Germany borders with France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and the
Netherlands on the west, Switzerland and Austria on the
south, Czechoslovakia and Poland on east, and Denmark on
the north. In 1945, at the conclusion of the Second World
War, Germany was divided into four occupational zones.
The portion allotted to the Soviet Union became East
Germany. The part occupied by the United States, Britain,
and France became West Germany. In 1949 the three zones
were combined to form the Federal Republic of Germany
known around the world as "West Germany". West Berlin,
located within East Germany, was also part of West
Germany. When the communists cut off all land and air
access to West Berlin, the western nations ignored the
blockade in what became known as "The Berlin Airlift".
In the end, a physical barrier was erected to keep East
Germans from fleeing to the west, and after some years,
the East and West portions of the country became two
separate nations. 1973 both East and West Germany were
admitted to the United Nations. In 1989, with the rapid
destruction of the physical barriers between the two
states (including the Berlin Wall) that set off a wave of
sweeping changes throughout Europe, the two countries

The Soviet Union is the largest nation in the world,
occupying more than 1/7th of the land surface of the
earth. It borders more other countries than any other
nation. The countries it borders are Norway, Finland,
Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Turkey, Iran,
Afghanistan, China, Mongolia and North Korea. The Soviet
Union includes 15 union republics. Today, the Union seems
to be crumbling before our eyes as one republic after
another declares its independence. This drive for
independence began with the three baltic republics,
Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia which the USSR illegally
acquired from Germany via a pact between Stalin and
Hitler. After a failed coup in 1991 in which communist
hard-liners sought to regain control, not only did the
baltic republics reassert their independence, but many
other republics, tired of economic weakness and political
rigidity, were quick to follow suit. Russia itself, the
largest and most central of the republics seems to be
battling for control of the union, and no one today can
foresee what, if anything, will be left when the dust
clears. The cold war is finally, irrevocably, over, but
the clean up has yet to begin.

Europe
The last few months have seen dramatic changes throughout
Europe, from the opening of the Berlin Wall to the recent
attempted coup in the Soviet Union. Many European
countries are moving away from communism toward more
representative forms of government, and thus many European
flags may be changed. As we enter the final decade of the
twentieth century, we see the countries of western Europe
banding together in an economic union (the EC or European
Community) even as the once-mighty Soviet Union
disintegrates. It would be naive to think that the
changes that have swept the continent will bring an end to
the woes of the many good people who live upon it, but at
least they seem now to be working together for change. In
the end, perhaps that is what matters the most.
