  19.                            INTRODUCTION
  20.                            ------------
  21.  
  22.     Walter Elias Disney was always a dreamer.  Walt wanted to
  23. create a place that would be as much fun for adults as for
  24. children.  This refers to the quotation "There is little adult in
  25. every child, but there is a lot of child in every adult." Mr.
  26. Disney also never liked amusement parks as he thought of them as
  27. dirty and not as a source of family entertainment.  One summer
  28. day while he sat on a park bench Walt thought about a new kind of
  29. family park.  Here is what Walt said about that day: "Disneyland
  30. really began when my two daughters were very young, Saturday was
  31. always Daddy's Day, and I would take them to the merry-go-round,
  32. and sit on a bench waiting and eating peanuts, while they rode.
  33. And sitting there, alone, I felt there should be something built,
  34. some kind of family park, where parents and children could have
  35. fun together."  Walt's dream of a family amusement park became a
  36. reality, and on July 17, 1955 Disneyland opened its doors in
  37. Anaheim, CA and became the "Happiest Place on Earth."  Disneyland
  38. was an instant success, and soon amusement parks around the
  39. country followed Disney's model and began 'cleaning' up their
  40. look.
  41.  
  42.     During the 1964-65 Worlds Fair in New York the Walt Disney
  43. Company displayed their attraction building talents by creating
  44. some shows such as: It's a Small World, and Great Moments with
  45. Mr.  Lincoln.  Headlines in the NY papers read "Walt Disney -
  46. GIANT at the Fair."  With this in Walt's mind, and the growing
  47. success of Disneyland he decided to build the ultimate family
  48. amusement park.  He soon went to work on it and purchased 27,400
  49. acres (43 square miles) of land near Orlando, Florida.  This
  50. piece of land was 150 times larger than that of Disneyland in
  51. California.  Walt made this statement on his TV show after
  52. announcing what he was about to do: "Here in Florida, we have
  53. something special.  There's enough land to hold all the ideas and
  54. plans we can possibly imagine."  Here, not only would a theme
  55. park be constructed but an entire resort complex with hotel and
  56. recreational facilities, and Walt had a head full of ideas.
  57. Unfortunately he never saw his Florida dream come true.  He
  58. passed away in December of 1966 right after introducing his
  59. plans, but his brother Roy took command of the company Walt had
  60. established and gave the go ahead on the creation of Walt's
  61. biggest dream.
  62.  
  63.     The creation of Disney World became the largest private
  64. construction project in the United States ever.  Over 8,000
  65. workers built the Vacation Kingdom.  More than eight million
  66. cubic yards of earth had to be moved, swamps had to be drained,
  67. and canals and lakes had to be dug.  Then, after a lifetime of
  68. dreaming and 4 years under construction, on October 1, 1971 the
  69. Vacation Kingdom of Walt Disney World was opened to the public.
  70. Roy O. Disney used Walt's comment in his dedication speech: "Walt
  71. Disney World is a tribute to the philosophy and life of Walter
  72. Elias Disney...and to the talents, the dedication, and the
  73. loyalty of the entire Disney organization that made Walt Disney's
  74. dream come true.  May Walt Disney World bring Joy and Inspiration
  75. and New Knowledge to all that come to this happy place...a Magic
  76. Kingdom where the young at heart of all ages can laugh and play
  77. and learn together.  Dedicated this 25th day of October, 1971."
  78. What Roy said on opening day can now be found inscribed on a
  79. bronze plaque in the Magic Kingdom.  Walt wanted to call his
  80. vacation land "Disney World", but after his death Roy insisted
  81. that it be called "Walt Disney World".  The resort became an
  82. instant success and in one year it had attracted almost 11
  83. million guests.

  85.     Before his untimely death, Walt had many ideas for other
  86. parks.  His concept of the Experimental Prototype Community of
  87. Tomorrow, or EPCOT as he called it was born shortly after his
  88. plans for Disney World were introduced.  Again on his TV show
  89. Walt showed America his plans.  He wanted EPCOT to be a city that
  90. people could actually live in, a entire community totally
  91. surviving on its own.  No to mention the fact that it would
  92. demonstrate the highest technology available to the rest of the
  93. world.  The city would have its inhabitants living around a
  94. central hub, or main building.  This is how Walt described EPCOT
  95. on that TV show:
  96.  
  97.        EPCOT will take its cue from the new ideas and new
  98.        technologies that are now emerging from the creative
  99.        centers of tomorrow that will never be completed,
  100.        but will always be introducing and testing and
  101.        demonstrating new materials and systems.  And EPCOT
  102.        will be a showcase to the world for the ingenuity
  103.        and imagination of American free enterprise.  When
  104.        EPCOT has become a reality, it's our hope that it will
  105.        stimulate American industry to develop new solutions
  106.        that will meet the needs of people expressed right
  107.        here in this experimental community.

  109.      Eleven years after the opening of Walt Disney World, Walt's
  110. dream of EPCOT became a reality.  On October 1, 1982 EPCOT Center
  111. was opened to the public.  Although EPCOT Center was not as Walt
  112. envisioned, it is a showcase of technology and the world.  The
  113. living community that Walt had envisioned is going to built, and
  114. is expected to open in 1995 not under the name of EPCOT, but it
  115. will be called Celebration.  Almost seven years later, the
  116. Disney/MGM Studios was opened on May 1, 1989.  Here, guests can
  117. experience the movies in Disney style.

  119.     Now in 1993, the Vacation Kingdom is a young twenty-two years
  120. old, housing 3 theme parks, 2 water parks, 12 resorts, a night
  121. club entertainment complex, a hotel complex, a shopping village,
  122. a lot of magic, and much, much more.  Will Disney World ever stop
  123. growing?  Most likely it won't as more and more ideas are
  124. becoming a reality.  Four more resorts are being built now,
  125. construction for a large addition to the Disney/MGM Studios is
  126. underway, and many ideas have yet to be released to the public.

  135.     Greetings Disney Fans!  This book is starting to take off!!
  136. In early February I posted an article about my book on internet
  137. news groups (rec.arts.disney).  Within 2 weeks I had received over
  138. 350 responses requesting a copy through E-mail (one day I received
  139. over 40 requests!!).  Since the book is now starting to gain
  140. popularity I will begin to do the following so that more people
  141. may gain access to my book:  Start a FTP site for those on the
  142. internet, make an e-mail mailing list so people don't have to
  143. request the new version of the book, and in the very far future I
  144. may begin to work on a bound version of the book.  All of these
  145. ideas will take time, but I hope to get the FTP site and the e-
  146. mail mailing list started very shortly.

  148.     This past Christmas my grandparents told my family and I that
  149. they are taking us to Walt Disney World in July of 1993.  We will
  150. be staying at the Vacation Club Resort, and I can't wait!  When I
  151. get back I will have a swarm of new information to relay to you.
  152. (The new information will be in the Sept. or August version of the

  162.      I've been adding to this book for almost three years now and
  163. it seems as though I've just begun.  When I was in high school
  164. most of my friends asked me why I would devote some of my free
  165. time to writing a book.  I usually reply with: "I enjoy it..." and
  166. confusion streaks across their face after that response.  Some day
  167. I hope this material may be sold to a publisher, but right now I
  168. am happy to share the information that I know with others for
  169. free.  This book actually started out as a letter to some friends
  170. in England.  They wrote a letter to my family stating that they
  171. were planning to visit Disney World on their tour of the U.S. and
  172. they wanted me to send them some information.  I sat down one
  173. Saturday after work and typed and typed and typed.  Due to the
  174. mail, my book was waiting for them when they arrived home from
  175. their tour.  So rather than put my work aside I decided to let the
  176. rest of the world see it.  That original letter was about 4000
  177. words, and the book has now grown to almost 19,000 words!  That's
  178. how this whole thing started...
  179.  
  180.      I have been to Walt Disney World six times and it is an
  181. amazing place.  You should know (providing you read the
  182. introduction) that there are three main parks in Walt Disney World
  183. (with a fourth under construction!): The Magic Kingdom, EPCOT
  184. Center, and The Disney/MGM Studios.  I'll describe each theme park
  185. and tell you about each attraction in each park.  The time given
  186. after the description of an attraction is the actual time for that
  187. ride (not including pre-show entertainment).  An asterisk (*) next
  188. to a description means the attraction is a personal favorite of
  189. mine.  An "at" sign (@) next to it, it means it is a popular
  190. attraction to the general public, and you should ride it during
  191. parades, fireworks, right after the park opens or right before the
  192. park is about to close, if the lines are longer during peak hours.
  193. I have divided the book into twenty main areas: When Should We
  194. Go?, Resorts, Contacting WDW Making Reservations and Admissions,
  195. Transportation, Magic Kingdom, EPCOT Center, Disney/MGM Studios,
  196. Night Life, Dining, Shopping, Water Parks, Other Attractions,

  201.     Please feel free to make copies of this book for friends,
  202. family, roommates, neighbors, pets (well, read it first, then
  203. paper train your puppy!) etc., but please don't add your own
  204. information.  This is copyrighted material so if you have

  209. month took me away from my school work.

  211.     I subscribe to the magazine "Disney News" so I am updated on
  212. the newest things going on.  The majority of my writings are based
  213. on my opinion and personal descriptions.  Any extra information
  214. such as bus schedules, statistical data, etc., that I needed
  215. please refer to the bibliography section.

  217.     After my physics teacher read over my book he mentioned that I
  218. was missing one important item: information for the Handicapped.
  219. I never even thought of it, sorry to say.  WDW is VERY well
  220. adapted for wheelchair use.  Wheelchairs can be rented at the
  221. following locations inside the parks: (Magic Kingdom: right after
  222. you walk through the main gate there is a place to rent them.
  223. EPCOT: To the left of Spaceship Earth, after you walk through the
  224. main gate.  MGM:  To the right of the main gates, inside the gas
  225. station.)  Blind people can rent a audio cassette player and a
  226. tape with a description of the park.  I believe these can be
  227. rented at the same locations (I'll find out definitely for the
  228. next release).  Almost any attraction in the entire resort complex
  229. is well outfitted to accommodate wheelchairs.  I will update and
  230. expand this area in the future releases.

  274.                           IMPORTANT NOTES
  275.  
  276.      I will refer to AA many times throughout this book. This
  277.  stands for "Audio-Animatronics".  Audio-Animatronics is the use
  278.  of computerized moving mannequins, and it is used in most of the
  279.  Disney attractions.  The mannequins are quite realistic and
  280.  their movements are incredibly lifelike.
  281.  
  282.     Also from now on, anytime you see WDW it means Walt Disney
  283.  World and anytime you see TTC it refers to the Ticket and
  284.  Transportation Center.

  290. PART I
  291.                     **  WHEN SHOULD WE GO?  **
  292.                        --------------------

  294.     One of the most challenging questions for any vacation is
  295. deciding when to go.  The one thing about Walt Disney World that
  296. never changes is the fact that it is open 365 days a year, so you
  297. don't have to worry about timing your trip around their "season"
  298. schedule.  Personally I feel that October is the best month.  The
  299. temperature is mild and all the kids are back in school and the
  300. crowds are much smaller.  Taking the kids out of school for a week
  301. should not be too much of a problem, but just make sure they get
  302. their homework done BEFORE you leave, (especially high school
  303. students (having been one myself I know) because once you get down
  304. there, they won't be able to find any time to do it.  The only
  305. problem with October is that the parks usually close earlier (8 to
  306. 9pm), rather than staying open to midnight as in the summer.  The
  307. drawback from the parks closing early is that certain parades and
  308. fireworks may or may not be presented.  Call Disney for updated
  309. information on parades and fireworks.
  310.  
  311.     I found July and August to be VERY hot and crowded.  If you do
  312. like waiting in 1-2hr lines in 90-100 degree weather go in July or
  313. August.  Stay away from Christmas, New Years, President's week,
  314. the Fourth of July, etc.  The crowds at this time of the year tend
  315. to be quite heavy.  As for the spring, March - May are excellent
  316. times.  Again, kids are still in school (Florida students get out
  317. in late may so plan accordingly), and the temperature is mild.
  318.  
  319.     One thing, no matter what time of the year you go there will
  320. be thunderstorms.  Florida is known for having rain just about
  321. every day (in the summer its around 4-5pm or so).  Don't be
  322. alarmed at rainy weather reports, go to the parks even if it is
  323. raining because most people stay inside on those days or do other
  324. indoor things.  A little rain never hurts right?
  325.

