  7. WHAT IS QEMM 7.0?
  8. -----------------
  9. QEMM 7.0 is the newest version of Quarterdeck's award-winning memory manager
  10. for your 386, 486, or Pentium-based computer.  It will give you more memory
  11. for your DOS or Microsoft Windows programs than any other existing memory
  12. manager.
  13.  
  14. QEMM 7.0 introduces a number of new features. This document will give you an
  15. overview of the new features and changes since 6.0, and will go into detail on
  16. some of the more important and interesting ones.

  19. WHAT NEW FEATURES DOES QEMM 7.0 HAVE?
  20. -------------------------------------
  21. DOS-UP:
  22. QEMM 7.0 introduces DOS-UP, which will allow you to increase your available
  23. conventional memory, even if you already have everything loaded high.  It does
  24. this by moving the portions of DOS that DOS=HIGH doesn't move.  More on this
  25. later.

  27. OPTIMIZE improvements:
  28. OPTIMIZE can now account for programs that load themselves high; it is aware
  29. of DOS conditionals (such as IF and FOR); it has improved detection of
  30. Adapter-RAM and other trouble-spots above 640K; and it is now fully aware of
  31. MS-DOS 6's multiple configuration boot setup (something even Microsoft's own
  32. MemMaker can't handle).

  34. VIDRAM improvements:
  35. VIDRAM is now capable of working in a Microsoft Windows Enhanced Mode DOS
  36. Window, as well as from normal DOS.  This will allow your DOS text-mode
  37. programs to access an additional 96k of conventional memory, bringing your
  38. maximum available to almost 704K in a DOS partition of MS Windows.

  40. QEMM Setup program:
  41. A new program that comes with QEMM 7 is called QSetup.  It allows you to
  42. change the configuration of QEMM, DOS-UP, ST-DBL, QDPMI, and the other QEMM
  43. programs, without having to manually edit a single text file.  All of the
  44. available options are available on menus with full help explaining what each
  45. one does.  In addition, troubleshooting support is built-in to QSetup, so it
  46. is easier to give QEMM the information it needs to cope with rare or
  47. non-standard hardware.

  49. 32-bit performance:
  50. Major portions of QEMM have been rewritten to use 32 bit code; this results in
  51. faster operation, and less conventional memory overhead.  (Less than 1K of
  52. your conventional memory is used by QEMM).

  54. Compatibility enhancements:
  55. QEMM 7 also has a number of compatability improvements designed to make more
  56. software work better than ever before.  It now supports VESA, and can save and
  57. restore the vectors as necessary.  It knows about more types of Shadow RAM,
  58. Compaq Models, and Bus-Mastering disk drive controllers than it did before. It
  59. has special features for the Intel Pentium, that allows it to use less memory
  60. and work faster on those machines.

  63. WHAT IS DOS-UP?
  64. ---------------
  65. DOS-UP is a set of utility programs that QEMM and Optimize use to load more of
  66. your DOS kernel (the actual DOS program and its data) into upper memory. This
  67. will give you more conventional memory than ever before, even if you already
  68. have everything on your system loading high.

  70. DOS-UP actually consists of two drivers: DOSDATA.SYS and DOS-UP.SYS. Both are
  71. necessary for DOS-UP to work properly.
  72.  
  73. DOSDATA.SYS needs to be the very first line in your CONFIG.SYS. Its purpose is
  74. to "prepare" DOS so that it is in the proper place to be loaded into your
  75. upper memory.

  77. DOS-UP.SYS comes after QEMM loads in the CONFIG.SYS. It does the actual work
  78. of moving the pieces of DOS into High RAM, and making sure that other programs
  79. will know about this new location.

  81. DOS-UP can give DOS 5 and 6 users an additional 7 to 20k of conventional
  82. memory, and can give DOS 3 and 4 users an additional 50 to 60k (depending on
  83. their prior configuration).  It also allows you to get DOS out of your
  84. conventional memory without DOS=HIGH, which allows DESQview or some other HMA
  85. user to have the full 64k of HMA, instead of only the 35K that DOS=HIGH uses
  86. by default.

  89. What about support for Disk Compression programs?
  90. -------------------------------------------------
  91. QEMM 7.0 has better support for disk compression programs such as DoubleSpace,
  92. Stacker, and Superstor.  Both QEMM and Optimize will recognize the disk
  93. compression program and make sure that they are handled correctly.  In
  94. addition, there is a special Stealth DoubleSpace feature which saves even
  95. more memory.

  98. What about Manifest?
  99. --------------------
  100. QEMM 7.0 comes with the newest version of our award-winning Manifest: Version
  101. 2.0.   Manifest lets you take a look "under the hood" of your computer.  It's
  102. the best way to find out exactly what's going on inside your machine.

  104. There are quite a few new features and information screens incorporated into
  105. the new Manifest 2.0.  It now has built-in editors for your system
  106. configuration files (CONFIG.SYS, AUTOEXEC.BAT, WIN.INI, and SYSTEM.INI),
  107. all available at the touch of a hotkey.  It will now show you information on
  108. your Microsoft Windows configuration, as well as your DOS configuration.  It
  109. includes information on the version and drivers that Windows is using.  It
  110. also provides enhanced network information, showing network type, servers,
  111. drive mapping, and login information.  It provides more information on your
  112. video than ever before, including the make and model of your video card, and
  113. the amount of memory installed on it.  It provides full information on your
  114. battery condition on those laptops that support the "Advanced Power
  115. Management" specification.  Finally, it shows you complete information on
  116. every type of memory available for your computer today, including EMS, XMS,
  117. VCPI, and DPMI memory.

  120. How can I get an upgrade? How much will it cost?
  121. ------------------------------------------------
  122. The cost to upgrade from any version of QEMM to version 7.0 is $35, plus $5
  123. shipping and handling.  If you purchased a prior release after April 15, 1993,
