Certificate Creator employs a sophisticated dual interface
providing full support to both keyboard and mouse. This
interface is far superior to those currently being
promulgated by the "Anti-Keyboard" crowd, and truly gives
you the best of both worlds. When used together, the
mouse and keyboard provide a powerful, convenient, and
intuitive user interface.
The interface consists of three parts: the Main Menu
across the top of the screen, the Toolbox to the left, and
the Workspace filling the rest of the screen.
- Main Menu -
Keyboard users and mouse users will both find a menu that
acts pretty much as expected. A pull-down menu is opened
by pressing ALT with the first letter in the menu name, or
by clicking on the menu name with the mouse. Once a menu
is open, the arrow keys can be used to make a selection
followed by ENTER to confirm it. Press ESC to close the
menu without taking action. With the mouse, a click will
cause the bounce bar to move to the mouse, a second click
on the bounce bar will confirm. There is no need to hold
the mouse button down continuously, and no need to
aggravate your arthritis by quickly "double clicking".
Click outside the menu to close it.
- Mouse Emulation and the Workspace -
How do you do you draw things without a mouse? By using
the keyboard mouse! When a menu is open, the keyboard is
a keyboard. When the mouse cursor is in the Toolbox, the
keyboard is a keyboard. But when neither of these is
true, the keyboard is a mouse! The arrow keys move the
mouse cursor, and the space bar toggles the left mouse
button on and off. Simple!
- Toolbox -
Using the keyboard, move the mouse cursor into the tool
box from one side, then use the Up/Down arrows to select a
tool. Move the cursor out to one side. If using a mouse,
just click on a tool to select it. Click again (on
any except Pointer tool) to specify options.
- Dialog Boxes -
Dialog boxes can contain Action Buttons and Radio Buttons.
Action Buttons will immediately do something when you
click on them and contain keyboard equivalents in
parentheses.
Radio Buttons are used to choose one out of several
options, just like the buttons on an old car radio.
Press TAB/SHIFT-TAB to select an option and press ENTER to
confirm/execute or click/double click an option with the
mouse.
^CUsing Certificate Creator
Now that you know how to operate the controls, here is a
little help in using them.
^CMain Menu
The main menu across the top of the screen includes the
following items: File, Edit, Style, and Help. Each of
these items is a pull-down menu as described above.
If any options inside these pull-down menus are
temporarily unavailable, they will have a slash through
the first letter and appear dimmed.
Main Menu : File - This opens a pull-down menu with the
following options:
New - Delete the current certificate from memory (not
from disk) and clear the workspace.
Open - Load a certificate file from disk.
Save - Save a certificate file to disk with the current
filename.
Save As - Save a certificate file to disk with a
user specified filename. Each certificate is saved as two
files, one with a .CCR extension and one with a .CCT
extension.
Print - Print current certificate to your printer.
Set Printer - Specify your printer.
Save Settings - Save printer selection and current line
style/thickness settings to disk. These settings will
automatically be loaded when Certificate Creator is
next invoked.
Quit - Quit Certificate Creator and return from whence
you came.
Main Menu : Edit - This opens a pull-down menu with the
following options:
Erase - Erase a selected object. If no object is
selected, the frontmost object on the workspace is
erased. Usually, the frontmost object is the last object
added to the workspace.
Unerase - Unerases the most recently erased object.
These two commands work together. The last object erased
can be unerased once only.
Cut - Moves the selected object to the clipboard.
Copy - Copies the selected object to the clipboard.
Paste - Pastes the contents of the clipboard to the
workspace at the current mouse cursor position.
These three commands work together. Cut deletes the
object from the workspace storing it in the clipboard (a
storage place in memory). It can be pasted as many times
as desired. Copy leaves the object on the workspace but
also stores it in the clipboard. It, too, can also be
pasted as many times as desired.
Pull to the Front - Pull the selected object to the front
of the screen. This means it will be drawn last and
appear in front of other objects in the workspace.
Push to the Back - Push the selected object to the back
of the workspace. This means it will be drawn first and
appear behind other objects in the workspace.
Main Menu : Style - This opens a pull-down menu with the
following options:
Text - Open a pop-up menu to specify text fonts and
text sizes. Each selection leads to a dialog box where
you specify one of four fonts and one of four sizes.
Line - Open a pop-up menu to specify line thickness
and line style. Each selection leads to a dialog box
where you specify one of four thicknesses and one of four
styles.
Rectangle - Open a dialog box to specify one of four
rectangle corner styles. Current line thickness and style
are also used when drawing rectangles.
Border - Open a dialog box to specify one of 53 border
styles. A pick-list is available.
Seal - Open a dialog box to specify one of 8 seal styles
including circles and ovals. A pick-list is available.
Main Menu : Help - This opens a pull-down menu with the
following options:
Instructions - YOU ARE HERE! Displays instructions on
how to use Certificate Creator.
About - Displays credits and copyright information.
^CToolbox
The toolbox on the left side of the screen includes the
following drawing tools: Pointer, Text, Parallel Line,
Freehand Line, Rectangle, Border, and Seal.
Pointer - Allows an object on the workspace to be
selected. Once selected it can be moved, resized,
replaced, cut, copied, and pasted. The pointer can also
be used to change the style of an existing border or seal.
Text - Allows text to be inserted at the cursor position
using the current text font and size.
Parallel Line - Allows vertical and horizontal lines to
be drawn on the workspace using the current line
thickness and style.
Freehand Line - Allows freehand lines to be drawn on the
workspace using the current line thickness and style.
Rectangle - Allows rectangles to be drawn on the
workspace using the current rectangle style in concert
with the current line thickness. Line style will always
be solid, never dashed.
Border - Allows borders to be drawn on the workspace
using the current border style.
Seal - Allows seals to be drawn on the workspace using
the current seal style.
- Selecting/Moving/Resizing Objects -
Mouse: To select an object: Click on the edge of an
object in the workspace. Adjustment frames will appear
with resize boxes at the corners.
To move the object: Click again (but not on a resize
box) and hold to get the open hand cursor. Drag the
object to its new position and release.
To resize an object: For lines, rectangles and seals:
Click on a resize box to get the pointed hand cursor and
drag to make the object larger or smaller, then release.
For borders: Click on an outside resize box to get the
pointed hand cursor and drag to change the border size,
then release; click on an inside resize box to get the
pointed hand cursor and drag to change the border
thickness, then release.
You may also use TAB/SHIFT-TAB to select objects in the
workspace. Use mouse emulation keys for moving and
resizing (press space in place of clicking/releasing).
- Replacing an Object -
To replace an existing border or seal on the workspace
with a different style, choose the Pointer tool and select
the object to be replaced, then go to the border or seal
dialog and choose a new border or seal.
- Inserting Text -
After selecting the Text tool, move mouse cursor to the
desired position where text will start and click once.
Enter new text or edit existing text from
keyboard.
Text entry is automatically in overstrike mode. Press
INSERT to insert one space at the cursor position. DELETE
deletes the character at the cursor position. BACKSPACE
deletes the character to the left of the cursor position.
- Drawing -
Click (mouse will become a pointed hand) and hold to start
a line, rectangle, border, or seal, then drag. Release
when the object is of desired size. Once again, if using
the keyboard, press space in place of Click/Release.