  327. PART II
  328.                           **  RESORTS  **
  329.                              ---------
  330.  
  331.     There are 12 main resorts in the Vacation Kingdom, each with
  332. its own theme.  Many benefits result from staying in a Disney
  333. owned resort.  For one, you get to enter the park one hour earlier
  334. than the public and you always get excellent service.  I will
  335. give a brief description of each resort, the number of rooms and
  336. try to give you an idea of the prices.  No matter where you stay
  337. in WDW there is excellent transportation.  However, the first
  338. three resorts are by far the most convenient because of
  339. connections to the monorail lines.  (excellent for those staying
  340. with children, ie: no bus lines to wait for in the heat)
  341. Personally I feel you should rent a car no matter what resort you
  342. are staying at.  The car will come in handy when you want to go to
  343. parks outside Disney property, or go shopping at the Disney
  344. Marketplace, etc.
  345.  
  346. The Polynesian Village Resort - The brown a-frame buildings at
  347.     this resort transport you to the South Seas.  Torches
  348.     illuminate the walkways at night, and tropical plants abound.
  349.     Traditional Polynesian architecture can be found here along
  350.     with two pools (one with a slide built into a "lava mountain"
  351.     with a waterfall).  This resort is a personal favorite of
  352.     mine.  The white sand beaches are an incredible romantic
  353.     setting.  The restaurants here have seafood on the menu with a
  354.     twist of Polynesian style cooking.  (GREAT FOOD!!) Not all of
  355.     the food is Polynesian style, most of it is American. This is
  356.     one of the original WDW resorts, but don't fear as it has
  357.     recently been renovated and it looks great! Moderately Priced.
  358.     Boat rental.  By far one of the most if not the MOST
  359.     convenient resort in WDW.  855 rooms.  MONORAIL SERVICE
  360.  
  361. The Grand Floridian Beach Resort - Jump back to the turn of the
  362.     century in this awe inspiring resort that was created to
  363.     replicate the same type of hotel in San Diego.  A Big Band
  364.     plays music every night in the incredible main building.  This
  365.     resort has an 8,000 square foot swimming pool, a health club
  366.     and more.  A perfect setting for a honeymoon, as there are
  367.     very romantic honeymoon suites that overlook the lagoon.  Very
  368.     good Italian restaurant, very expensive upscale restaurant and
  369.     a buffet.  Moderate to Very High prices.  Boat rental, tennis
  370.     and more.  901 rooms.  MONORAIL SERVICE
  371.  
  372. The Contemporary Resort - One of the original WDW resorts this A-
  373.     Frame building has Monorails gliding swiftly in and out of it
  374.     all day.  WDW's largest arcade can be found here with the
  375.     latest in arcade technology.  Many places to eat and drink are
  376.     here along with a dinner show at the top of the building.  If
  377.     you like tall buildings and walking out your hotel room door
  378.     to a hallway overlooking up to 14 stories this is for you! Not
  379.     a personal favorite, but it has great places to eat, shop and
  380.     excellent recreational facilities.  Good all you can eat
  381.     buffet, a great dinner show on the 15th floor, and nice
  382.     lounges.  Also located here are meeting and conference rooms
  383.     for different functions.  Just as the Polynesia this resort
  384.     has recently been remodeled.  83,709 square feet of
  385.     convention space.  Moderately Priced.  Boat rental, tennis,
  386.     and more.  1,056 rooms.  MONORAIL SERVICE
  387.  
  388. The Caribbean Beach Resort - Very affordable resort with a twist
  389.     of the Caribbean.  Located just southeast of EPCOT center this
  390.     resort is cheerfully colored and is easily accessible. Steel
  391.     drums are heard in Port Royale, the main building.  An
  392.     incredible pool is here; part of it shaped like a fort with
  393.     cannons that actually fire little bursts of water.  Very Low
  394.     priced (Highest is approximately.  $95 per night).  For this
  395.     resort I recommend a rental car since it is quite a distance
  396.     from most of the parks.  Unfortunately the only place to get
  397.     food at this resort is at Port Royale; pizza, and food court
  398.     style food.  No "sit down" restaurants.  Bike, boat, etc.
  399.     rental.  2,112 rooms.  Low Priced: As low as $95 per night.
  400.  
  401. Dixie-Landings Resort - This resort takes on the theme of the time
  402.     when paddlewheel boats cruised the Mississippi.  Nature
  403.     surrounds the resort, complete with ponds and natural
  404.     shrubbery.  You can stay in two types of buildings: three
  405.     story plantation homes, or two story bayou buildings.  Bayou
  406.     Bill's Cafe serves up the cuisine, and a large food court
  407.     accompanies it.  2,048 rooms. Moderately Priced.
  408.  
  409. The Yacht and Beach Club Resorts -Two separate resorts but right
  410.     next to each other and both with the same theme.  These
  411.     resorts look like New England seaside resorts from the late
  412.     1880's.  Features of the resorts include sand bottom pools,
  413.     snorkeling, croquet lawn, and more.  Indoor clambakes, and
  414.     five other restaurants are here.  Boat service to EPCOT Center
  415.     is available.  54,000 square feet of convention space is also
  416.     here. Yacht: 635 rooms Beach: 584 rooms Moderate to High
  417.     Priced.

  419. Port Orleans Resort - Are you read for Mardi Gras?  Than this
  420.     resort is for you!  Resembling the streets of New Orleans the
  421.     gras atmosphere surrounds you.  Eat at Cafe Bonfamiles and
  422.     listen to the jazz, or relax in the Mardi-Gras pool where the
  423.     tongue of a dragon is the slide!  Sit down restaurant, and
  424.     food court style eating.  Spas, marketplace dining, and
  425.     cobblestone streets are also found here.  1,008 rooms.  Low
  426.     Priced.  (Approximately the same price as the Caribbean Beach
  427.     Resort.)
  428.  
  429. The Disney Inn - This resort is tucked away in the northwest
  430.     corner of WDW.  It is situated between two PGA tour
  431.     championship golf courses: The Magnolia and the Palm.
  432.     Swimming pools, tennis courts, and heath spas are all here.  A
  433.     nice restaurant that serves a good meal and most people skip
  434.     is here.  This resort has recently been remodeled, and a Snow
  435.     White theme has been added.  Moderately priced.
  436.  
  437. Disney Village Resort Villas - Many different types of townhouses
  438.     can be yours for the duration of your stay.  The famous
  439.     Treehouse Villas are set in the woods and offer privacy.
  440.     Other villas include One-and-Two Bedroom Villas (formally the
  441.     Vacation Villas), Club suites (formally the Club Lake Villas),
  442.     Two-Bedroom Villas (formally the Fairway Villas), and the
  443.     Grand Vista Suites.  Most villas are set on lakes or in the
  444.     woods, and all of them are near golf courses. I recommend a
  445.     car since most of these villas are quite a distance from the
  446.     theme parks.  Most villas have washing machines and dryers,
  447.     along with full kitchens.  Some sleep up to eight people.
  448.     Great for large families.  576 rooms. A rental car is a must.
  449.     Moderately Priced.
  450.  
  451. Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground - Are you driving your RV to
  452.     WDW?  If so you might consider staying here. Hook up your RV
  453.     to full service, or stay in one of the permanent trailers with
  454.     full service also.  Canoeing, campfires, biking, and fishing
  455.     make this resort for those who love the great outdoors.
  456.     Nightly campfires and marshmallow roasts, and daily canoe
  457.     excursions are also here for those who love the outdoors.
  458.     785 sites, 407 Trailer Homes.  Moderately priced.
  459.  
  460. The Dolphin and the Swan - Both hotels (Both near the Yacht and
  461.     Beach clubs) were built by Disney but are run by separate
  462.     companies.  The Swan is operated by Westin and The Dolphin is
  463.     operated by Sheraton.  These are upscale hotels with
  464.     conference halls for big conventions.  A 6,500 square foot
  465.     convention center is here along with a 505 seat theater.  Boat
  466.     service to EPCOT Center is available.  Dolphin: 758 rooms,
  467.     Swan: 758 rooms. High Priced.

  472.                    Reservations, and Admissions

  475.     Contacting WDW is quite easy and they do their best to make
  476. the reservation process as easy as possible.  Call the number:

  481. information line.  Don't be discouraged if the phone isn't

  503.      There are many plans that one can obtain to go to Disney
  504. World.  For first time travelers I recommend that you go through
  505. your local travel agent.  Let them handle the rates, airline
  506. tickets etc, but you should pick out where you want to stay etc.
  507. Disney has so many packages its hard to find one that doesn't fit
  508. your lifestyle, and most can be customized to fit your needs.  The
  509. most expensive is called the "World Adventure Plan".  With this
  510. plan everything is paid for in advance (I mean everything!!).  In
  511. 1989 I stayed at the Polynesian Village on this plan.  There were
  512. eight of us and without airfare it cost $10,000 for 10 days.  It
  513. sounds expensive but here is what is included in that price: All
  514. meals, breakfast lunch & dinner (You can order ANYTHING you want!
  515. (Lobster tails every night if you want!)); Admission to all three
  516. theme parks for 10 days; Admission to Pleasure Island, Typhoon
  517. Lagoon, River Country, Discovery Island etc. for 10 days; All
  518. boat, golf, fishing, etc.  rentals for 10 days; Unlimited
  519. transportation; VIP service (I mean it too!); Gratuity on all
  520. meals; and a whole lot of fun!!  The only items excluded are:
  521. souvenirs, snacks purchased at a stand, alcohol, sundries, etc.
  522. It is worth it if: You are very active and WILL rent boats, golf
  523. equipment etc.; Your party EATS A LOT!!; and you have the money to
  524. burn!

  632.     A. Getting to WDW from Orlando International Airport
  633.  
  634.     This could be a simple task, however, there is a lot of
  635. construction at the airport, which confuses the heck out of anyone
  636. driving a rental car in some place they are unfamiliar with.  Of
  637. course the airport shuttles zooming by at MACH 2.3 really don't
  638. help, but that's another story.  After you have claimed you
  639. luggage, (provided they have not been shipped off to Antarctica or
  640. something like that) grab a sky-cap (not literally) and go down
  641. stairs to the rental car counters.  After you get your car drive
  642. through the parking garage slowly, stop signs seem to pop out of
  643. nowhere.  Be careful merging into the MACH 2.3 traffic on the road
  644. that goes around the airport.  Follow the signs for Airport Exit,
  645. it's not as easy as it seems, somehow you are in the right lane
  646. and the next sign tells you to go into the left!  After you have
  647. exited the airport, (hopefully in one piece) follow the signs for
  648. the Bee-Line Expressway (528 WEST), (don't go east like we
  649. accidently did, it will eventually take you to Cocoa Beach).  The
  650. turn off comes very quick after exiting the airport.  WARNING: The
  651. Bee-Line Expressway is a Toll road.  Bring quarters with you!!
  652. The tolls to I4 amount to approximately $1.25.  (yes, a $1.25 to
  653. go about 10 miles.) Look for the signs for Interstate 4 and exits
  654. for Walt Disney World resort. You want I4 South.  After
  655. approximately 5-10 minutes you will start seeing signs for WDW.
  656. Now here comes the tricky part, follow this table for the correct
  657. I4 exit number:

  668. have to make a left turn onto Hotel Plaza Blvd., this road will
  669. take you directly to the Marketplace, from there follow the signs

  672.     If you take exit 26B you will be put on EPCOT Center Drive.
  673. Just follow the signs to your destination.
  674.  
  675.     While travelling on I4 there will be a sign for the Magic
  676. Kingdom and the exit number will be 25B.  Don't take this exit as
  677. it is a very round-about way and you will have to deal with day-
  678. trippers coming from Tampa.  This may sound very confusing but
  679. once you see a map you will see what I mean, as it all comes
  680. together.  (If you have the map that is included with this book
  681. take a look at it and it will explain the route.)
  682.  
  683.     The signs on Walt Disney World property are very plentiful,
  684. and it is hard to get lost.  Just follow the signs, It might look
  685. like you are out in the middle of nowhere, but you'll get there.
  686. Keep in mind, Disney property is twice the size of Manhattan!  If
  687. you are confused by my directions, ask at any rental car desk for
  688. a map and directions.
  689.  
  690.     B. Travelling within WDW resort complex.
  691.  
  692.     There are plenty of buses running to every theme park, resort
  693. and area of the resort.  The best way to get around WDW has to be
  694. the Monorail system.  Unfortunately, the monorail system has not
  695. been expanded to include most of the resorts.  Here are the stops
  696. for each monorail:

  700.      Resort Monorail: TTC, Polynesian Resort, Grand Floridian
  701.                        Resort, The Magic Kingdom, and the
  702.                        Contemporary Resort.

  706.      EPCOT Center Monorail: TTC, and EPCOT Center.

  708.   The best way to get from EPCOT to The Magic Kingdom and back is
  709. via Monorail. Get on the monorail at EPCOT center and then get off
  710. at the next stop.  This will be the TTC.  From here you have two
  711. options: you can board the ferry and float across the lake or take
  712. another monorail.  There are two choices for the 2nd monorail:
  713. the Resort monorail or the Magic Kingdom monorail.  The Resort
  714. monorail will have short or no lines.  You can only take this
  715. monorail if you are staying in a Disney owned resort. If you are
  716. staying at a Disney resort use your Resort ID card to board the
  717. resort monorail.  The cards are now printed by computer with your
  718. name, resort, and room number (Sometimes stamped with FOR
  719. TRANSPORTATION ONLY). Otherwise board the Magic Kingdom monorail.
  720.  
  721.    Your best bet to get to MGM Studios from your Disney Resort is
  722. via bus or by driving if you have a rental car. However, you are
  723. now able to take a boat from EPCOT, The Swan, The Dolphin, The
  724. Yacht Club, or The Beach Club to MGM.
  725.  
  726.     All buses and boats running in WDW have different colored
  727. triangles (referred to as flags) on the side of them for easy
  728. identification.  One color: solid triangle.  Two colors: the first
  729. is the background, the second a horizontal stripe.  A "w/MK" or
  730. "w/EC" etc means those colors with the letters MK, EC, etc. in a
  731. circle in the center of the triangle. (I know this is confusing,
  732. but once you see a bus you will get it...)  I take no
  733. responsibility for the accuracy of the data provided, so don't
  734. write a nasty letter to me saying how you never did get to the
  735. Magic Kingdom because you got on a bus that took you to PGA
  736. championship at the Palm golf course.  Due to the fact that new
  737. resorts are constantly being opened, bus routes may be changed.
  738. Please confirm the bus route before boarding.  As I get more
  739. information on bus schedules I will add it.  Here is a list of the
  740. bus routes and their stops.  THE STOPS ARE NOT IN THE ORDER THAT

  800.                      **  THE MAGIC KINGDOM  **

  803.      The Magic Kingdom is by far the most magical of all three
  804. theme parks.  It takes up 98 acres but that is small compared to
  805. the amount of joy it creates in each and everyone of its visitors.
  806. The park is divided into seven major "lands" or areas with their
  807. own theme: Main Street U.S.A., Adventureland, Frontierland,
  808. Liberty Square, Mickey's Starland, Fantasyland, and Tomorrowland.
  809. Cast members (name for Disney Employees) in each land are dressed
  810. to match the theme of that land.  The following is a description
  811. of each land the attractions one would find there
  812.  
  813.                          -MAIN STREET USA-
  814.  
  815.      This is where one can do a lot of shopping, not to mention a
  816. little fun and eats.  The street is a recreation of the town Walt
  817. Disney grew up in and the buildings are built with turn of the
  818. century architecture.  There are a few attractions here: The Walt
  819. Disney World Railroad, which I recommend  riding when you are
  820. tired of walking and need a break; an arcade with vintage arcade
  821. games; and the movie "The Walt Disney Story," which tells the
  822. story of the Man behind the Mouse.  Stop and have an ice cream
  823. cone and listen to the rag-piano, or cool off on a horse drawn
  824. trolley.
  825.  
  826.                           -TOMORROWLAND-
  827.  
  828.     Tomorrowland now looks more like "Yesterdayland", as it was
  829. built with a 1950's view of tomorrow.  Despite the fact that it
  830. needs to be updated to today's view of tomorrow, this section of
  831. the park houses some of the most popular attractions.  Lines form
  832. early in the day for Space Mountain, the Grand Prix Raceway, and
  833. the Starjets, and by mid-day are quite long.  Hungry? Pick up a
  834. bite to eat at the "Lunch Pad" and then do a little shopping.  The
  835. facelift for Tommorowland should begin soon with replacement rides
  836. for Carousel of Progress, and Mission to Mars.
  837.  
  838.  
  839.   @ * Space Mountain - A thrilling roller coaster ride in the
  840.                      dark.  This ride is tame, but still not for
  841.                      the weak at heart.  I have ridden it 3-4
  842.                      times and I enjoyed it.  This ride is
  843.                      accompanied by long lines: ride it just prior
  844.                      to park closing, or right after the park
  845.                      opens and don't miss it if you like roller
  846.                      coasters.  When you are riding you don't know
  847.                      what is going to happen next since there is
  848.                      no light except for the occasional meteor or
  849.                      galaxy going by.  If the line is extended
  850.                      outside of the building you might want to
  851.                      wait, as there is plenty of room inside for
  852.                      quite a few people and chances are there will
  853.                      be a long wait.  There are actually two
  854.                      separate rides inside the mountain, one has
  855.                      quick dips while the other contains more high
  856.                      speed turns.  Which is which is something I
  857.                      will try and find out.  Overall any wait is
  858.                      worth the 2 minute and 38 second ride.
  859.     * Carousel of Progress - This attraction, originally debuting
  860.                      at the 1964-65 Worlds Fair in New York, was
  861.                      relocated to Disneyland in CA and then
  862.                      Florida.  It is an entertaining ride with a
  863.                      catchy song (you will be singing it after the
  864.                      ride!) that traces four generations of one
  865.                      family's progress through two centuries.  Go
  866.                      on this ride if you are tired and hot.  As it
  867.                      is a great place to relax and the wait is
  868.                      almost never longer than ten minutes.  This
  869.                      ride contains a lot of AA, and a rotating
  870.                      theater!!  Take note of the "present day"
  871.                      representation, as it is getting a tad
  872.                      outdated.  22 minutes.
  873.     * Dream Flight -This cute ride about the history of flight
  874.                      replaced "If You Had Wings" which ran for
  875.                      almost 15 years.  Very short, but
  876.                      entertaining, usually accompanied by no or
  877.                      short lines.  Large screens overhead simulate
  878.                      landings, take offs etc.  Some AA. The ride
  879.                      includes, scenes from Paris, Tokyo, 2-D cut
  880.                      outs, a "popup" book scene, a trip inside of
  881.                      a jet engine and more.  4.5 minutes.
  882.      Mission to Mars - Outdated "simulator" (if you can call it
  883.                      that) where you "fly" to Mars. The theater
  884.                      has some neat effects (seats moving during
  885.                      launch, etc.) yet it is not very exciting for
  886.                      the older folks (13 years and up).  However,
  887.                      it is a good place to cool off.  Small amount
  888.                      of AA.  Take note of how everything is
  889.                      outdated in this attraction such as the
  890.                      countdown timers and reel to reel recorders.
  891.                      Children will get a kick out of this
  892.                      attraction.  Be sure to give a nod to Mr.
  893.                      Johnson at the "preflight" briefing --he
  894.                      looks just like the father in Carousel of
  895.                      Progress, hmmm... 12 minutes.
  896.     * American Journeys - A 360 degree CircleVision film (the
  897.                      screen surrounds you!) all about America.
  898.                      Enjoyable and good sights of the USA.
  899.                      Included in the film is The Statue of
  900.                      Liberty, the Colorado Rockies, Mystic
  901.                      Connecticut, Dodger Stadium, and a impressive
  902.                      launch of the Space Shuttle Columbia.  Take
  903.                      note that there are NO seats in the theater.
  904.                      21 minutes long.
  905.     @ Grand Prix Raceway - A fun ride if you like don't mind long
  906.                      lines.  You drive a miniature gasoline
  907.                      powered car around a 2,260 foot track at a
  908.                      blazing 7mph!!  Small children under a
  909.                      certain height are not allowed to drive.
  910.                      Approximately 4 minutes long.  A great ride
  911.                      for kids to "drive" a car.
  912.     @ Star Jets - A simple rule for this ride is: Skip it! Not
  913.                      very exciting and there is almost always a
  914.                      1/2 hour or more wait. It is no more than on
  915.                      of those carnival rides with the hydraulic
  916.                      arms that lift the "spaceships" off the
  917.                      ground.  VERY similar to Dumbo the Flying
  918.                      Elephant in Fantasyland.  1.5 minutes.
  919.     * WEDWAY People Mover -  A fun and relaxing ride on
  920.                      electromagnetic powered trains. They ride
  921.                      above Tomorrowland and go into other
  922.                      attractions and shops.  If you have any
  923.                      doubts about riding Space Mountain, ride this
  924.                      first as it will take you into Space Mountain
  925.                      and you will be able to see what it is like.
  926.                      Other sights on this ride include: a look at
  927.                      Dream Flight and some shops; and a view of
  928.                      Walt Disney's model of what EPCOT was
  929.                      supposed to look like.  (When the narrator
  930.                      says "This is what a future city could be
  931.                      like" the train will slow down and on one
  932.                      side will be this model.  (It is inside a
  933.                      dark tunnel)).  10 minutes.
  934.  
  935.  
  936.                           -ADVENTURELAND-
  937.  
  938.         This land has some of the best rides in the Magic Kingdom,
  939. including some shops where you can buy unusual souvenirs (pirate
  940. hats, pirate cap guns, rubber spiders, etc.). The buildings are of
  941. Caribbean and Polynesian style. You also can have your picture
  942. taken as a pirate here or relax and listen to the steel band
  943. music!
  944.  
  945.       The Enchanted Tiki Birds - An interesting but tame
  946.                      attraction in which AA birds serenade the
  947.                      audience with quite a few songs which will
  948.                      leave you smiling. There are a few surprises,
  949.                      such as: are those totem poles real?  I won't
  950.                      say any more... (Don't go in it twice in one
  951.                      trip, you will get bored with it (at least I
  952.                      did!)).  15.5 minutes.
  953.     * Pirates of the Caribbean - Probably the best AA attraction
  954.                      in the Magic Kingdom.  This is a boat ride
  955.                      that takes you along on a pirates' raid on a
  956.                      Caribbean island.  A truly amazing ride that
  957.                      will leave you singing the theme song. There
  958.                      is a small log flume drop in the beginning,
  959.                      but nothing to be scared about.  It is a
  960.                      truly a great ride! Don't miss it!  When you
  961.                      are about to go on this ride, go into the
  962.                      LEFT line. It is ALWAYS shorter. (See Basic
  963.                      Tips section)  7.5 minutes.
  964.   @ * Jungle Cruise - This is a good 10 minute boat ride where you
  965.                      ride through the African jungle along with
  966.                      your witty boat captain.  Encountered along
  967.                      the way are: Elephant bathing areas, hippos,
  968.                      gorillas, snakes, large waterfalls, and more.
  969.                      An enjoyable and entertaining ride, loaded
  970.                      with AA. Kids love this ride! Beware, the
  971.                      waiting lines are longer than they look. Go
  972.                      just before the park closes, or right after
  973.                      it opens.  Oh, and be sure to give a nod to
  974.                      the shrunken head salesman at the end of the
  975.                      ride!  9 minutes.
  976.       Swiss Family Treehouse - This outdoor attraction is a
  977.                      recreation of the treehouse from the Disney
  978.                      movie entitled 'The Swiss Family Robinson'.
  979.                      Climbing stairs is involved here, so those
  980.                      who hate stairs beware.  Despite the stairs,
  981.                      the tree (which is artificial) has many
  982.                      interesting and ingenious inventions that the
  983.                      family 'devised' during their stay.  This
  984.                      does not have handicap access.  Set your own
  985.                      pace, but allow for at least 10 minutes.

  987.                           -FRONTIERLAND-
  988.  
  989.      This land takes a look at the Old West of the USA. Many of
  990. the attractions are fun and enjoyable.  As always shops and places

  993.     * Country Bear Vacation Hoedown - A great show where AA bears
  994.                       sing about their vacation.  The songs have
  995.                       funny lyrics, and the show is altogether
  996.                       fun and entertaining. Don't be discouraged
  997.                       by long lines, they move all at once when
  998.                       the show lets out. Be sure to give a nod to
  999.                       the AA moose, deer and buffalo on your way
  1000.                       out.  15 minutes.
  1001.       Tom Sawyer Island - Here kids can experience a playground
  1002.                       with barrel bridges, Fort Sam Clemens, and
  1003.                       more. Food and restrooms are available on
  1004.                       the island. Adults, relax and get a bite to
  1005.                       eat while the kids play.
  1006.   @ * Splash Mountain - This is the same ride as the one in
  1007.                       Disneyland in CA but it has been redesigned
  1008.                       for a bigger thrill.  It follows the
  1009.                       adventures of Brer Rabbit and his friends
  1010.                       from the Disney movie "Song of the South".
  1011.                       There is a plot to the entire ride, and at
  1012.                       the end you are treated to the 40 degree log
  1013.                       flume drop down Chickapin Hill!!  9 minutes
  1014.                       long.
  1015.     * Walt Disney World Railroad -  Located between Splash
  1016.                       Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad,
  1017.                       this station is yet another place where you
  1018.                       can board the WDW Railroad.  19 minutes
  1019.                       (round trip).
  1020.   @ * Big Thunder Mountain Railroad - This is another great roller
  1021.                       coaster. It's a lot of fun, but again it's
  1022.                       not for the weak at heart. If you are unsure
  1023.                       walk up to the exit of the ride, where you
  1024.                       can see the "runaway" mine trains going
  1025.                       around the track.  Go on this ride during
  1026.                       the parades, fireworks, or at the end or
  1027.                       beginning of the day as it is a very popular
  1028.                       ride. There are terrific sights inside the
  1029.                       "caves" where the train goes. If you are
  1030.                       still shaky about whether or not to go on
  1031.                       it, try the ride at night, when it becomes
  1032.                       much tamer than it is during the day.  Just
  1033.                       a note of warning: The worst drop on the
  1034.                       ride is after the 3rd hill (the hill is the
  1035.                       thing that brings you to the top (real
  1036.                       noisy)), after a sweeping left turn the
  1037.                       train will straighten out, and then all of a
  1038.                       sudden, down you go!!  3.5 minutes.
  1039.  
  1040.                          -LIBERTY SQUARE-
  1041.  
  1042.      This land represents colonial USA.  There are some neat shops
  1043. here along with a 130 year old oak tree. Shops and places to eat
  1044. are also here (You think Disney would create park of the park with
  1045. out food and merchandise stops??).
  1046.  
  1047.       The Hall of Presidents - Not a thrilling attraction, but
  1048.                       informative and educational.  The show takes
  1049.                       place in a theater and it is quite boring
  1050.                       for the most part.  The show starts with a
  1051.                       film describing how important the
  1052.                       Constitution is to Americans.  The good part
  1053.                       of the show is the roll call of all 42
  1054.                       presidents of the United States (Including
  1055.                       Bill Clinton). The AA figures are incredibly
  1056.                       lifelike.  Then Abraham Lincoln stands up
  1057.                       and talks.  Not incredibly thrilling, but a
  1058.                       good place to cool off. Not for kids under
  1059.                       10, as it will bore them to death (unless
  1060.                       they really fully understand what the
  1061.                       Constitution is and what it means to us as
  1062.                       Americans).  22 minutes.
  1063.       Liberty Square Riverboat - This is a neat ride on a
  1064.                       recreated Mississippi Riverboat.  It has
  1065.                       some great scenery including "injuns", a
  1066.                       cabin fire, and more. It's a nice way to
  1067.                       relax on the rivers of America and see
  1068.                       exactly what Mark Twain was writing about.
  1069.                       24 minutes.
  1070.     * Haunted Mansion - This is not as scary as it sounds; in
  1071.                       fact, it is actually quite humorous.  During
  1072.                       your journey through the house you meet up
  1073.                       with 999 happy haunts (and as the ride says
  1074.                       there is always room for one more!).  The
  1075.                       lines are usually short and it is worthwhile
  1076.                       to ride it.  Contains AA.  Lots of fun!
  1077.                       Small children might be scared however. And
  1078.                       also: Is the ceiling going up, or is the
  1079.                       floor going down??  (You'll see what I
  1080.                       mean...)  8.5 minutes.
  1081.  
  1082.                        -MICKEY'S STARLAND-
  1083.  
  1084.      This used to be Mickey's Birthdayland, but it was changed
  1085. when Mickey's 60th birthday party was over.  It is now called
  1086. Mickey's Starland but overall it is still geared toward very young
  1087. kids as it was before.
  1088.  
  1089.       Petting Zoo - Pet the farm animals. See Minnie Moo, the cow
  1090.                     with the Mickey Mouse ears on its side.
  1091.       Mickey's house - Take a look at this (it's pretty cute).
  1092.                   + Other Items, such as meet the characters from
  1093.                     The Disney afternoon etc. (In the back.)
  1094.       Duckburg U.S.A. - A recreation of Uncle Scrooge's town.
  1095.     * Walt Disney World Railroad - Yet another place to grab the
  1096.                       train.

