  8. │ To get you going as fast as possible, we have provided  │
  9. │ this tip and update sheet. It consists of several parts.│
  10. │ First is general background information that will help  │
  11. │ you get started and use Magellan more effectively and   │
  12. │ avoid potential pitfalls.  Following that is a list of  │
  13. │ additions and corrections to the documentation; you may │
  14. │ want to make notes in the printed documentation to      │
  15. │ reflect these changes.                                  │

  29. We would like to think of Lotus Magellan as one of the
  30. easiest to use software products you'll ever try.  First,
  31. the functions have been carefully focused to fit primarily
  32. on the 10 function keys.  Next, the program works with the
  33. files you already have; there is no need to type, enter,
  34. or even import files into Magellan.  You can really be 
  35. productive in the first five minutes you use the product.

  38.         Installation:
  39.         -------------

  41. To install Magellan, place the 5.25" Install and Utilities
  42. disk, or the 3.5" Program, Install, and Utilities disk, in
  43. Drive A and type the following:
  44.

  48. Next, answer the questions asked.  Please do not write
  49. protect the installation disk until after you have installed
  50. Magellan.  Magellan will ask you if you want to copy the
  51. practice and demo files to your hard disk; you will need the
  52. practice files if you would like to do the Tutorial.

  54. You may need to remove some of your RAM-resident programs
  55. from memory before you install Magellan.

  58.         General Notes:

  61. ■ With a Monochrome VGA system, the best Color choice 
  62.   under Options (Alt-F8) Colors is Monochrome for DOS
  63.   and Color for OS/2.
  64.  
  65. ■ Use the Alt-R macro to redraw the screen in case it 
  66.   needs refreshing after certain operations.
  67.  
  68. ■ The DOS commands ASSIGN, SUBST, and JOIN are not 
  69.   supported.

  71. ■ 1-2-3 and the 1-2-3 Viewers:
  72.   * A 1-2-3 Release 3 viewer is included in the 
  73.     product.
  74.   * All labels (text and numbers) in worksheets
  75.     are indexed.
  76.   * Numeric cells and formulas are not indexed.

  83. ■ To load Magellan quickly, you can:
  84.  
  85.   * Define the default startup file group to be a group 
  86.     that lists fewer files.
  87.  
  88.     1. Press F9 (Explore).
  89.     2. Position the cursor on the file group to move.
  90.     3. Press Alt-F2 (Move).
  91.     4. Press Home to move that file group to the top of
  92.        the list, where it becomes the default file group.
  93.     5. Press Enter to save its new position.

  95.   * Or, you may specify a smaller filespec on the DOS
  96.     command line, for example,
  97.   
  98.     MG *             (all files in startup directory)
  99.     MG \WK1\*.WK1    (all worksheets in \WK1 subdirectory)

  107. ■ There are some types of corrupted files that Magellan may
  108.   have difficulty indexing.  You can:
  109.  
  110.   * Repair or delete the corrupted file(s).
  111.   * Or, exclude the file(s) from your "Files on All Drives"
  112.     index filespec.

  115. ■ You may choose to index .ARC files and then search on
  116.   the filenames in the archive.  If you use the "Files on
  117.   All Drives" index, then remove the -*.ARC from the 
  118.   filespec so .ARC files will be indexed.
