  2. FOR WORDPERFECT 6.0 FOR DOS

  7. OREM, Utah ─ May 11, 1993 ─ WordPerfect Corporation today
  8. announced that WordPerfect 6.0 for DOS will be released June 28,
  9. 1993.  The upgrade, which was announced in March, will ship as
  10. scheduled and will contain additional functionality not found in
  11. earlier beta versions of the product.
  12.      Company officials and resellers alike say customer demand
  13. for the product is already reaching record levels. "We have huge
  14. back orders for WordPerfect 6.0 and expect nothing less than a
  15. huge and successful release of the product," said Linda Kroog,
  16. vice president of products at California-based Merisel Inc. 
  17.      Some of the additional features which have been added to the
  18. latest beta version of the product include drag-and-drop text,
  19. scrolling Button Bars, and separate setup options for the Text
  20. Mode and Graphics mode. A CD-ROM version of the upgrade will also
  21. be available following the initial release of the product.  
  22.      According to WordPerfect developers, 639 user enhancement
  23. requests have been incorporated into WordPerfect 6.0 for DOS.
  24. Some previously announced features include built-in spreadsheet
  25. functionality; WYSIWYG editing; fax, sound and e-mail
  26. capabilities; WordPerfect Coaches; scalable font support;
  27. selectable merge; drag-and-drop graphics; contour text wrap
  28. around graphics; color printing; undo; QuickFinder; the ability
  29. to have nine documents open at a time; enhanced envelope and
  30. label creation; and more powerful macro capabilities.
  31.      Customers who purchase earlier versions of WordPerfect for
  32. DOS during the 30 days before or after version 6.0 is released
  33. can upgrade for free. Customers who meet the free upgrade
  34. guidelines will have 60 days after the product is released to
  35. take advantage of the free upgrade window.
  36.      WordPerfect 6.0 for DOS will have a suggested retail price
  37. of $495 for a full package. Full package upgrades for existing
  38. WordPerfect customers will have a suggested retail price of $129.
  39. A competitive trade-up package will also be available for $149 to
  40. customers who own a competing word processing package.

  54. OREM, Utah  March 24, 1993  WordPerfect Corporation officially introduced
  55. WordPerfect 6.0 for DOS today, the first upgrade in more than three years 
  56. to the company's best-selling DOS word processor. The new version, scheduled
  57. to be released later this spring, was unveiled during press conferences in
  58. Germany, Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States.

  60.       Version 6.0 is the successor to WordPerfect 5.1 for DOS. Version 5.1 
  61. has consistently been a best seller for the company since its introduction 
  62. in 1989.  That trend continued in 1992, as WordPerfect 5.1 for DOS outsold 
  63. all other software applications.

  65.       "Like version 5.1, WordPerfect 6.0 for DOS will set a new standard in 
  66. information processing," said Alan Ashton, president of WordPerfect 
  67. Corporation. "The hundreds of new and enhanced features in WordPerfect 6.0 
  68. allow people to accomplish tasks never before possible with a word processor,"
  69. said Ashton.

  71.       Spreadsheet functionality, for example, is now built into WordPerfect. 
  72. Computing functions and cell formatting features are now a part of Tables 
  73. and allow users to accomplish most spreadsheet functions without having to 
  74. use a separate spreadsheet package.

  76.       WordPerfect 6.0 users will also be able to fax directly from within 
  77. WordPerfect. Version 6.0 supports FaxBIOS technology and will ship with 
  78. the necessary drivers for Class1, Class 2, or CAS-compliant fax devices.

  80.       "WordPerfect 6.0 for DOS is a product that goes beyond word processing 
  81. by providing solutions to a variety of day-to-day tasks," said Todd Ashman, 
  82. product marketing director for WordPerfect for DOS. "The new fax, sound, 
  83. e-mail and spreadsheet capabilities found in this upgrade help make 
  84. WordPerfect the application from which all personal computing originates."

  86.       Version 6.0 is also the first DOS word processor from WordPerfect 
  87. Corporation to be fully developed using the new WordPerfect Usability 
  88. Center. "Usability testing helped us to develop a new version of 
  89. WordPerfect which is not only more powerful, but easier to use than 
  90. competing word processors," said Jim Millecam, director of WordPerfect 
  91. development.

  93.       "The new WordPerfect Coach feature, for example, takes WordPerfect 
  94. ease-of-use to a new level and is unavailable in any other word processing
  95. application," said Millecam.

  97.       The Coach feature allows users to access their own personal tutor 
  98. for selected functions. The Coach will then guide the user by giving 
  99. step-by-step instructions regarding how to execute the specific function.

  101.       Hundreds of other user enhancement requests have been added to the 
  102. product. A few of the most powerful new additions include:

  104. WYSIWYG Editing
  105. Users can choose among three different interface modes while editing. 
  106. The Text Mode is similar to the only mode currently available in version 5.1. 
  107. Working in Graphics Mode allows users to see a graphical representation of 
  108. fonts, graphics, colors etc. The Page Mode offers the same functionality 
  109. as the Graphics Mode, but also shows headers, footers, footnotes, page 
  110. numbers etc. All three modes are fully editable, mouse compatible and 
  111. can be accessed at any time in the program.

  113. Scalable Fonts
  114. WordPerfect 6.0 supports four types of scalable fonts: Type 1, Intellifont,
  115. TrueType and Bitstream Speedo. WPFI, a utility that ships with the product, 
  116. will install additional scalable fonts if the user desires. WordPerfect 6.0 
  117. for DOS will also ship with a number of customized scalable WordPerfect 
  118. fonts. The scalable font technology in WordPerfect 6.0 makes true 
  119. DOS-Windows-OS/2 font compatibility a reality.

  121. Selectable Merge
  122. Users can select the fields of the data records they would like included 
  123. in a merge and then set the criteria by which those records are selected  
  124. (all of the Jones who live in New York City, for example.)

  126. QuickFinder
  127. First available in WordPerfect 5.2 for Windows, QuickFinder is an 
  128. innovative way to search local or network directories quickly and 
  129. effectively. Indexes created with QuickFinder allow users to quickly 
  130. search for documents based on user-defined criteria.

  132.       Other new and enhanced features include color printing, drag-and-drop 
  133. graphics, irregular text wrap around graphic images, Grammatik 5, the 
  134. ability to work with up to nine documents at a time, Undo, enhanced 
  135. envelope creation and more powerful macro capabilities.

  139.       "The new graphical interface is a powerful enhancement to the product," 
  140. said Bill Kesselring, an analyst at DataQuest in San Jose, California. 
  141. "The overall combination of new and enhanced features in version 6.0 make 
  142. WordPerfect the easiest DOS word processor to learn and use."

  144.       WordPerfect 6.0 for DOS will have a retail price of $495 for a full package. Full
  145. package upgrades, for existing WordPerfect customers, will have a retail price of $129. A
  146. competitive trade-up package will also be available for $149 to customers who own a
  147. competing word processing package.