  1098.                            -FANTASYLAND-
  1099.  
  1100.      This is where you will find most of the smaller kids and
  1101. their parents on the rides.  Most of the rides here are simple and
  1102. short, yet interesting and fun.  Shops and places to eat are also
  1103. here (There are a lot of places to eat and buy things,  have you
  1104. noticed that?).
  1105.  
  1106.     * Magic Journeys - A 20 minute film with INCREDIBLE 3-
  1107.                       dimensional effects. The objects come right
  1108.                       out of the screen and in front of your
  1109.                       face!!!  Don't miss it.  It does not have
  1110.                       long lines and you get to see a 3-D Donald
  1111.                       Duck cartoon before the actual film The only
  1112.                       Disney cartoon ever made in 3-D: Working for
  1113.                       Peanuts. The actual "feature film" for the
  1114.                       attraction has a somewhat corny storyline
  1115.                       but overall it is worth it to sit down and
  1116.                       enjoy the effects... Oh yeah, it's also
  1117.                       Air-Conditioned!!!  24 minutes.
  1118.       Skyway to Tomorrowland - This is your typical skyway cable
  1119.                       ride. If you don't feel like walking to
  1120.                       Tomorrowland then take this.  The lines are
  1121.                       usually much shorter at Tomorrowland.  By
  1122.                       taking this ride you get so see some of the
  1123.                       not so impressive sights of WDW, such as the
  1124.                       rooftops and the building that houses 20,000
  1125.                       Leagues Under the Sea.  This attraction
  1126.                       closes when the wind starts blowing hard, or
  1127.                       when a Florida storm is brewing.  5 minutes.
  1128.     * It's a Small World - Don't miss it!! A very cute and
  1129.                       entertaining boat ride where AA dolls from
  1130.                       all over the world sing a song that you will
  1131.                       never forget. In fact, you'll probably be
  1132.                       singing it for weeks!  Includes AA.  A
  1133.                       relaxing and cooling ride. This ride came
  1134.                       from the 1964-65 World's Fair in New York.
  1135.                       10.5 minutes.
  1136.       Snow White's Scary Adventures - Don't be misled my the name
  1137.                       of the ride as it's a cute ride, nothing
  1138.                       spectacular yet it's not that scary at all.
  1139.                       Its more and less like Mr. Toad's Wild Ride
  1140.                       but with a Snow White theme.  The witch
  1141.                       keeps popping out at you and trying to
  1142.                       "scare" you and make you eat that famous
  1143.                       apple.  At the end you get "hit" on the head
  1144.                       by a large diamond and the effects are done
  1145.                       quite well.  2.5 minutes.
  1146.       Mr. Toad's Wild Ride - Actually it's not that wild as it is
  1147.                       geared for kids. Throughout the rides it
  1148.                       always looks like you are going to crash
  1149.                       into something, but that's part of the fun.
  1150.                       After taking a wrong turn, you seem to be in
  1151.                       a tunnel with a train coming right at you,
  1152.                       or heading for some crates full of TNT!
  1153.                       Small children will enjoy this attraction
  1154.                       and most of them exit laughing!
  1155.                       2 minutes.
  1156.       Peter Pan's Flight - A cute ride about Peter Pan, where you
  1157.                       "fly" in Hook's boat (via overhead tracks)
  1158.                       looking down on London (very well done),
  1159.                       Captain Hook and other scenes from the
  1160.                       movie. Many people enjoy this ride as it is
  1161.                       quite tame.  Includes AA.  3 minutes.
  1162.   @ * 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea - A submarine ride based on the
  1163.                       movie where you will "descend" 20,000
  1164.                       leagues under the sea (actually you never go
  1165.                       under, yet the bubbles make for a convincing
  1166.                       sight) to find sharks, the lost city of
  1167.                       Atlantis, sea serpents, mermaids, and more
  1168.                       (all artificial).  The effects on this ride
  1169.                       are not that incredible, but it is one of
  1170.                       the most popular so WATCH OUT, the lines for
  1171.                       this ride are LONG!!  Take note: if you look
  1172.                       carefully you'll be able to see the thin
  1173.                       cables suspending some of the fish. 8.5
  1174.                       minutes.
  1175.     * Cinderella's Castle - Not really an attraction per se, but
  1176.                       it's a great background for pictures. Inside
  1177.                       there is a 6-7 panel tile mosaic with gold
  1178.                       inlay that depicts the story of Cinderella.
  1179.                       It also houses the restaurant King Stephens
  1180.                       Banquet Hall. More inspiring than the castle
  1181.                       in Disneyland, this castle has something
  1182.                       magical about it when you look at it, and
  1183.                       the architecture is astonishing...
  1184.       Mad Tea Party - Spin yourself dizzy in those famous teacups
  1185.                       from Alice in Wonderland. You don't have to
  1186.                       go fast if you don't want to.  This ride is
  1187.                       nothing exciting, but if you want to go on
  1188.                       it you must fight with crowds, as it is
  1189.                       surprisingly popular.  1.5 minutes.
  1190.       Golden Carousel - Your typical theme park carousel, yet this
  1191.                       one has something magical about it.
  1192.                       Originally from Olympic Park in New Jersey,
  1193.                       it was restored to an incredibly dazzling
  1194.                       condition by WDW workers. Take note that
  1195.                       everyone gets to ride a white horse on this
  1196.                       carousel.  2 minutes.
  1197.       Dumbo, the Flying Elephant - Just like the StarJets in
  1198.                       Tomorowland (including the long lines). This
  1199.                       is extremely popular with the younger kids
  1200.                       (as the StarJets are popular with the older
  1201.                       kids). This ride is going to be renovated in
  1202.                       the near future. The renovation will not
  1203.                       only improve the look of the ride but it
  1204.                       will increase it's passenger/hour ratio.
  1205.                       (They are increasing the # of Dumbo's from
  1206.                       10 to 16).  The same ride in Disneyland has
  1207.                       recently gone under the same renovation
  1208.                       process.  1.5 minutes.

  1212.                  EXTRA SHOWS IN THE MAGIC KINGDOM

  1214.     Check the information centers for EXACT times. After you see
  1215. the shows once, take advantage of the crowds not trying to get on
  1216. the rides.  Most of the waiting times for most rides are cut more
  1217. than 80% during parades and fireworks.
  1218.  
  1219.  
  1220. Daily Parade - Usually around 3pm. See it once and then take
  1221.              advantage of it on your next visit to the park. The
  1222.              20th anniversary parade has huge cold air balloons of
  1223.              famous Disney characters and more.
  1224. SPECTRO-MAGIC - This new show replaces the old Main Street
  1225.              Electrical Parade which is being sent to Euro-
  1226.              Disneyland. This parade uses fiber-optic, prismatic
  1227.              holographics, and electro-luminescent technologies.
  1228.              Clouds of underlit liquid nitrogen accompany the good
  1229.              old twinkle lights. Truly an incredible parade with
  1230.              great music and super effects.  DON'T MISS IT. (The
  1231.              parade might not be running during the 'off' season.
  1232.              Check information centers for info.)
  1233. Fireworks - 10pm. Don't worry about this, as you can see it from
  1234.              almost anywhere in the park. The Grand Floridian
  1235.              resort, The Polynesian Resort, and the Contemporary
  1236.              Resort are all good places to watch the fireworks.
  1237.              Personally I enjoy the Polynesian, grab a chair on
  1238.              the beach and look straight across the lagoon. There
  1239.              are only fireworks when the Magic Kingdom is open
  1240.              after 10pm.

  1249.     EPCOT (Experimental Prototype Community Of Tomorrow) Center is
  1250. divided into two major areas: Future World and World Showcase.  In
  1251. each of the two areas are pavilions about certain topics and
  1252. countries.  NOTE: Most of the rides in EPCOT Center use a
  1253. continuous train, so people are always boarding the ride and the
  1254. lines move rather quickly.  The majority of the rides in Future
  1255. World can be ridden during midday with average waiting times,
  1256. however if you don't want to wait, go on the rides at night during
  1257. Illuminations (the Laser Light show), or stay until the park
  1258. closes; the lines get extremely short about 2 hours before
  1259. closing.
  1260.  
  1261.                           -FUTURE WORLD-
  1262.  
  1263. Future world has 8 main pavilions, each with its own theme. Some
  1264. pavilions have attractions within them.
  1265.  
  1266.      * Spaceship Earth - This ride (which is actually inside the
  1267.                       big silver sphere!!) traces the history of
  1268.                       communication and is one of the best rides
  1269.                       in EPCOT.  DON'T MISS IT!! TONS OF AA!!  See
  1270.                       all sorts of sights such as the Sistine
  1271.                       ceiling, Rome after it fell, King Tut, the
  1272.                       telegraph, television, today's technology
  1273.                       and the technology of Tomorrow's Child.  The
  1274.                       climax is when you reach the top of the geo-
  1275.                       sphere and encounter a breathtaking view of
  1276.                       the stars.  This is by far one of the most
  1277.                       incredible planetariums I have seen. Then
  1278.                       you descend and listen to the song
  1279.                       Tomorrow's Child. Narrated by Walter
  1280.                       Cronkite. DON'T MISS THIS RIDE!! Presented
  1281.                       by AT&T. 16 minutes.
  1282.      * The Living Seas - This attraction is a walk through as well
  1283.                       as a ride.  First there is a brief preview,
  1284.                       then you see a very informative (but loud)
  1285.                       movie about the oceans.  After that you
  1286.                       descend in a "Hydrolator" to Sea Base Alpha
  1287.                       and ride through part of the coral reef
  1288.                       environment. Next you are free to walk
  1289.                       around Sea Base Alpha and try on a diving
  1290.                       suit, see the manatees, learn about all
  1291.                       sorts of marine life, and more.  It's a lot
  1292.                       of fun.  Much can be learned here about the
  1293.                       undersea world.  Oh don't forget to Ascend
  1294.                       in your "Hydrolator", or then again, just
  1295.                       use the door next to them... Presented by
  1296.                       United Technologies.  Three minute ride,
  1297.                       after that you set your own pace.
  1298.      * The Land - This pavilion actually has 3 attractions in it
  1299.                       along with a revolving restaurant and a food
  1300.                       court. Presented by Nestle (formally Kraft).
  1301.                    * Listen to the Land - This is a boat ride
  1302.                        through the gardens, ecosystems, and future
  1303.                        agriculture that EPCOT houses.  See lettuce
  1304.                        growing in styrofoam, plants hanging in
  1305.                        midair, bananas growing next to rice right
  1306.                        next to cacao.  Most of the food grown here
  1307.                        is served in WDW restaurants.  Some AA
  1308.                        Excellent. 12 minutes.
  1309.                    * Kitchen Kabaret - This theater show explains
  1310.                        the 4 basic food groups in a comical way.
  1311.                        Bread, Ham, Eggs, Milk and others sing to
  1312.                        you about health with your AA host Bonnie
  1313.                        Appetite.  A lot of AA. 13 minutes.
  1314.                      Symbiosis - A 19 minute film about
  1315.                        agriculture and farming.  Not my favorite,
  1316.                        yet informative.  18.5 minutes.
  1317.                 Also in this pavilion are two places to eat: a
  1318.                        rotating sit-down restaurant and a
  1319.                        marketplace type food court.
  1320.    * Journey Into Imagination - 3 attractions. Presented by Kodak.
  1321.                     * Journey Into Imagination Ride - A ride about
  1322.                        your imagination and where it can take you.
  1323.                        There are some really interesting things to
  1324.                        see in this attraction including: lasers,
  1325.                        fiber optics and a surprise: when you see a
  1326.                        white light flashing ahead in the ride,
  1327.                        smile!!  Your picture will be taken and
  1328.                        shown at the end of the ride.  Ride with
  1329.                        Dreamfinder and his helper Figment (a
  1330.                        purple childish dragon) through the world
  1331.                        of imagination.  13 minutes.
  1332.                     * The Image Works - A futuristic playground
  1333.                        where you can conduct an orchestra, star in
  1334.                        a movie, play with sounds, lasers,
  1335.                        pinboards, sound effects, bubbles, a neon
  1336.                        tunnel and more.  Very imaginative and
  1337.                        loads of fun for all ages! (Even my
  1338.                        grandfather was "playing"!!)
  1339.                   *** Captain EO - Another 3-D movie that is
  1340.                        absolutely incredible!!! DON'T MISS IT!!!
  1341.                        Lasers shoot throughout the theater along
  1342.                        with flashing lights that make the entire
  1343.                        movie more exciting.  AN INCREDIBLE movie.
  1344.                        (18 minutes) There is a pre-show about
  1345.                        taking pictures, which is good. The movie
  1346.                        stars Michael Jackson.  And he and his
  1347.                        puppet friends must turn an ugly empress
  1348.                        into a beautiful princess through music,
  1349.                        lights, and 3-D! 17 minutes.
  1350.      * World of Motion - 2 excellent attractions are found here.
  1351.                        Presented by General Motors
  1352.                    * World of Motion Ride - This shows man's
  1353.                        progress in his quest for better means of
  1354.                        transportation.  A lot of AA make this ride
  1355.                        exceptional.  Don't miss it, it's worth any
  1356.                        wait. See the wheel being invented, a train
  1357.                        being held up, a "small" automobile
  1358.                        accident, planes from the Golden Age of
  1359.                        aviation, and the future of transportation.
  1360.                        14.5 minutes.
  1361.                      Transcenter - Here you can see the cars and
  1362.                        transportation of the future. Actual
  1363.                        working prototype cars are on display here,
  1364.                        along with the Geo Tracker Boom Box Truck.
  1365.                        You can also look at and sit in the newest
  1366.                        GM models.
  1367.       * Horizons - This ride looks at 3 aspects of the future:
  1368.                       Desert, Space and Sea.  This attraction has
  1369.                       lots of AA and is one not to be missed!  At
  1370.                       the end of the ride you can choose which way
  1371.                       you want it to end.  There are also two
  1372.                       three story movie screens which make you
  1373.                       feel like you are flying. See the future of
  1374.                       desert farming, undersea habitation, and
  1375.                       space colonization. Don't miss it!!
  1376.                       Presented by General Electric.  15 minutes.
  1377.      * Wonders of Life - 3 Main Attractions.  Presented by
  1378.                       Metropolitan Life.
  1379.                    * Body Wars - A flight simulator ride through
  1380.                        the human body. Here you are "shrunk" down
  1381.                        really small and you are injected into the
  1382.                        human body. When an emergency occurs
  1383.                        however, your tour becomes more than just
  1384.                        for sightseeing. The entire 40 seat theater
  1385.                        bucks and pivots to the movie. Very good
  1386.                        but too short.  *NOT for the weak at heart
  1387.                        or those prone to motion sickness*
  1388.                        6 minutes.
  1389.                    * Cranium Command - A very imaginative
  1390.                        attraction where you look through the head
  1391.                        of a 12 year old boy and see his thought
  1392.                        processes.  Includes such stars as Bobcat
  1393.                        Goldwaith, Hans & Frans from SNL, and a
  1394.                        cute story line. Try not to miss it, as it
  1395.                        is worth a few laughs and it is presented
  1396.                        extremely well.  Includes AA.  13 minutes.
  1397.                      The Making of Me - Dramatic micro-photogrophy
  1398.                        explains the reproduction cycle from
  1399.                        fertilization to birth.  This attraction
  1400.                        had the longest wait in all of Disney
  1401.                        World. Some people may not want their
  1402.                        children to see such material.  A sign
  1403.                        explains what this attraction is about.  It
  1404.                        is up to your discretion to see it or not.
  1405.                 Surrounding the attractions are many other "mini"
  1406.                        attractions such as: Sports Goofy, a Sports
  1407.                        analyzer, a health bar and more.
  1408.      * Universe of Energy - This ride, which is interesting to
  1409.                        those who want to learn, is about energy.
  1410.                        It has one great part where you travel back
  1411.                        millions of years to the time of the
  1412.                        dinosaurs and see them (They are AA). Very
  1413.                        informative look at the diminishing supply
  1414.                        of energy on the planet earth.  The entire
  1415.                        theater in this attraction actually moves!!
  1416.                        The solar cells on the roof of the building
  1417.                        provide the power.  Presented by Exxon.
  1418.                        NOTE: Due to the recent 'Dinosaur revival'
  1419.                        (From the release of Jurassic Park) this
  1420.                        attraction may become more crowded in 1993
  1421.                        as kids want to see dinosaurs. Plan
  1422.                        accordingly.  26.5 minutes.
  1423.        SPACE PAVILION - PLANS COMPLETE, NO WORD YET ON WHEN
  1424.                        CONSTRUCTION WILL BEGIN.

