  4. Loan Accelerator Plus is a program designed to show you the
  5. effect of making additional payments of principal during the
  6. course of a loan.  In addition to this, Loan Accelerator Plus is
  7. a full-featured loan amortization program that allows you to see
  8. and print the amortization schedule of mortgages, installment
  9. loans, and other similar debts.

  11. Loan Accelerator Plus has all the features of the earlier Loan
  12. Accelerator, plus the ability to see the effects of making
  13. individual payments early or late.  Loan Accelerator Plus will
  14. still correctly load all Loan Accelerator data files (*.LAC)
  15. saved under older versions, and in addition, data files saved
  16. under Loan Accelerator Plus can still be loaded into the older
  17. Loan Accelerator (though changed dates on individual payments
  18. will be ignored in this case).  However, all data files must be
  19. placed into the directory in which you are running the program, 
  20. since there is no function to load from different directories.

  23. ^C^IWhat's an Amortization?
  24.  
  25. If you are making payments on a home or car loan, or any other
  26. installment debt, the amount of the payment was calculated by the
  27. bank based on a mathematical determination of the amount you must
  28. pay to cover all the interest at the given rate, and pay off all
  29. the money originally lent (known as the principal), in the fixed
  30. length of time for which you took out the loan.

  32. The amortization schedule is the list of payments from the start
  33. to the end of the loan, with each one broken down by what portion
  34. of it goes to pay off the principal, and what portion is
  35. interest.  Over the life of the loan, the amount of interest in
  36. each successive payment goes down because there is less principal
  37. remaining unpaid, and hence, less money for the bank to charge
  38. you interest on.

  41. ^C^IWhy Pay More?
  42.  
  43. While most people pay exactly the amount of the scheduled payment
  44. every month, this is usually not mandatory.  Most loans (with the
  45. exception of some specialized types of loan with a prepayment
  46. penalty) allow you to pay extra above and beyond the regular
  47. scheduled payment, hence reducing the principal faster than
  48. scheduled, and causing the loan to be paid off earlier and at
  49. less total interest.

  51. You might not realize what a great savings you can achieve by
  52. only a modest additional payment.  At an early stage in the
  53. payback of a loan, most of your payment goes to interest rather
  54. than principal.  Maybe $390 of a $400 payment is merely paying
  55. interest.  Hence, if you pay a mere $10 extra this month, it
  56. doubles the amount of principal you have paid.  These differences
  57. can really add up, since the interest lessens as the principal
  58. balance decreases.

  63. To run Loan Accelerator outside the ON DISK MONTHLY menu, type:

  68. you are using a laptop with a monochrome LCD screen), type:
