon for Medieval Conquest. Follow these steps:
1) Start Windows by typing "WIN" at the DOS prompt
(for example, C:\WIN, then press Enter).
2) Once Windows is running, go to the Program Manager
Window.
3) If you have an Games Program Group, open it
and skip to step 6.
4) If you do not have a Games Program Group,
select New from the File Menu. When the dialog box
comes up, select "Program Group" and click on the OK
button (or press the ENTER key).
5) Type "Games" in the Description field and
click OK. You will now have a new window inside
the Program Manager Window, and it will be titled
"Games."
6) Select New from the File Menu again. This time,
when the dialog box comes up, select "Program
Item" and click OK.
7) Type "Medieval Conquest" in the Description field;
tab to the Command Line field and type:
"c:\ODM088\Conquest.exe";
then tab to the Working Directory field and type:
"c:\ODM088". Click OK.
NOTE: If you put Medieval Conquest into a different
directory, you need to replace "c:\ODM088" in step
7 with the appropriate directory name. For example,
if the new directory is actually "medconq", you
would type "c:\medconq\Conquest.exe" in the Command
Line field and "c:\medconq" in the Working
Directory field.
Once you have created the Program Item, the Medieval Conquest icon should appear in the "Games" Window. Now you can run Medieval Conquest by double clicking the mouse on the icon.
