Windows Wave Sounds
by Todd Lewis and Ronda Faries
This is our first publication of Windows "wave" or Windows
sound files. We hope you enjoy them as much as your report
cards showed you did our Windows bitmap files. These files
are in a common ".WAV" format. Some non-Windows sound
utility programs will be able to open and play them, so even
if you don't have Windows, you may still be able to use
these files.
The sounds included on this issue are:
BLIP.WAV
BOULDER.WAV
GULP.WAV
HA.WAV
LAUGH.WAV
WOW.WAV
We would have liked to publish more, but sound files are
notoriously huge. Look for more on future issues!
HOW TO INSTALL AND USE .WAV FILES IN WINDOWS
STEP 1 - Copy the .WAV files into your Windows directory
(folder) by using ODM's copy function, Windows' File Manager
or DOS commands. Note: your Windows directory is commonly
located at"C:\Windows".
STEP 2 - Launch Windows if you did not install the .WAV
files from within Windows. Skip to Step Three if you are
already in Windows.
STEP 3 - From the PROGRAM MANAGER in Windows, open the Main
Window.
STEP 4 - Open (run) the CONTROL PANEL, then locate and
launch the SOUND utility.
STEP 5 - Use the SOUND utility to assign sounds to your
system's events: asterisk, critical stop, default beep,
exclamation, question, Windows exit and Windows start. You
do this by selecting an event in the left column, then
selecting a sound in the right column--which "hooks" the two
together. You may play the sounds by selecting them one at a
time and clicking on the TEST button.
STEP 6 - Once you've assigned a sound to each event, make
sure an "x" is visible in the check box beside "Enable
System Sounds," then press OK. Note: if an "x" isn't
visible, you won't hear any sounds during system events.
STEP 7 - To make sure your sounds are installed as desired,
you might want to quickly exit then restart Windows,
listening carefully for the sounds you assigned to those
events. Enjoy!
We plan to publish more sounds in the future. If you have
any ideas for sounds that you would like to own and use,
note them on your Report Cards and Mailbag letters. But keep
in mind that we cannot publish copyrighted phrases or music
such as Bugs Bunny's famous "What's up Doc?," Fred's
"Yabba-dabba-dooo!" or The Beatle's "Yellow Submarine."
A NOTE ABOUT SOUND DRIVERS AND WINDOWS 3.1
Using .WAV files in Windows requires a sound driver that
is compatible with your version of Windows and your own
particular hardware. If you have a commercial "sound
card" installed in your system (like the "Sound Blaster")
then you already have such a sound driver installed. If
you only have the standard PC Speaker, then you can use
a Windows PC speaker sound driver supplied by Microsoft.
Simply call the Windows 3.1 Technical Support number
and request a copy of the "Windows 3.1 PC Speaker Sound
Driver." They will want to verify your Windows 3.1
Serial Number, but the actual sound driver is free. If
you prefer, you may be able to locate the driver on
a bulletin board system or from a local user group.
