Jorj Dictionary Omega Edition
+-------------------------------------------------+
Jorj Software Co. May 1993
4354 Fletcher Rd. Manchester MI 48158 (313) 428-8010
*------------------------------------------------------------------*
This program is a Pop-Up dictionary for use on IBM-compatible PCs.
The program may be invoked from the DOS command line by typing JORJ
or it may be installed as RAM-resident and popped-up with a HotKey.
Jorj (George) employs a 'soundex' search algorithm and is therefore
most often able to find words based on pronunciation when the search
word is misspelled. Another special feature is the ability to search
the database definitions for the occurrence of a particular word or
portion of a word. This feature will permit you to generate a list of
words having a common element in their definitions or to find synonyms
for a given word. For example one could generate a list of flowers or
dog breeds by scanning definitions on the keyword 'flower' or 'dog'.
Finding a synonym is just a matter of searching definitions for the
base word. As one gains experience using these features, finding the
precise word to use is made fast and easy.
How to use the program.
The command at the DOS prompt is:
Jorj [path] [c] [/[key]] [nd] [fd] [=EQUL]
The program can be invoked with any of the options shown in the
square brackets. They are separated by spaces except for 'key'.
Path: The default DIRECTORY for the database file is \JORJ.
If invoked without this flag, then the program will look for
the database file 'JORJ.DAT' in the directory \JORJ. Therefore
if jorj.dat is located in d:\tom\stuff, then the call would be:
JORJ d:\tom\stuff. If the database file is stored in \JORJ of
the current drive then PATH is not needed.
c-Flag: The default screen color for color monitors is BLUE. This may
be changed with the c-flag. Use R for red, T for tan or B for
black. In the example above, the screen would be blue. To
change this to TAN color, the call would be: d:\tom\stuff t
/Key: The program is made memory-resident by adding the / (slash) flag
when invoking JORJ. This flag may be followed by one or more
characters to define the key combination to use as a Hot- Key.
The slash alone will use the default HotKey as will any invalid
HotKey combination request. The default HotKey is the LeftShift
and Control key combination. Therefore the command: JORJ / is
the same as jorj /CL. The special key characters that may follow
the slash are: C A R and L. These have the following meanings:
C=<CNTRL> A=<ALT> R=<RightShift> L=<LeftShift>.
Restating the above example, if we used the command:
"JORJ d:\tom\stuff t /", the result would be the same but the
program would be made memory-resident ane would be called up with
the default HotKey. To change the above example to use HotKey
<ALT><RightShift>, the call would be: JORJ D:\TOM\STUFF T /AR
Nd: The nd-flag has the form: 'nx', where x is any number 1 to 9.
Use this flag to include a numeric digit in your HotKey.
To re-do the above example with the HotKey <ALT><CNTRL>9,
the call would be: JORJ D:\TOM\STUFF T /AC N9
Fd: The fd-flag has the form: 'fx', where x is any number 1 to 9.
Use this flag to include a function key in your HotKey. To
re-do the above example with the HotKey <ALT><f5>, the call
would be: JORJ D:\TOM\STUFF T /A F5. And..to insall as a
TSR with all defaults except for the HotKey, which you want
as: <CNTRL><ALT><LeftShift>f1, then the call would be:
JORJ /CAL f1.
EQUL: Normally, after JORJ is loaded as a TSR, you will be located at
the DOS Cmd line just as if you had not loaded JORJ into memory.
This is not desirable if you load JORJ from a batch file and ad-
ditional commands follow the one that loads JORJ. In such sit-
uations, the EQUL option is useful. EQUL is the name of the
program or batch file to be executed after JORJ is made resident.
The name is preceded by an '=' sign. If we wished to have JORJ
memory-resident when we run the program DIALOG and do the calls
from the batch file ONCALL.BAT, then the example above becomes a
line in ONCALL.BAT that looks like this: JORJ /CAL f1 =DIALOG
This would invoke the DIALOG program and have JORJ Ram-resident.
Upon terminating the program DIALOG, JORJ would be removed from
memory, because its lifespan will be tied to that of DIALOG. To
do this at start-up, the final line of the Autoexec.bat file
would be: "ONCALL" or perhaps "E:\UTIL\ONCALL".
When JORJ is removed from memory, the current directory is
restored to the directory from which it was originally loaded.
You may therefore, wish to plant a CD command in the batch file
ahead of the line which loads JORJ as a TSR.
The HotKey combination must consist of at least two keys. Either
nd-flag or fd-flag may be used but not both. <Shift> Nx is not a
valid HotKey combination as that would make the corresponding
shifted number an unusable character.
Jorj has 3 modes of operation
The three modes of operation are:
- LOOK-UP Type in a search word and JORJ will display the results
of his search. This includes the root word, its inflected
forms if any, and the definition.
- BROWSE Used to look at neighboring entries. This is necessary to
call up homographs. When more than one word has the same
spelling, LOOK-UP will always display the first one in the
file. To view subsequent entries, the right arrow cursor
key must be used. The PREVIEW window for the NEXT BROWSE
word will alert you if that is the case. Also, when the
homographs are a root word (as a singular noun form) and
the inflected form of another word (as a present particple
verb), then the program will locate the root word, which
has precedence. The other would be located by browsing or
doing a Look-Up on its root form.
- SCAN This mode will search through all definitions and display
all entries which contain the key word you provide.
IMPLICIT SCAN can be used for partial words. For example,
the string "ident" woud trigger "President" as well as the
words "resident" and "incident". EXPLICIT SCAN works only
on complete words and this example would not display any-
thing since "ident" is not a word.
SCANNING is very useful in providing a list of entries which have a
word common to their definitions. The best way to get a good feel for
how SCAN can be of benefit, is to experiment with both IMPLICIT and
EXPLICIT SCAN modes. Try EXPLICIT on: State, President, dog, fish,
Fr, country, Baseball, novelist, composer and flower. Use IMPLICIT
"sea" and "geol" and both IMPLICIT and EXPLICIT with "India".
Remember that SCAN is case-sensitive and the search word must have an
exact match for the definition to be triggered. If you have done a
look-up search, the found-word is retained in the buffer and you may
scan on this word without re-typing it. Simply enter a <CR> for input
immediately after you have entered the SCAN mode.
THE STATUS BOX
The small box on the top line of the display is the STATUS box.
In LOOK-UP mode, the STATUS box reflects the status of its search.
*** indicates an exact match was found.
** indicates a phonetic match is displayed.
* indicates a "best guess" is displayed.
? indicates no possible match or guess.
JUST BROWSING
In BROWSE mode, the STATUS box indicates the number of entries which
are in the active buffer and available for BROWSING. This buffer
contains all words which are phonetically related to the search word.
.. Use the RIGHT ARROW CURSOR to browse forward.
.. Use the LEFT ARROW CURSOR to browse backward.
The lists below are search words and the words found by JORJ.