  1426. There are 2 other small pavilions in EPCOT Center:

  1428.        Communicore East and West - These smaller pavilions have
  1429.                        computers and other electronic gadgets to
  1430.                        play with, as well as places to eat and
  1431.                        shop.  Communicore East also hosts
  1432.                        Backstage Magic.  This is a look at the
  1433.                        computers that run EPCOT Center.
  1434.  
  1435.  
  1436.                          -WORLD SHOWCASE-
  1437.  
  1438.      World Showcase depicts 11 countries from around the world.
  1439. Some of them have attractions; others do not. They all have
  1440. restaurants where you can sample authentic food from that country.
  1441. The people who work in these pavilions are from the countries that
  1442. they represent.  Each pavilion has shops where you can buy
  1443. authentic merchandise from that country.  The countries are listed
  1444. in a counter clockwise direction around the EPCOT Lagoon (Except
  1445. for Russia).
  1446.  
  1447.        Canada - This country is depicted by a 360 degree Circle
  1448.                 Vision film, two shops and a cafeteria style
  1449.                 restaurant called Le Cellier.  The movie, named
  1450.                 O' Canada, displays the life of the people in
  1451.                 Canada.  Some of the most impressive sights are in
  1452.                 this film; skiing down slopes, the Cathedral of
  1453.                 Notre Dame, ice hockey, and part of the Canadian
  1454.                 air force, all in 360 degrees!  The castle like
  1455.                 building in this pavilion was styled after Chateau
  1456.                 Laurier in Ottawa. The two shops offer authentic
  1457.                 French-Canadian gifts and souvenirs.  In the shop
  1458.                 called the Trading Post there are some audio
  1459.                 animatronic animals that occasionally move and may
  1460.                 even speak a bit. See ya en Canada, eh?  (Duration
  1461.                 of film: 18 minutes).
  1462.      * United Kingdom - This pavilion recreates an English town;
  1463.                 complete with a tea shop and a pub.  The Rose and
  1464.                 Crown Pub offers traditional English cooking, I
  1465.                 recommend the seafood medley (broiled scallops,
  1466.                 shrimp and muscles) as an appetizer and the Fish
  1467.                 N' Chips with malt vinegar for the main course.
  1468.                 The lamb chops are also very good.  The Pub also
  1469.                 offers many other dishes, dark beer, and ale. The
  1470.                 shops include The Toy Soldier (toy shop), tea
  1471.                 shop, and...   A few times a day the English
  1472.                 Players present a hilarious street play based in
  1473.                 Shakespeare's time.  This play would not be
  1474.                 complete with out the help from the audience
  1475.                 though!  Have a jolly good time old chap!!
  1476.        France - A miniature Eiffel Tower sets the mood for France.
  1477.                A few restaurants offer up the traditional French

  1479.                off go inside and see the movie.  A very elegant
  1480.                theater (complete with a crystal chandelier and
  1481.                velvet curtins) depicts France on a 180 degree
  1482.                screen.  The film is very well done.  Other shops
  1483.                are here where you can purchase all sorts of French
  1484.                merchandise.  Bon Appetite!
  1485.                (Duration of film: 18 minutes).
  1486.        Morocco - The prayer tower Koutoubia Minaret dominates this
  1487.                country's representation. In the front of the
  1488.                pavilion an impressive irrigation system waters the
  1489.                flowers, be sure to take a look at it.  In the
  1490.                Gallery of Arts and History one can view exhibits
  1491.                on Moroccan culture.  Hungry?  If so stop off at
  1492.                Marrakesh where you can have an authentic Moroccan
  1493.                meal.  Many shops at this pavilion offer up a wide
  1494.                variety of merchandise including: carpets, jewelry,
  1495.                clothing, bamboo furniture and off course a fez.
  1496.        Japan - Excellent food, shops and entertainment can be
  1497.                found in the Japan pavilion.  If you are in the
  1498.                courtyard area of the pavilion, keep your eye out
  1499.                for the man who sculpts candy.  I am not kidding
  1500.                either, it's pretty neat.  A performing drum troupe
  1501.                can also be found in the courtyard.  The Japanese
  1502.                gardens are authentically reproduced and I highly
  1503.                recommend a walk through them.  The restaurants and
  1504.                snack bars serve up traditional Japanese cuisine.
  1505.                In one restaurant the chef cooks on your table and
  1506.                puts on a small comical routine.  Towards the back
  1507.                of the pavilion you will notice the gates to the
  1508.                Emperor's palace.  These will be used as an
  1509.                entrance to the new roller coaster ride that is
  1510.                still in the planning stages.  (See the 'In the
  1511.                Future' section for more information on this
  1512.                topic).  Soyonara!
  1513.      * U.S.A. - Here you can get the traditional hot dog and soda.
  1514.                But eating is not the only thing to do here.  The
  1515.                attraction, called The American Adventure, is one
  1516.                of the most impressive in World Showcase.  This 29
  1517.                minute presentation shows the most important parts
  1518.                in the history of the United States.  Moments
  1519.                recreated include: the Pilgrims, Valley Forge, The
  1520.                Philadelphia Centennial Exposition, World War II,
  1521.                and more.  Overall the show is the most emotional
  1522.                of all the attractions in WDW, the final scene will
  1523.                choke up even the hardest hearts, and everyone
  1524.                leaves the theater with a feeling of American
  1525.                pride.  Also, not one of the people on stage are
  1526.                real!!!  They are all AA.  Please don't miss this
  1527.                one.  See ya later!  Presented by The Coca-Cola
  1528.                Company.  (Duration of attraction: 29 minutes).
  1529.        Italy - The reproduction of Venice's Doge's Palace marks
  1530.                 this pavilion.  Here in an open air market all
  1531.                 sorts of goodies can be found ranging from Italian
  1532.                 chocolates and leather goods, to lead crystal
  1533.                 bowels and earrings.  The restaurant here,
  1534.                 L'Originale Alfredo di Roma Ristorante, serves up
  1535.                 an incredible meal.  All pasta is made on the
  1536.                 premise and is bound to satisfy any Italian
  1537.                 appetite.  If your not hungry look through the
  1538.                 windows and watch the chefs make the pasta.  In
  1539.                 the mood for a little comedy?  Hang around the
  1540.                 street for a bit and soon enough "Il Teatro de
  1541.                 Bologna" (translation: Bologna Theater) will come
  1542.                 out and entertain you with they're comical plays.
  1543.                 Beware, you may become part of the play!
  1544.        Germany - Bloatworst, Beer and a Teddy Bear is what you
  1545.                 will find here.  The food is quite authentic and
  1546.                 you will leave the restaurant feeling a bit
  1547.                 stuffed.  There are some excellent shops including
  1548.                 (my favorite) Der Teddy Bear.  This is a toy shop
  1549.                 that sells (you guessed it) Teddy Bears,
  1550.                 Playmobile, LGB Model Trains and more.  Threre is
  1551.                 also a cart out front the pavillion that sells
  1552.                 German lead crystal items, some of whice are
  1553.                 beautiful.
  1554.        China - Go back to the days of the Ming Dynasty when you
  1555.                 visit Disney's recreation of China.  Beautiful
  1556.                 architecture is found throughout the entire
  1557.                 pavilion. There is an excellent 360 degree circle
  1558.                 vision film which gives a great overview of the
  1559.                 country.  The food here is exceptional and they
  1560.                 have the best egg rolls I have ever had. (Duration
  1561.                 of film: 19 minutes).
  1562.    @ * Norway - DON'T MISS the ride Maelstrom at this pavilion!!
  1563.                 It is a ride in a Viking boat through the
  1564.                 Norwegian seas.  With a few surprises!! -But very
  1565.                 short.  The ride does move you backwards for a
  1566.                 bit, and makes it look as if you are going to go
  1567.                 over a cliff. Some folks might find this
  1568.                 unnerving.  Excellent cafeteria style and sit down
  1569.                 food is available here along with shops selling
  1570.                 miscellaneous items and a travel center (If you
  1571.                 plan to visit).  If the line for Maelstrom is
  1572.                 outside the building you may want to wait.  Disney
  1573.                 imagineers have come up with an incredible way of
  1574.                 herding people into an attraction and at times it
  1575.                 can be quite deceiving!  (Duration of ride: 14
  1576.                 minutes (5 minute ride & 9 minute movie).
  1577.      * Mexico - Almost the entire pavilion is enclosed in a large
  1578.                 reproduction of a Mexican pyramid.  This means
  1579.                 that it is all air-conditioned!!  Inside it is set
  1580.                 up as a Mexican market at night.  The ride called
  1581.                 "El Rio del Tiempo" (Translated means: The River
  1582.                 of Time) is here.  This boat ride takes you
  1583.                 through Mexico's past and present.  Although the
  1584.                 ride is depicted mainly by grainy rear-projection
  1585.                 movies and parts of it get quite corny, this is an
  1586.                 enjoyable and pleasant ride.  The end has some of
  1587.                 the best "imitation" firework effects I have ever
  1588.                 seen.  Mexican food is served on the bank of this
  1589.                 "river".  Many authentic Mexican gifts can be
  1590.                 purchased here, ranging from sombreros to ponchos.
  1591.                 In the entrance to the pavilion there is an
  1592.                 ongoing display of Mexican art depicting the
  1593.                 history of the country.  (Duration of ride: 8.5
  1594.                 minutes).

