EDITOR'S CORNER
Hello and a hearty Softdisk welcome to everyone using and reading
this issue of On Disk Monthly--the indispensable monthly software
product for IBM and compatibles.
Some of you have already filed your tax returns. That's just
human nature--"the early bird catches the worm" and all those
familiar adages. The majority of us, however, haven't even
thought (well, maybe once or twice) about gathering all that
paperwork (ugh!) together. Luckily, Tax Assist '91 will take some
of the headache out of tax time by providing you with worksheets
for data gathering, with estimates of refunds or money owed and
with the ability to try out different tax scenarios. We're sure
you'd like to wait to use this program (next year or later), but
the IRS won't let you. Neither will we--check the Tax Assist '91
Help File (F1) for the filing deadline today!

BattleStar is a snazzy, spaced-out cousin to a familiar tabletop
game that we all--even us "part-time" adults--still love. It's
OK to admit that we love BattleStar, too. Play it by yourself or
with a friend. It's straightforward enough for kids to play and
enjoy, yet still challenging for adults. Climb into the cockpit
of your own BattleStar ship and take command of your fleet.
You'll need a good memory for this one, especially when you face
the other side's evil computer!

Dos's Dir command tells you how many bytes are stored in a file,
but that isn't the whole story. File space is allocated in
blocks, not bytes, so to really get a handle on disk usage you
must figure out how much unused space is allocated to your files.
Wouldn't it be helpful to know how much space your hard drive or
floppy is wasting? Wouldn't you like to know whether a set of
files will ^Hreally^H fit on a floppy disk before you try to copy
them? Selective "DIR" is the answer. This utility has excited
every PC-user at Softdisk. Use it again and again, and use the
reports it gives you to maximize the use of your hard drive or
floppy disks.

Typing Attack is a good, solid typing tutor disguised as a really
fun and challenging game! Whatever level of typist you, a friend
or a family member might be, this action-packed program will
challenge you. We recommend this "game" to anyone who would like
to learn to type or to become a better typist. Have you
forgotten which fingers should press what keys? See the Typing
Attack information file for a refresher!

Finally, you've probably noticed that the department names have
changed (to better reflect their content). Gone is the utter
confusion of looking at "In the Mail" for subscription
information and "Bluenotes" for letters! We have also made the
companion files shorter (all the important program information is
now part of the program help files). We're just here to help
you, folks.
We urge you to read the other monthly departments--especially
"Mailbag", which contains letters from our subscribers. Also,
don't miss your chance to learn more about those of us with On
Disk Monthly and Softdisk, Inc. by reading "Behind the Scenes".
Catch you in the act of using Softdisk software next month...
until then, please be in touch!
