Death Soliloquy #1
Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your |1!||
I come to bury |3, not to praise |17.||
The evil that men do lives after them,||
The good is oft interred with their |2;||
So let it be with |3. The noble |13||
Hath told you |3 was |4;||
If it were so, it was a grievous |5,||
And grievously hath |3 answer'd it.||
Here, under leave of |13 and the rest-||
For |13 is an honorable |6;||
So are they all, all honorable |7-||
Come I to speak in |3's funeral.||
|15 was my friend, faithful and just to me;||
But |13 says |15 was ambitious,||
And |13 is an honorable |6.||
|15 hath brought many |14 home to Rome,||
Whose |18 did the general coffers fill.||
Did this in |3 seem ambitious?||
When that the poor have cried, |3 hath wept;||
Ambition should be made of sterner stuff:||
Yet |13 says |15 was ambitious,||
And |13 is an honorable |6.||
You all did see that on |8||
I thrice presented |17 a kingly |9,||
Which |15 did thrice refuse. Was this ambition?||
Yet |13 says |15 was ambitious,||
And sure |16 is an honorable |6.||
I speak not to disprove what |13 spoke,||
But here I am to speak what I do know.||
You all did love |17 once, not without cause;||
What cause withholds you then to mourn for |17?||
O judgement, thou art fled to brutish |10,||
And men have lost their |11. Bear with me;||
My |12 is in the coffin there with |3,||
And I must pause till it come back to me.||