  1603. Try to see all of the rides marked with an asterisk (*).  Any
  1604. rides that you miss during the day, go back and see during
  1605. Illuminations.

  1607. Extra Shows in EPCOT Center - Check the information centers for
  1608.  the time that the show starts.  After you see the shows once,
  1609.  take advantage of the crowds not trying to get on the rides. As
  1610.  in the Magic Kingdom most of the waiting times for most rides are
  1611.  cut more than 70% during parades and fireworks.
  1612.  
  1613.  Illuminations - An incredible laser & fireworks show over the
  1614.      lagoon in EPCOT center. Don't miss it.  But warning, crowds
  1615.      start lining up around the lagoon as early as 2 hours before
  1616.      the show starts!! The ultimate firework/laser show!!!
  1617.  Surprise in the Skies - A special daytime fireworks show along
  1618.      with kites, ultralights to celebrate WDW's 20th Anniversary.
  1619.      For the show's finale, cold-air balloons of famous Disney
  1620.      characters, representing all EPCOT countries, are blown up
  1621.      all around the lagoon.  This show may have changed, but there
  1622.      is usually some sort of midday show.
  1623.  
  1624. There also may be some other shows on the lagoon in EPCOT center
  1625.  during midday, again check with information centers for times.
  1626.

  1628. PART VII
  1629.                **  DISNEY MGM STUDIOS THEME PARK  **
  1630.                   -------------------------------
  1631.  
  1632.   At this park you can see actual films being made, so the
  1633. brochure says.  Actually there is a minimal amount of shooting
  1634. going on, but the park will give you an excellent idea of how
  1635. movies are made.  There are only a few attractions, but an entire
  1636. day can easily be spent here.  This park is much smaller than the
  1637. other two, so it doesn't take many people to make it crowded and
  1638. often they limit the amount of people inside the gates.  The lines
  1639. are bearable in the early morning hours (7-10am) and after 5pm.
  1640. Despite its small size the studios will make you walk.  Be
  1641. prepared to be on your feet for most of the day.  Not just for
  1642. waiting, but some tours last an hour and you are on your feet for
  1643. the whole time.
  1644.  
  1645.   @ * The Great Movie Ride - This ride contains some of the most
  1646.                     sophisticated AA figures ever created and some
  1647.                     of Hollywood's greatest films are featured
  1648.                     here.  It is a great attraction but the lines
  1649.                     can get quite long during midday.  Movies
  1650.                     featured are Singing in the Rain, Casablanca,
  1651.                     Raiders of the Lost Ark, Alien, and The Wizard
  1652.                     of Oz, just to name a few. The show features
  1653.                     excellent special effects, some of the best AA
  1654.                     figures ever created, and an excellent but
  1655.                     short film at the end that gives tribute to
  1656.                     academy award winning movies. 19 minutes.
  1657.   @ * Backstage Studio Tour - This is a tram ride through the
  1658.                     back lot of the studio. It features
  1659.                     Catastrophe Canyon:  a simulated rainstorm,
  1660.                     earthquake, flash flood, and explosions all
  1661.                     rolled into one.  Other aspects of the tour
  1662.                     include wardrobe, lighting, set design,
  1663.                     and camera departments etc.  Many props from
  1664.                     movies can also be seen here, some include:
  1665.                     Snow Speeder from The Empire Strikes Back, the
  1666.                     pod from Flight of the Navigator, and the
  1667.                     Bulldog Cafe from The Rocketeer.  The tram
  1668.                     also takes you down what is called the
  1669.                     "residential" street.  The facades of these
  1670.                     'houses' are used for outside shots in movies
  1671.                     and tv shows.  One house you may recognize is
  1672.                     from the Golden Girls television series.
  1673.                     After the tram ride your are dropped off by
  1674.                     the New York street.  Here you are free to
  1675.                     walk through the "city".  Approx. 40 minutes.
  1676.   @ * Inside Magic: Special Effects and Production Tour - This
  1677.                     tour, which lasts approximately 1 hour, shows
  1678.                     how miniatures, blue mats, and other special
  1679.                     effects are done in movies, as well as
  1680.                     editing, audio recording, and final
  1681.                     production.  The highlight of the tour is
  1682.                     where you are allowed to look at the three
  1683.                     soundstages.  Here you may see absolutely
  1684.                     nothing, or you may actually see a set from a
  1685.                     tv show.  I have seen the sets for: Delta
  1686.                     commercials, The New Mickey Mouse Club, and
  1687.                     Wheel of Fortune.  You never know what is in
  1688.                     there!  At the end of the tour a preview of
  1689.                     new Disney/Touchstone movies is shown.
  1690.                     Approximately 1 hour.
  1691.   @ * SuperStar Television - This is a great production where the
  1692.                     audience actually takes part in a television
  1693.                     broadcast. The audience can star on the
  1694.                     Tonight Show (with Johnny Carson), Late Night
  1695.                     with David Letterman, Cheers, I Love Lucy, NBC
  1696.                     News, and even hit a home run for the New York
  1697.                     Mets. (They were my favorite team...until this
  1698.                     year...go Red Sox!) Don't miss this one, it is
  1699.                     hilarious and I guarantee it will leave you
  1700.                     (at the very least) smiling. If you would like
  1701.                     to take part in the production get to the
  1702.                     front of the crowd in the pre-show area, this
  1703.                     is were they pick out the people to use in the
  1704.                     "production".  RAISE YOUR HAND and you will
  1705.                     have an excellent chance of being picked.  If
  1706.                     you do not want to take part on stage, stay
  1707.                     outside of the pre-show area and lay low!  30
  1708.                     minutes.
  1709.     * Animation Building - Here you can take a tour and see how
  1710.                     cartoons and full length animated features are
  1711.                     created by Disney animators.  See actual
  1712.                     animation cells from Disney classics, and
  1713.                     watch Disney artists work on current animation
  1714.                     projects. If you are interested in art, I
  1715.                     recommend taking this tour as it is very
  1716.                     informative and interesting.  The lines for
  1717.                     this attraction are usually shorter than
  1718.                     others.  Walter Cronkite and Robin Williams
  1719.                     are your "Video Hosts" through the tour.  The
  1720.                     two of them together present animation to you
  1721.                     in a amusing way.
  1722.     * Monster Sound Show - Here you can learn how sound effects
  1723.                     are added to a movie and how they can add
  1724.                     suspense and excitement to a film.  Of course
  1725.                     this is done with the help of a few volunteers
  1726.                     (should we call them volunteers?) from the
  1727.                     audience.  The sound effects are produced on
  1728.                     the famous Foley stage, named after its
  1729.                     creator. The outcome is quite humorous due to
  1730.                     the fact that the volunteers are untrained
  1731.                     tourists!  The short movie stars Martin Short
  1732.                     and Chevy Chase.  The pre-show tv screens
  1733.                     above the crowd show David Letterman
  1734.                     interviewing Mr. Foley in a hilarious way.
  1735.                     There is a post-show entertainment area for
  1736.                     this attraction.  Outside the theater you can
  1737.                     get a chance to make some of your own sound
  1738.                     effects using the same techniques that were
  1739.                     illustrated in the show.  Beware however, this
  1740.                     area is usually very crowed!
  1741.                     20 minutes.
  1742. @ *** Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular - All I can say is
  1743.                     DON'T Miss it. This show demonstrates how
  1744.                     stunts are part of movies by doing all kinds
  1745.                     of different skits in the Indian Jones
  1746.                     tradition.  The famous plane scene from
  1747.                     "Raiders of the Lost Ark" is reenacted along
  1748.                     with some other scenes from the movie.  There
  1749.                     are only a few shows a day, so get the times
  1750.                     and decide when to see it. If you see a crowd
  1751.                     forming, get in the line --chances are they
  1752.                     know the starting time and they are getting a
  1753.                     head start. If you can, sit near the middle
  1754.                     top for the best view.  After dusk the show is
  1755.                     sometimes shortened: go during midday to see
  1756.                     the entire show.  Almost any seat in the
  1757.                     outdoor theater provides an excellent view of
  1758.                     the action. For the best view, sit towards the
  1759.                     top and the center.  This way you don't have
  1760.                     to fight crowds when it is over, and you still
  1761.                     have a good view. (Warning, this show is
  1762.                     somewhat violent and very loud.  Some small
  1763.                     children may be frightened, (Although my
  1764.                     little sisters enjoyed it!) use your own
  1765.                     discretion.) 30 minutes.
  1766.  @ ** Star Tours - This is a flight simulator ride through rebel
  1767.                     and imperial forces based on the movie Star
  1768.                     Wars.  You are supposed to be going to the
  1769.                     planet Endor, but your "pilot" (An AA robot)
  1770.                     does not really know how to fly this ship. It
  1771.                     is his first flight and you are in for a bumpy
  1772.                     ride after you some how get off course and
  1773.                     eventually wind up at the Death Star!  The
  1774.                     entire 40 seat theater bucks and moves in time
  1775.                     to the movie, creating a very good effect. You
  1776.                     must be a certain height to ride this
  1777.                     attraction.  Expectant Mothers, and those with
  1778.                     back and heart problems are advised not to
  1779.                     participate.  7 minutes.
  1780.  @ ** Muppets 3-D Movie - Probably the best 3-D movie of all time.
  1781.                     Incredible 3-D effects follow the humor of the
  1782.                     crazy and lovable Muppets created by the late
  1783.                     Jim Henson.  Those two cranky critics (AA)
  1784.                     start the show, and then the penguin orchestra
  1785.                     (AA) strikes up a tune.  The effects in this
  1786.                     movie are almost 4-D: When Fozzy Bear squirts
  1787.                     water at the audience you feel it, and bubbles
  1788.                     come out of the ceiling when Miss Piggy sings
  1789.                     "Dream a Little Dream."  You know your in
  1790.                     trouble when the Sweedish Chef is the
  1791.                     projectionist!!  The end is a real "BANG" when
  1792.                     Sam the Eagle presents his "Salute to all
  1793.                     Nations, but mostly America". (You'll see what
  1794.                     I mean!).  This attraction also contains a few
  1795.                     live actors.  Be sure not to miss the pre-show
  1796.                     entertainment as it includes all your favorite
  1797.                     muppet characters including: Kermit, Gonzo,
  1798.                     Beaker, Prof. Bunsen Honeydew and more!
  1799.     * The Honey I Shrunk the Kids Move Set Adventure - Here you
  1800.                     can experience what it would be like to be
  1801.                     shrunk down to a quarter of an inch in size.
  1802.                     Truly a very imaginative playground.  Included
  1803.                     is the Kodak film slide, giant Legos, a HUGE
  1804.                     Oreo cookie, a massive dog nose, a dripping
  1805.                     garden hose and much more.  "BIG" Fun for all
  1806.                     ages.  Try to see it, kids will LOVE it! Set
  1807.                     your own pace but a minimum of 30 minutes is
  1808.                     required, and maybe more with children.
  1809.     * Voyage of The Little Mermaid - This attraction has just
  1810.                     opened in the past year.  Although I have
  1811.                     never seen it, people have told me it is
  1812.                     spectacular!  The stage show incorporates live
  1813.                     action, AA, lasers, holographic imaging and
  1814.                     more to present the songs and other items from
  1815.                     the classic animated movie.  It stars Ariel,
  1816.                     Flounder, Sebastian and other characters from
  1817.                     the movie (including a 2 story AA Ursula).  If
  1818.                     you have small children be sure not to miss
  1819.                     this one!!  Even the adults will love it!
  1820.       Hollywood Blvd. - (Main street at the entrance to MGM) Not
  1821.                     an attraction per se.  Stroll down the
  1822.                     Hollywood of the 1930's.  Here you can star in
  1823.                     your own music video, make a movie, have your
  1824.                     picture taken on the cover of a magazine, buy
  1825.                     actual props from movies and more.  Then eat
  1826.                     at the Brown Derby.
  1827.       SUNSET BLVD. - UNDER CONSTRUCTION (For more information,
  1828.                     please refer to the "In the Future" section.)
  1829.       TWILIGHT ZONE TOWER OF TERROR - UNDER CONSTRUCTION, 8 story
  1830.                     free fall drop!! (originally 13 stories, but
  1831.                     downgraded recently to 8). (For more
  1832.                     information please refer to the "In the
  1833.                     Future" section.

  1835. Extra Shows at The Disney MGM Studios
  1836.  
  1837.     Aladdin's Royale Caravan Parade: This afternoon parade has
  1838.        many colorful floats and live actors that present Aladdin
  1839.        and his companions from the animated feature.  Camels that
  1840.        'spit' water, the Genie, Jaffar, and of course Jasmine are
  1841.        all part of the show.  Presented daily at 3pm.
  1842.  
  1843.     Sorcery in the Skies:  This laser and fireworks is presented
  1844.        nightly at MGM.  The finale includes a 4 story inflatable
  1845.        Mickey in his Sorcerer's Apprentice outfit comes out from
  1846.        behind Grummans Theater and ends the show.

