French Tutor is a database of 100 French words and their English
translations. You can quickly brush up on your French by studying the words
and their translations. Once you feel you have mastered the language, test
your new found knowledge with the built-in test quizzer.
^1Main Menu^0
Once you press a key at the title screen, the Main Menu is displayed.
The Main Menu consists of two functions: Learn French and Test Your Knowledge.
Use the <UP ARROW> and <DOWN ARROW> keys to move the highlight bar to the
option to perform. Press <ENTER> to select that option.
^1Learn French^0
After the main menu moves to the left, the Learn French window appears on
the right side of the screen. This window contains two sections: 1) Word List
(upper portion of the window) and 2) Translation Line (lower portion of the
window). The Word List contains words to translate (up to ten are displayed
at one time) and a highlight bar. Use the <UP ARROW> and <DOWN ARROW> keys
move the highlight bar. The translation for the highlighted word is
displayed on the Translation Line.
Initially, the program is configured for French to English translation.
However, you can change translation mode by pressing <F2>. For example, if
you are currently translating from French to English, press <F2> and the
program instantly jumps to the English to French translation mode. Press
<F2> again and you will be returned to the initial mode.
Another feature of the Learn French section is the ability to jump
directly to words that start with a specific letter of the alphabet. For
example, pressing <S> will move the highlight bar in the Word List to the
first word that starts with the letter "S". The computer will beep at you if
you press a letter and there is no word in the list that starts with that
letter.
Press <ESC> to exit this option and return to the Main Menu.
^1Test Your Knowledge^0
Once you feel confident with your mastery of the French language, you
may want to try your hand at a test. Use the <UP ARROW> and <DOWN ARROW> keys
to move the highlight bar to the Test Your Knowledge option on the Main Menu
and press <ENTER>.
The first screen displayed is the Test Configuration window. You may
select the degree of toughness and number of questions for the test at this
point. Use the <UP ARROW> and <DOWN ARROW> keys to move between the
configuration options. Press <ENTER> to start the exam.
There are two Levels of exam. Level I lets you choose between three
possible multiple choice answers, while Level II displays six answers, one of
which is "None of the Above." Use the <LEFT ARROW> and <RIGHT ARROW> keys to
select the type of exam you wish to take.
Initially, the Number of Questions is set to the maximum allowed. You may
change this by entering any value from 1 to 100. If you cannot remember the
maximum Number of Questions, press <F2> and the field is set with that value.
After you're satisfied with the configuration, it's exam time! Press <ENTER>
to start the test.
The Test window appears on the right side of the screen, in the same
manner as the Learn French window. At the top is the current question and the
total number of questions. Directly beneath that is the question (or phrase)
that refers to an English word. Finally, just below that is a list of answers
-- in French! On Level I, one of these answers is the French translation of
the word that is associated with the question. Level II provides a bit more
difficulty by increasing the number of answers and providing "None of the
Above" as a possible choice.
A check-mark is located to the left of the answers. Press the <UP ARROW>
and <DOWN ARROW> keys to position the check-mark next to the one you believe
is correct. Press <ENTER>, the correct answer will flash for a few seconds,
and the program will move to the next question. You may see the current
score any time during the exam by pressing the <S> key.
Use the <ESC> key any time during the exam to return to the Main Menu.
^1How Many Tests are There?^0
I'm sure that this question may have crossed your mind at some point.
The Test Your Knowledge part of French Tutor randomizes the questions and the
answers in a manner that should provide you with a relatively large number of
different exams.
To run this program outside the ^1BIG BLUE DISK^0 menu, type ^1FRENCH^0.
