PIXEL PUZZLER-PC is an electronic jigsaw puzzle-maker for your PC. With
it, you can load your favorite graphics images onto your screen and divide
them into pieces of varying sizes for scrambling and unscrambling. Incomplete
puzzles can be saved to disk for re-loading at a later time.
You can use the mouse or your keyboard with PIXEL PUZZLER-PC:
MOUSE: Move the highlight bar with the mouse pointer to the selected
item and press the left button, or point and click on the word
"Cancel."
KEYBOARD: Use the arrow keys to move the highlight bar to the selected
item and press ENTER, or press ESC to exit.
With the "Set Puzzle Sizes" Menu, you can select the number of pieces to
be in the puzzle, from 16 to 160. A puzzle can be 4-, 5-, 8-, 10-, or 16-
pieces across, and 8-, 10-, or 16-pieces deep.
The "Choose Screen Picture" Menu lists all valid files in the current
subdirectory or drive with one of the following extensions:
*.PIC,*.SCN -- Indicate standard screen dumps from various sources.
*.BSP,*.BSS -- Indicate screen dumps generated by Brushstrokes,
and contain palette information used by the program
to change its colors.
*.PAK,*.PBL -- Indicate packed pictures from the Big Blue Disk
operating system and from Big Blue Disk programs
using the packed picture format.
*.IFF,*.LBM -- Indicate files using the IFF standard format (.IFF)
or the DeluxePaint format (.LBM).
NOTE: Some DeluxePaint files are not valid IFF files.
Filenames appear in a color different from the one used for the subdirec-
tories. To load a file, move the highlight bar to the one you want, and press
ENTER or click the mouse. To cancel the selection process, press ESC or click
on "Cancel." To change subdirectories, click on a pathname to have the
program search for file again.
In "Solve Puzzle," the program loads the picture and divides it into
pieces in a process that may take a little while. When you are ready to begin
solving the puzzle, press any key or click a mouse button.
Puzzle pieces may be moved singly or in blocks of multiple pieces. If you
do not indicate otherwise, moves in the puzzle-solving mode will be single-
piece moves. To pick up a puzzle piece, move the pointer to the desired piece
and click the mouse button, or press the SPACEBAR or ENTER keys. To place a
selected piece, move it to the new location, then click the mouse or press the
SPACEBAR and ENTER key again to drop it into place. The piece originally at
that new location will be moved to the former location of the piece most-
recently moved.
The "Multi-Move Mode" is activated and deactivated by pressing <M> and is
indicated by the pointer's changing from an "S" to an "M." In Multi-Move Mode,
clicking on a piece changes it from normal to highlighted, and vice versa.
The area activated for a multi-piece move is the intersection of the
highest highlighted piece and the leftmost highlighted piece. When you have
highlighted all the pieces you want to move, indicate with the cursor the
screen position to which you wish to move the pieces, and press the "TAB" key
to drop them into place.
If the pieces will not fit properly into the newly-designated position,
PIXEL PUZZLER-PC will signal you with two beeps, return the pieces to their
former locations, and ready the cursor for you to continue.
When all of the pieces in the puzzle have been placed properly, PIXEL
PUZZLER-PC will beep again and tell you how many moves were required for you
to complete the puzzle.
If at any time you get stuck and want a peek at the original picture,
press <F10>. The original picture will be displayed and the program will
wait for you to press a key or a mouse button to return to the puzzle.
To exit to the Main Menu, press the ESC key or the second mouse button.
The "Load Unfinished Puzzle" option displays a list of the puzzle files
which have been saved on the PIXEL PUZZLER-PC disk. To load a file, click on
its filename. To exit without loading an unfinished puzzle, press <ESC> or
click on "Cancel" just as you do throughout the program to abort a decision.
The "Save Unfinished Puzzle" option also displays a list of the puzzle
files which have been saved on the disk, plus an extra label named "New
File." If you wish to overwrite an old file, click on that filename and the
current puzzle game will be saved under that name. If, however, you wish to
create a new file, click on "New File" and the program will allow you to save
the current puzzle under a new name.
NOTE: Do not enter an extension! PIXEL PUZZLER-PC supplies the extension
"PPS."
The "Exit" option allows you to exit the program and return to DOS.
You can toggle the sound option On/Off from the Main Menu by pressing <S>.
A high tone indicates you have moved a piece into the correct position.
A low tone indicates that a displaced piece has been moved into the proper
position.
