  9. This package contains a fully functional copy of E! for Windows, a text
  10. editor primarily designed for programmers but that will be a great help for
  11. any Microsoft Windows (tm) user who has to deal with text files.
  12.  
  13. E! for Windows is a very powerful product that has a very large number of
  14. features. We hope that you'll be as much excited about this product as we
  15. are.
  16.  
  17. E! is distributed as a User supported Software. This means that it is no
  18. free or Public Domain software but that you may give it a try before
  19. purchasing it. Please read the licence agreement contained in LICENCE.TXT.
  20.  
  21. If you use this software regularly, you have to pay the registration fee
  22. otherwise you have to stop using E! after the 60-day trial period and to
  23. uninstall it. Registered users will receive a printed documentation, the E!
  24. for Windows API documentation (the API remains undocumented in this version
  25. although sample Extension DLLs are provided) and will benefit from a FAX
  26. hot-line. You will also receive a registration code allowing you to get rid
  27. of the reminder dialog box and to disable the CRC verification.

  29. The API Documentation is reserved for registered users. However, not having
  30. this documentation will not prevent you from using Extension DLLs written by
  31. registered programmers or distributed by us.

  50. 1. INSTALLING E! FOR WINDOWS

  57. E! for Windows should always be installed from an installation diskette. The
  58. installation program does some initial setup and you may run into trouble if
  59. you merely copy the unarchived files to your disk. We do not support versions
  60. not installed from an original, unmodified installation diskette.
  61.  
  62. If you give the program to others, please give an unmodified installation
  63. diskette (as described below). You may not give away a registered copy of E!
  64. for Windows or a copy of the API documentation.

  68. The package that you have downloaded or received on a diskette should
  69. contain the following files:

  86. Please copy these files (if not already done) to a single diskette (1,2 MB,
  87. 720K or 1,44 MB format).
  88.  
  89. To install, launch Windows (version 3.1 is required) and enter "a:install" at
  90. the File|Run prompt of the Program Manager.
  91.  
  92. A dialog box will appear after some temporary files have been copied to your
  93. disk (they will be removed afterwards). This dialog box allows you to change
  94. the default directories used by E! when installing. Don't change them unless
  95. you have a good reason to do that.
  96.  
  97. Then click on the "GO" button and wait until the installation process
  98. finishes.
  99.  
  100. You should then insert the EW and USER directories created by the
  101. installation program in the PATH statement of your AUTOEXEC.BAT.
  102.  
  103. You may want to install EW in a Program Manager's Group. This is not done
  104. automatically because of some incompatilities with some replacement shell
  105. programs (programs replacing PROGMAN.EXE). We'll try to solve these problems
  106. with future versions of the INSTALL program. You just have to install
  107. EW.EXE. EWX.EXE is called by E! when needed and should not be called
  108. directly. If you do so, results are unpredictable.
  109.  
  110. Once E! for Windows has been installed, please read the documentation
  111. (EW.WRI) at least once (even rapidly). This will give you a good feeling
  112. about the fundamentals of E!. We have tried to make this documentation as
  113. complete and as short as possible. We don't think that you should lose too
  114. much time learning a tool that you are supposed to use everyday.

  116. If, for some reason, INSTALL doesn't work on your system, you can use
  117. COPY72.BAT or COPY36.BAT (depending on which diskette format EW is
  118. distributed) to install the distribution files:

  124. In that case don't forget to do the following:
  125.  
  126. - Set the USER directory from the Control Center File|Directories menu.
  127. - Include EW and EW\USER in your PATH.

  129. This procedure should be used only as a last resort way of installing E!. It
  130. is highly recommended that you use the INSTALL program.

  133. 2. DISK VENDORS

  135. Please read VENDOR.TXT.

  137. Please also read the Licence Agreement. Disk Vendors may not charge more
  138. than $5 (or its equivalent in local currency) for a diskette containing the
  139. installation files of E! for Windows. Also, E! for Windows may not be
  140. distributed on diskettes containing other products unless instructions are
  141. given describing how to build an installation diskette from the distributed
  142. disk.

  178. Attention Registered Users:

  180. The API has been modified and new functions added. You'll find all
  181. necessary information in EWAPI.SUP.

  183. EWAPIIMP.TPU and EWAPIIMP.TPW are no longer distributed. You must delete
  184. your old copies and recompile the new units. EWAPI.LIB is up-to-date.

  187. 5. REGISTERING ONLINE

  189. If you have a Compuserve account, registration online is now possible.
  190. GO SWREG and use program id #586. You'll receive your registration code
  191. within two days through CIS e-mail and the printed documentation by mail.

  194. 6. TECHNICAL NOTES

  196. Technical notes will give you immediate information about specific problems
  197. arising when using E! in certain environments or in conjunction with other
  198. programs like compilers. They will be uploaded as EWTECH.??? text files, ???
  199. being the number of the Technical Note or released along with the EW package.

  202. 7. UPDATES

  204. Information about updates can be obtained from the above mentioned FAX
  205. number.

  207. Updates or fixes may be distributed as patches. Beginning with version
  208. 1.20 of EW, we distribute a copy of PATCH.EXE, the program used to
  209. apply these patches. We will *not* upload PATCH.EXE along with the
  210. patches themselves. Please keep PATCH.EXE in a safe place to be able
  211. to use it when necessary.