  1848. PART VIII
  1849.                         **  NIGHT LIFE  **
  1850.                            ------------
  1851.  
  1852.     If you are staying in Disney World when the theme parks close
  1853. around 8pm-9pm, don't fear!!  The night is young at that time!
  1854. Almost every resort offers some type of night activity.
  1855. Personally, I enjoy going over to the Grand Floridian, sitting in
  1856. the main building and listening to the band play. It plays every
  1857. night around the same time.  The Polynesian has a 6pm and 9pm luau
  1858. every night.  Reservations are required, but it is a lot of fun.
  1859. The Contemporary Resort offers Broadway music with dinner
  1860. (Broadway at the Top Dinner Show (Reservations required 30 days in
  1861. advance)), The Outer Rim (a lounge, but they serve non-alcoholic
  1862. drinks to those under 21, and they show Monday Night football,
  1863. baseball etc.) and also WDW's largest arcade with the latest in
  1864. arcade technology. Take at least one night go up to the 15th floor
  1865. of the Contemporary resort. There is a breathtaking view of the
  1866. Vacation Kingdom up there, along with a lounge; a great place to
  1867. watch the fireworks.  For the ultimate in night-life, go to
  1868. Pleasure Island.  People under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
  1869. There is a 10 theater movie house, The Comedy Warehouse, The Neon
  1870. Armadillo (Country music), XZFR Rock & Roll Beach Club, The
  1871. Adventurers Club, and much more.  Some are night club and dancing,
  1872. others are comedy and music.  Pleasure Island's motto is "New
  1873. Year's Eve every night!!",  and they mean it: fireworks and all!!!

  1879.                            ** Dining  **

  1882.     Now for a section on places to eat.  Most restaurants in
  1883. Disney World can be expensive depending on what you order.  I'll
  1884. tell you about some of the restaurants that I have been to and
  1885. enjoyed.  Although, all the food in Disney World is great!
  1886. Reservations are required for almost all sit down restaurants.
  1887.  
  1888.     The Magic Kingdom does not have many restaurants.  I believe
  1889. there are only a few places to sit down and have a dinner.  But
  1890. there are plenty of places to snack on hot dogs, hamburgers etc.
  1891. In the Magic Kingdom try King Stephen's Banquet Hall located in
  1892. Cinderella's Castle.  Also try Tony's Town Square Cafe and the
  1893. Plaza Restaurant, both located on Main Street U.S.A.  A full
  1894. service dinner/show is available in Frontierland at the Diamond
  1895. Horseshoe (reservations required).  The Liberty Square Tavern in
  1896. Liberty Square also offers full service.  For cafeteria service
  1897. try the Crystal Palace.
  1898.  
  1899.    EPCOT Center has plenty of restaurants (More than one could ask
  1900. for!).  Future World offers the Coral Reef Restaurant in the
  1901. Living Seas pavilion.  Here you can eat seafood right next to the
  1902. aquarium!  It is really a lot of fun.  In the Land pavilion there
  1903. is The Land Grille Room restaurant.  This restaurant actually
  1904. rotates and you can see part of the rides in the building.  In
  1905. World Showcase, England's Rose and Crown Pub has great food (Like
  1906. I said before, the fish n' chips are great!)  The Chinese
  1907. restaurant Nine Dragons has excellent traditional hunan, and
  1908. szheuzan food.  Every pavilion in World Showcase has some sort of
  1909. restaurant with authentic food from that country.  Dine in France
  1910. for a romantic night, or party the Oktoberfest way in Germany.
  1911. Then hop over to Japan where your food is cooked on your table in
  1912. front of you, or head over to Italy for some pasta.  There are
  1913. almost unlimited possibilities for dining in EPCOT Center. If
  1914. hamburgers and hot dogs are all you want then head over to the
  1915. American pavilion in World Showcase, or visit the Communicore East
  1916. and West in Future World.
  1917.  
  1918.     In MGM I recommend the Brown Derby for a good meal.  The
  1919. prices are a little expensive, but it is worth it.  For something
  1920. a little out of the ordinary try The 50's Prime Time Cafe. Here
  1921. you sit in a mock "kitchen" with 50's decor while "Mom" serves the
  1922. food.  The food offered is Magnificent Meat Loaf, Granny's pot
  1923. roast, Aunt Selma's chicken salad, and alphabet soup.  While
  1924. eating you get to watch reruns of famous TV shows from the 50's
  1925. such as Car 54, Donna Reed, etc. There are also plenty of places
  1926. to get a hot dog, such as the Backstage Express, and The
  1927. Soundstage Restaurant.  For the ultimate in dining experiences try
  1928. the Sci-Fi Drive-in Diner. Set up like a drive-in movie theater
  1929. your booths are shaped like classic cars from the 1950's and you
  1930. sit underneath the "stars" and watch an actual movie while eating.
  1931.  
  1932.    In the Disney resorts there are restaurants too, and the food
  1933. is just as good as anywhere else (if not better!).  The Polynesian
  1934. Resort has excellent seafood at the Papeete Bay Verandah.  Go to
  1935. Flagler's in The Grand Floridian for a great Italian dinner
  1936. complete with accordion music and of course the song Amore.  The
  1937. Dolphin offers 7 restaurants, Port Orleans has one or two
  1938. restaurants along with a food court.  The Caribbean Beach also has
  1939. a food court, and the Contemporary has a $13.95 all-you-can-eat
  1940. buffet with roast beef, shrimp, pizza, salad, dessert and more!!
  1941.  
  1942.     There is one thing for sure though, you won't go hungry in
  1943. WDW.  You will always see some place and say: "Ooo, I think we
  1944. should try that sometime."  Yet you never get the time to sample
  1945. all of the restaurants.  So, I have compiled a list of the
  1946. restaurants that I think one should try on their visit.  Next to
  1947. the name of the restaurant is where it is located and what meals I
  1948. think you should try there (Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner).  The list
  1949. is in NO specific order.

  1982.     Ah, the dreaded part of every vacation...  Trying to figure
  1983. out what to buy your friends back at home.  There are shops all
  1984. over the place in the theme parks and resorts and this can make
  1985. shopping for the "right" gift seem quite overwhelming.  A trip
  1986. over to the Disney Marketplace (Lake Buena Vista) might be
  1987. worthwhile if you like to do all of your shopping at once.  Here
  1988. you can find almost any gift imaginable, ranging from refrigerator
  1989. magnets and stuffed toys to $5000 animation cells!  Souvenirs are
  1990. not the only items sold in the marketplace, there are also gourmet
  1991. food shops, clothing stores, a nature store, a toy store and more.
  1992.  
  1993.     For those staying in a suite or condo equipped with a kitchen
  1994. might want to go over to The Crossroads of Lake Buena Vista.  The
  1995. Crossroads (137,000 square feet) was built by Disney and then
  1996. leased out to store chains.  Goodings, a 24 hour supermarket, is a
  1997. great place to pickup food and other items such as baby needs.
  1998. A few stores in the Crossroads include: Foot Locker, McKids,
  1999. MoJo's Surfin' USA, Beyond Electronics, and Mitzi's Hallmark.
  2000. Some popular restaurant chains also reside here such as TGI
  2001. Friday's, Taco Bell, Red Lobster, Perkins, and of course the ever
  2002. popular (except with me!) McDonalds.  The Crossroads of Lake Buena
  2003. is near the WDW Hotel Plaza and is convenient to those staying the
  2004. hotel plaza and WDW's Villas.

  2013.    There are two main water parks in Walt Disney World. The two
  2014. parks were built almost 20 years apart, so obviously there are
  2015. some major advantages to the new one.  Here are some features of
  2016. each one.
  2017.  
  2018.     River Country - This water park has white sandy beaches, rope
  2019.                 swings, tube water slides, and other water
  2020.                 attractions. This park was built in  1971 and the
  2021.                 admission price is nominal:  $13.25 for an adult,
  2022.                 $10.60 children 3-9 years old.
  2023.     Typhoon Lagoon -The ultimate water park!!!  The world's
  2024.                 largest wave pool can be found here along with
  2025.                 Humunga Kowabunga. This is a body slide at an
  2026.                 incredibly steep angle in which you reach speeds
  2027.                 of 40mph!!!  Castaway Creek is a relaxing slow
  2028.                 water raft ride through tropical rain forests,
  2029.                 water falls and more.  Some of the best water
  2030.                 slides are here also along with saltwater
  2031.                 snorkeling with fish!!  The white beaches are also
  2032.                 a relaxing sight. When you're there don't forget
  2033.                 to hit Mayday Falls, Keelhall Falls, and Gangplank
  2034.                 Falls for some water slide fun.  Get the tubes
  2035.                 that hold 4 people for Gangplank Falls.  NOTE:
  2036.                 Typhoon Lagoon has been reaching capacity around
  2037.                 10-11am recently.  Plan on going early or you will
  2038.                 be turned away at the gate.

  2042.                      **  OTHER ATTRACTIONS  **

  2045.     The three theme parks and the two water parks are not the only
  2046. things to do in WDW.  During the day take time off to swim in the
  2047. pool or rent some boats.  The boats can be rented from most resort
  2048. marinas.  The fees are high, however, if you stay in a Disney
  2049. resort offering boat rental, you might be able to get a special
  2050. deal such as:  $50 will buy 2 hours of boat rental per day per
  2051. person in your party for the duration of your stay. That is an
  2052. incredible deal, since the regular price is $17.50 to rent a mini-
  2053. speed boat for 30 minutes.  Just about every resort in WDW has
  2054. some sort of pool.  Recently Disney has been going crazy with its
  2055. pool designs.  At the Beach and Yacht Club resorts the pool has a
  2056. sand bottom, at Port Orleans there is a dragon for a slide, and at
  2057. the Polynesian there is a waterslide through a fake lava mountain.
  2058. The best pool for laps is over at the Contemporary resort.
  2059.  
  2060.     Pleasure Island is the ultimate in night club entertainment.
  2061. Opening at 7pm, guests must be over 18 to enter alone. (U.S.
  2062. driver's license or passport must be presented.) Under 18 must be
  2063. accompanied by an PARENT (Yes a parent, not an adult).  Here is a
  2064. brief description of what you will find at Pleasure Island: (Age
  2065. restrictions given where applicable.)
  2066.  
  2067.     Neon Armadillo Music Saloon - The hottest live country music
  2068.             on this side of Nashville.
  2069.     XZFR Rock & Roll Beach Club - Classic rock from the 50's to
  2070.             the 90's played live.  Surf's up!!
  2071.     Mannequins Dance Palace - Contemporary music, dancing on a
  2072.             rotating dance floor with incredible sets and special
  2073.             effects. The spaceship from Close Encounters can be
  2074.             quite
  2075.             realistically reproduced here. (Ages 21 and older).
  2076.     CAGE! - Best in European and American Top 40 video dance
  2077.             music. (Ages 21 and older).
  2078.     Adventurers Club - Eccentric travelers, talking masks, and
  2079.             outrageous stories.  This 1930's explorer's club can
  2080.             have anything happen!! Good fun for the entire family.
  2081.     The Comedy Warehouse - Live stand-up comedy.  Watch 5
  2082.             hilarious comedians make fun of Disney in a way you
  2083.             will never forget!
  2084.     New Year's Eve Street Party - Live dance, band, nightclub on
  2085.             the street.  Every night countdown for a fireworks
  2086.             show, and confetti!  New Year's Eve every night!
  2087.    Shops - Shops for clothing, gifts, Disney Memorabilia, food,
  2088.              posters, and more can be found here.
  2089.    Restaurants - American barbecue at The Fireworks Factory,
  2090.              Italian food at Portobello Yacht Club and sweets at
  2091.              Sweet Surrender.  Counter service available at
  2092.              Merriweather's Market.
  2093.     AMC Pleasure Island 10 Theaters - 10 movie theaters playing
  2094.              the latest films with state-of-the-art projection and
  2095.              sound systems.
  2096.  
  2097. NOTE:  Pleasure Island will be going through some major changes
  2098.      with in the next few weeks.  Here is what is "expected" to
  2099.      happen: The CAGE! will close indefinitely and be replaced by
  2100.      "Boomer's Back Alley" with disco music, lava lamps, and the
  2101.      good old bean-bag chairs.  New Year's Every Night will still
  2102.      remain, however a Mardi-Gras theme maybe presented.
  2103.      Merriweather's Market is being converted into a Jazz Club
  2104.      that has still yet to be named.
  2105.  
  2106.  
  2107.     Discovery Island is a certified zoological park.  To get over
  2108. there you must hop aboard one of the big boats that look like
  2109. yachts.  There is a admission fee of $8.48 for adults and $4.77
  2110. for children ages 3 to 9.  Here you can explore an "exotic" island
  2111. with all sorts of wildlife on it.  See toucans, parrots,
  2112. flamingos, giant turtles, and more.  There are streams and foot
  2113. bridges throughout the island.  It is a nice place to escape from
  2114. the everyday hustle and bustle of WDW.  Take note: NO drinking
  2115. straws are allowed on the island.  As the animals might strangle
  2116. themselves.
  2117.  
  2118.     Fort Wilderness offers, biking, canoeing, campfires, and more.
  2119. If you are a golfer then you are in heaven.  Six PGA championship
  2120. tour courses are at your disposal (The Magnolia, The Palm, The
  2121. Lake Buena Vista, The Disney Village Clubhouse, The Osprey Ridge,
  2122. and The Eagle Pines courses) offering a total of 99 holes!  The
  2123. Oldsmobile Golf Classic is held annually on the Palm and Magnolia
  2124. courses.
  2125.  
  2126.     If you really become bored (very doubtful) you can leave
  2127. Disney property and head over to Universal Studios Florida or Sea
  2128. World of Florida.  Both offer an enjoyable day under the Florida
  2129. sun.  Farther away (1hr and 30mins) is Kennedy Space Center.  This
  2130. is a great place to learn about NASA's programs, the space
  2131. shuttle, and the heavens above.  You can see the space shuttle
  2132. here among other NASA artifacts.  One can see the launch of the
  2133. space shuttle if you go at the right time (a once in a lifetime
  2134. event!).
  2135.

