Welcome to our third installment of Geotutor. This month we
present Central America and the islands of the Caribbean.
Geotutor is designed not only to teach the location of countries
but to teach a little bit about them as well. In addition to a
paragraph or two about each country, Geotutor gives some basic
information on each locale. This information usually includes
the country or region's formal name and affiliations, its
population, system of government, capital and unit of currency
and a description and picture of its flag. General items of
interest, such as a country's national anthem and motto, its
natural resources, exports, imports and key geographic features
are also included in most cases.
Geotutor can test your knowledge of this month's geographic
area. You may choose between five different quizzes to see how
much geographic information you've retained.
This month we have added a pick-list that allows you to jump to a
country by clicking on its name. Need to find the Cayman
Islands? No problem!
The Geotutor uses a special mouse/keyboard interface that's very
easy to use. Of course we've provided complete on-line help
just in case. Press F1 at any point in the program to get help.
^C^BOutside On Disk Monthly^B
To run ^BGeotutor^B outside On Disk Monthly, invoke the batch
file ^BGEO.BAT^B in any of the following ways:
^BGEO^B - Invoke Geotutor normally.
^BGEO /m^B - Invoke Geotutor in monochrome mode.
^BGEO /?^B - Invoke a pick-list of available video modes to
choose from, then run Geotutor in that mode. If you get a
screen with error #2002, you'll have to use this command from
the DOS command line, MetaShell cannot determine what video card
you have.
^BGEO /E:3^B - If you have a computer with an EGA card and a CGA
monitor and would like to see color, you'll have to issue this
command from the DOS prompt.
^BGEO /C:1^B - If you have a color monitor, MetaShell cannot
determine what video card you have and you have no idea what
hardware you own. This will run Geotutor in two color CGA--a
mode available to all color displays.
These parameters may be issued in any order and in any combination.
Use the /m parameter to force Geotutor to use "safe" monochrome
colors even if it detects a color card. This will make it much
easier to read the screen if you are using a laptop or other
machine that has a color graphics card with a monochrome
display.
When you issue the /? parameter, you will see an initial
configuration screen that lets you choose the graphics adapter,
or input device that you are going to use. Geotutor recognizes
all the popular graphics adapters, including Hercules
Monochrome, CGA, EGA, and VGA. On most systems, the program
will correctly detect the video hardware and run without any
problem.
Press ENTER from the opening screen to select the default
adapter and mode, but if the graphics don't appear to function
on your system or you wish to experiment with other modes
supported by your system, press "D" from the opening screen to
get to a pick-list of other graphics adapters and modes.
Similarly, there is a menu to choose what kind of mouse you have
(if any). Press "I" to get to this menu. A mouse is not
required to run this program, but it certainly makes things
easier.
If you get a message telling you that the graphics driver is
already resident (Error #2001), try removing any TSR's from your
system. The graphics driver used by Geotutor can be installed
as a TSR and therefore checks to see if it is already resident
before running Geotutor. Sometimes it may mistake another TSR
for a copy of itself.
We have found that DR DOS 5.0's EMM386.SYS will cause MetaShell
to return an Error #2001. To fix this, reboot without
EMM386.SYS active. One of the great features of DR DOS 5.0 (and
6.0) is its ability to query you on what it should load at boot
time. Simply place a ? at the beginning of the line and you'll
be asked if you want that line to execute or not.