How many editions are there and what are the differences ?
+-----------------------------------------------------------------------+

We have four separate editions of our dictionary "Jorj".
We differentiate between SHAREWARE and REGISTERED editions and
within each of these we have two versions which relate to how the
operation of Memory-Residency is handled. We set-up a TSR either
by occupying a block of conventional memory (about 84k) or we can
avoid the use of conventional memory and make use of EMS or XMS,
if available. In these versions, the use of conventional memory
is reduced to about 13k. These versions avoid using conventional
memory even if extra memory is unavailable. In this case it will use
temporary disk space which however, has a negative impact on speed.

Our various editions are classified as follows:

ALPHA - This is SHAREWARE and use CONVENTIONAL memory for TSR mode.
It may be copied and shared with others for evaluation.

DELTA - This is NOT SHAREWARE but is the REGISTERED version of
the ALPHA edition. It may be copied only for back-up or
use on another machine by the same single REGISTERED user.

OMEGA - This is SHAREWARE and doe NOT use CONVENTIONAL memory for
TSR mode. It allocates the space it needs from EMS or XMS
areas after loading Jorj. It swaps conventional memory to
this area leaving behind a small kernel to pop-up the TSR.
This version uses EMS space if found and requires about
20k plus the size of Available RAM. If EMS is not found
and XMS is available then about 4k plus size of Available
RAM x 2 is used. If neither is available then a disk file
is created for temporary storage (same size as for XMS).
(Normally, EMS would be about 500k and XMS about 1.2mb.)

SIGMA - This is NOT SHAREWARE but is the REGISTERED version of
the OMEGA edition. It may be copied only for back-up or
use on another machine by the same single REGISTERED user.

+-----------------------------------------------------------------------+
Any other items of interest ?
+-----------------------------------------------------------------------+

Yes, the registered versions in both cases, are superior to their
shareware counterparts in features as well as the size of database.
There are two databases; one is used by Alpha and Omega editions
and a larger database for use by the Delta and Sigma editions.
One of the added features of the registered editions is the display
of syllabication for the root word found in Look-up mode.

All editions are copyrighted and the Shareware editions may only be
kept on a machine for a reasonable period of time to evaluate the
usefulness of the program. After such period it must be registered
or removed from disk. Your requested REGISTERED edition is shipped
upon registration and is available only to Registered Users.

+-----------------------------------------------------------------------+
What about updates ?
+--------------------------------------------------------+

Jorj is updated regularly (at least once a year).
Registered users are notified of major up-grades.

+--------------------------------------------------------+
How can I add to or modify the database ?
+--------------------------------------------------------+

User modifications to the Database are not possible.
This question is often asked so we thought it would
be a good idea to make mention of it at this time.

+--------------------------------------------------------+
So what does it cost ?
+-----------------------------------------------------------------------+

The REGISTRATION fee for JORJ is $25.00

- You will receive your choice of either the DELTA or SIGMA edition.
- You will also be included on our mailing list for update notices.

Subsequent Updates or alternate editions to REGISTERED users is
$8.00 plus the S/H fee noted below.

Note: The Shipping/Handling fee is $2.00 for U.S./Canada/Mexico.
The Overseas S/H fee is $5.00 (always Par Avion).
Only one S/H fee per order.

FOREIGN ORDERS: Please use draft on US Bank payable in US funds.

Site licensing is available for quantity users.

+-----------------------------------------------------------------------*
Anything else ?
+-----------------------------------------------------------------------+

Well yes, there is one more item. It's called JOSE.
Jose is a wordgame and it uses the Jorj database (JORJ.DAT).

If you like wordgames, Jose is both challenging and educational.
He will give you a definition and clues if you wish and you guess
the word he has chosen. Handles one to twelve players. Jose will
keep score for each player. Play it by yourself or with friends.

The cost is the same as other mailings: $8.00 plus the S/H fee.