  2137. PART XIII
  2138.                            **  TIPS  **
  2139.                               ------
  2140.  
  2141.        Here are some basic tips for ANY Disney theme park:
  2142.  
  2143. 1. Arrive 10-30 minutes before the park opens!!!  Have a light
  2144.     breakfast (bagel w/cream cheese, cereal, coffee, juice etc.).
  2145. 2. Quickly go to the most popular attractions first!!  Those are
  2146.     the attractions I have marked with a @ sign. Go on as many as
  2147.     you can before the lines get too long.  At EPCOT, start
  2148.     halfway around Future World, instead of at Spaceship Earth.
  2149. 3. Make reservations for dinner around 9-10pm.  Your reservations
  2150.     should be set for about 4-5pm.
  2151. 4. Eat lunch before the crowds do.  11am is usually good. (I know
  2152.     it probably doesn't sound too good to eat lunch early, but you
  2153.     won't have to fight larger lines!)
  2154. 5. WHEN ENTERING ANY RIDE ALWAYS GO TO INTO THE LEFT LINE!!!!!
  2155.     Why? - Most people are right brained and right handed so they
  2156.       assume right is better. (I am not making this up.) I found
  2157.       this to be true.
  2158. 6. Parade time!! (3pm) Now, you have eaten lunch, and the rest of
  2159.    the crowds are watching the parade, quick you have 1 hour to
  2160.    see the popular rides!!
  2161. 7. Eat dinner around 4:30-5:30pm. After 5pm the lines for the
  2162.    rides start to shorten.  Then go on more rides.
  2163. 8. Fireworks, parades, Illuminations, are now being presented.
  2164.    (9pm, 11pm etc.) Quickly go on more rides, putting emphasis on
  2165.    the popular ones.
  2166. 9a. Stay until the park closes (providing your kids aren't asleep
  2167.      yet!), going on the more popular rides as it gets later.
  2168. 9b. Return to your hotel, get washed-up and go to one of the
  2169.      resorts and walk around.  For kids go to the Contemporary
  2170.      resort, there is a huge arcade there.  For couples I
  2171.      recommend a romantic walk on the Polynesian's beach or relax
  2172.      to the big band music at the Grand Floridian.
  2173. 10. Sleep and start over. (Or stay up all night...)
  2174.  
  2175.   Change this around anyway you want, but numbers 1, 2, 4, 5, 6,
  2176.             8, and 9 are the most important!!
  2177.  
  2178.                       **  Insider's Tips  **
  2179.                          ----------------
  2180.  
  2181.      Here are some tips that will help you make the most out of
  2182. the time that you have allotted for your vacation.  These tips are
  2183. the way that I visit the park.
  2184.  
  2185.     1. Always go in the LEFT line while queuing up for an
  2186.         attraction.  (Don't ask why, just do it!) A good example
  2187.         of this is the Pirates of the Caribbean.
  2188.     2. Go on the most popular rides during parades, fireworks,
  2189.         shows etc.  Lines usually decrease 50-80 percent.
  2190.     3. Stay until the park closes.  Again the lines dissipate.
  2191.     4. Midday is the worst time, so visit the park in the morning
  2192.         around noon go back to the hotel and go for a swim.  Eat
  2193.         dinner around 4-4:30, and then head back to the parks.
  2194.     5. Make reservations in advance for ALL restaurants.
  2195.     6. Do all your shopping at once.
  2196.     7. Watch ANY Magic Kingdom parade (Daily parade, Spectromagic,
  2197.         etc.) from Liberty Square or Frontierland. There are
  2198.         little or no people there.
  2199.     8. If you are pressured for time, you may want to refrain from
  2200.         visiting Pleasure Island, Discovery Island, River Country
  2201.         or Typhoon Lagoon.
  2202.     9. While on the Backstage Tour at MGM, don't worry who is
  2203.         first, as people in the front, middle, and rear have equal
  2204.         viewing areas.
  2205.    10. Ride 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea at night.  Not only are
  2206.         the lines much shorter, but the effects are the same due
  2207.         to the fact that 95% of the ride takes place inside a
  2208.         building!
  2209.    11. If you are staying at the Grand Floridian or the
  2210.         Polynesian Resorts you might want to take the small boat
  2211.         back from the Magic Kingdom, as is usually faster than the
  2212.         monorail and you don't have to fight with the crowds.
  2213.    12. If you are staying in a WDW resort take the resort monorail
  2214.         rather than the Magic Kingdom monorail.  It has more
  2215.         stops, but you don't have to fight the crowds.
  2216.    13. For those residing at the Polynesian Resort: Walk to the
  2217.         TTC (or the Ferry Boat), don't take the monorail.
  2218.    14. In the American Adventure in EPCOT, people queue up in the
  2219.         far upper right corner of the first floor.  Try to be in
  2220.         the Middle of the crowd, as you will have the best seats.
  2221.    15. After riding Maelstrom in the Norway pavilion there is a
  2222.         short movie.  If you just want to go on the ride, one DOES
  2223.         have enough time to walk through the theater and exit
  2224.         before the film begins.
  2225.    16. If the line for Maelstrom in the Norway pavilion extends
  2226.         outside the building, beware, the wait will be 20-30
  2227.         minutes.
  2228.    17. Board the Skyway (in the Magic Kingdom) in Tomorrowland
  2229.         rather than Fantasyland, as it is almost always shorter.
  2230.    18. In EPCOT Center people will begin to save their spots for
  2231.         Illuminations as early as 6:00 for the 9:00 show. I
  2232.         recommend saving your spot around 7-8pm, but if it starts
  2233.         to look crowded around the lagoon grab your spot.
  2234.    19. If you want to ride in the cab of the monorail, just ask
  2235.         an attendant.  For you best chances ask at either EPCOT
  2236.         Center or the TTC (EPCOT monorail).  It works 99% of the
  2237.         time!! (Children will be thrilled to ride in the front.)
  2238.    20. When the time rolls around for the park to close, stick
  2239.         around and walk through the park.  They won't kick you
  2240.         out, and it is something to see the parks at night with no
  2241.         one there.

  2462. and it is updated and easier to read.  All versions after May '92

  2497.    Here are some interesting and trivial facts about WDW to test
  2498.              your and your friend's knowledge with!!
  2499.  
  2500. 1. Built in 1917 the Golden Carousel in The Magic Kingdom
  2501.     originally came from Olympic Park in Maplewood, NJ.  The
  2502.     carousel was refurbished, and all horses painted white.
  2503.     (My mom rode this when she was little in the 1950's)
  2504. 2. The Walt Disney World Railroad locomotives were originally used
  2505.     in Mexico to haul sugar!  They were completely refurbished and
  2506.     the four locomotives were given the names:  Lilly Belle, Roy
  2507.     O.  Disney, Walter E. Disney, and the Roger Broggie.
  2508. 3. Cinderellas Castle is 180 feet high, and has a private
  2509.     apartment in the castle that Walt designed so he could stay
  2510.     overnight in the park.  Unfortunately he never got to use it.
  2511. 4. The Jungle Cruise attraction uses 100 gas-fired heaters to heat
  2512.     up the air to keep the tropical plants growing. 25 million
  2513.     BTU's kick in when the temperature drops below 36 degrees
  2514.     Fahrenheit.
  2515. 5. The Swiss Family Treehouse is artificial, with 42 foot roots,
  2516.     800,000 vinyl leaves, and 600+ branches.
  2517. 6. The Big Thunder Mountain Railroad track is 2,780 feet long, is
  2518.     on 2.5 acres of land, took 15 years of planning, 2 years of
  2519.     construction, 650 tons of steel, and 16,000 gallons of paint.
  2520.     When finished in 1981 it cost $17 million, or the entire cost
  2521.     of Disneyland in 1955!! The fastest speed on the ride is 30
  2522.     some mph.
  2523. 7. The nautical flags that fly at 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
  2524.     attraction were once hung wrong!  A navy officer pointed it
  2525.     out when the park first opened, instead of reading "Leagues"
  2526.     it read "seugael".  The attraction's lagoon contains 11.5
  2527.     million gallons of water!!
  2528. 8. Space Mountain is 180+ feet tall, 300+ feet in diameter, has
  2529.     4,508,500 cubic feet of space, occupies a 10 acre site, and is
  2530.     composed of 72 pre-stressed concrete beams weighing 74 tons
  2531.     each! The ride never exceeds 28mph, slower than Big Thunder
  2532.     Mountain!
  2533. 9. Mission to Mars was originally named Flight to the Moon.  It
  2534.     was changed in 1975 after the dream of landing men on the
  2535.     moon had become a reality.
  2536. 10. The mini-race cars on the Grand Prix Raceway cost over $6,000
  2537.      each.  The track is 2,260 feet long and the cars go 7mph max.
  2538. 11. Spaceship Earth is 164 feet in diameter, 180 feet high, and
  2539.      contains 2,200,000 cubic feet of space.  The outside "skin"
  2540.      of the geosphere is made up of 954 triangular panels, none of
  2541.      equal size or shape.  Spaceship Earth is NOT perfectly round,
  2542.      so it is not a geodesic dome, the word geosphere was born.
  2543. 12. The Living Seas tank is 27 feet deep, 200 feet in diameter,
  2544.      and contains 5.7 million gallons of seawater.  The acrylic
  2545.      windows are 18 feet high, and 8 inches thick!
  2546. 13. The Wonders of Life is enclosed in a 100,000 square foot
  2547.      geodesic dome.  The attraction cost $100 million!
  2548. 14. In The Universe of Energy, the moving theater cars weigh
  2549.      30,000 lbs when fully loaded with 96 passengers.  However
  2550.      they are guided by a wire on the floor that is only 1/8 inch
  2551.      thick!!
  2552. 15. There are more than 6,000 different food items available at
  2553.      Walt Disney World!
  2554. 16. Disney World uses 5.5 million pounds of potatoes each year
  2555.      just to make french fries!  That's enough julienned potatoes
  2556.      to circle the world 2.5 times.
  2557. 17. In 1990 22 tons of vegetables were grown in the Land
  2558.      Pavilion's greenhouse.
  2559. 18. There are 166 restaurants and snack spots from which to
  2560.      choose from, and 35 varieties of cheese are served.
  2561. 19. The chefs offer up 400 cases of fresh fruit daily.
  2562. 20. Visitors order 2.1 million pounds of seafood each year and
  2563.      over twice that in poultry.
  2564. 21. Each year WDW serves enough hamburgers to cover every inch of
  2565.      a four-hundred mile line.
  2566. 22. The Caribbean Beach resort contains 2,112 rooms, making it the
  2567.      sixth largest hotel complex in the United States!!
  2568. 23. The creation of Walt Disney World became the largest private
  2569.      construction project in the United States ever.
  2570. 24. The Vacation Kingdom of the World was going to be called
  2571.      Disney World, but it was Walt's brother Roy who insisted that
  2572.      it be called WALT Disney World.
  2573. 25. "By early 1992 hotels on Walt Disney World property will
  2574.      provide more than 17,000 guest rooms and 580,000 square feet
  2575.      of meeting space."
  2576. 26. By opening day on October 1, 1971 there were 60,000 trees and
  2577.      shrubs planted.  Enough sod was used to cover 500 football
  2578.      fields.
  2579. 27. Walt Disney World has recently acquired new monorails.
  2580.      Talking to the driver I found out that:  The new monorails
  2581.      began their daily runs in August of '91; and the monorails
  2582.      are now all computerized with a speed restriction: 40mph.
  2583.      Although, the driver of the monorail stated that on test runs
  2584.      they have gone 90mph and could go faster!!
  2585. 28. The lost and found department of WDW holds more than a
  2586.      thousand hand tagged items lost by visitors.  Some items that
  2587.      were lost include: a wheelchair, a lamp, a Casio portable
  2588.      organ, and fake ID's.  A pair of false teeth and a glass eye
  2589.      were never claimed!!
  2590. 29. The Magic Kingdom itself is actually on the 2nd floor!!!  A
  2591.      complete maze of service tunnels is under the park!!  The
  2592.      tunnels contain the wardrobe and sanitation departments,
  2593.      employee lounges and cafeterias, computer networks, and more!
  2594. 30. Some people may think that Disneyland in California is just as
  2595.      big as the Magic Kingdom in Florida. Wrong...  Disneyland can
  2596.      fit inside of the main parking lot for the Magic Kingdom, or
  2597.      in the lagoon in EPCOT Center!
  2598. 31. In 1991 28 MILLION people visited WDW as it ranked #1 in
  2599.      attendance for theme parks across the U.S.!!  Disneyland in
  2600.      California ranked #2 with 11.6 million visitors.
  2601. 32. Take a look at your tour guide for MGM.  If you look at the
  2602.      map of the park upside down you will notice that the
  2603.      landscaping and buildings form the head of Mickey Mouse. This
  2604.      is not just on the map as the park was built that way.
  2605. 33. Did you know that Mickey Mouse is hidden somewhere in the
  2606.      following attractions??  Body Wars, The World of Motion, Star
  2607.      Tours, Horizons, The Great Movie Ride, Splash Mountain, Big
  2608.      Thunder Mountain, Cinderella's Castle, Kitchen Kabaret,
  2609.      Symbiosis, The Land Pavillion, Spaceship Earth, Maelstrom and
  2610.      more!!  (But I'm not telling you where!)
  2611. 34. Splash Mountain is one of the steepest and fastest log flumes
  2612.     in the world: 5 story 47 degree drop with a top speed of
  2613.     40mph.
