The dully glowing mass of dust and interstellar debris hung in
the abyss of space like a bloated spider dangling from an
unseen web. Deep inside the slowly spinning nebula, mysterious
forces were inexorably bringing the material into a spinning,
glowing mass of gas and dust. Against a jewel-spangled
backdrop of distant stars the first sudden glimmer of new
light emerged from deep within the interior of the cloud.
Then, as if gaining confidence from its first attempt, the
light intensified, becoming bright enough to cast shadows
through the dust. The dull-red glow of the interior continued
for long eons, while clumps of smaller sizes emerged in the
spinning periphery of the cloud. These clumps enlarged as they
swept large areas of the dust cloud free of debris, becoming
balls of spinning dust and gas in their own right, although
they were miniscule in comparison with the giant glowing mass
in the interior of the nebula. The giant continued to suck in
gas and dust until its crushing weight created a maelstrom of
heat and pressure beyond imagining. In this cauldron of
interstellar debris, a flash point was reached, igniting a
fire that would burn for an immensity of time. But still, from
the outside, the great mass slept, glowing slightly, yet
seeming little changed. The fire grew until its pressure and
heat radiated out to its very edge. Finally, a blinding flash
announced the birth of yet another star to add to the
countless multitudes of the galaxy. The newborn star
shouldered aside the remaining dust and gasses, throwing them
willy-nilly into the dark abyss of interstellar space.
Finally, only the star and the larger masses around it
remained.
