SUGGESTED DISASTER PREPAREDNESS
CHECKLIST FOR CITIZENS
1. Fill all automobile gas tanks. (and oil and radiator)
2. Store plenty of drinking/cooking water in plastic containers.
3. Clean and fill bathtub with tap water for flushing toilet,
laundry, and other non-consumption purposes.
4. Stock up on 1 week's worth non-perishable foods.
Remember a non-electric can opener, and baby needs.
5. Pick up loose objects outside of your house, and store them.
Examples: garbage cans, tools, swings, patio furniture, etc.
6. Decide what to do with your pets. Pets will not be allowed in
shelters.
7. Be sure your family has required medications on hand.
8. Buy and store fresh batteries for radios and flashlights.
9. Be prepared to board up or tape the windows and glass doors on
your house. Buy and store supplies needed ahead of time.
10. Monitor battery-powered radio and/or television for weather,
special advisories, shelter locations, and evacuation informa-
tion. (in Central Florida tune to WDBO RADIO, 580 AM
for ALL advice and instructions).
11. Have trash container(s) with plenty of plastic trash bags.
12. Un-plug sensitive electronics such as TV's, VCR's, and
computers, and turn off the air conditioner to avoid damages
from lightning surges. If you have cable TV, disconnect
cable wire from the wall outlet.
13. Turn refrigerator and freezer temperature down to its coldest
setting and keep refrigerator doors closed to keep food cool
in case the power does go out.
14. Have at least one flashlight and extra batteries handy.
15. Candles and matches and/or lighters should be on hand also.
16. Lower swimming pool water level and super-chlorinate pool.
Do NOT drain the pool.
17. Stay indoors, away from windows as much as possible. Only
drive if you absolutely must.
18. Be a good friend and offer your home as shelter to friends
or relatives who live in vulnerable areas or mobile homes.
19. If you own a boat, moor it securely or move it to a designated
safe area.
20. Cooperate with police and fire department officials if they
advise you to evacuate.
NOTE: Evacuees, who do not use public shelters, are urged to
register their locations by calling the Red Cross before
(or after) the disaster so that relatives and friends can
be assisted in locating disaster victims.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR EVACUEES
1. See Disaster Preparedness Checklist for Citizens
2. Ensure that all water faucets are tightly turned off to
prevent storm water backflow into your home's water pipes.
3. Turn off power at the main service disconnect panel. This
should be done before water rises in your home. Do not
touch the panel while your hands or feet are wet.
4. Plug only individual appliances into a portable power
generator. Never connect a generator to wall outlets, wiring
of a building, or home's electrical system.
5. Avoid downed power lines and be especially aware of lines
near metal fences (that will become conductors).
6. Follow the traffic routes announced by public officials and
police at road blocks or check points. Shelter locations
that are open will be announced on the radio and TV.
7. Have valid identification with current local home address
on it (ie: drivers license, state ID card, military ID)
8. Turn off water and gas lines.
9. Check on neighbors to make sure they are aware and made plans.
10. Contact friends and relatives to let them know where you are
going.
11. Take a packed "Survival Kit" with you to shelter containing:
a. All important documents such as birth certificates,
marriage license, insurance policies, house mortgage
papers, bank books, etc. These forms may be needed
after the storm to make an insurance claim or recover
losses.
b. Canned goods and non-perishable food items for at least
a 3-day stay if necessary. (and any special diet foods)
c. Drinking water in plastic gallon containers for at least
a 3-day stay if necessary.
d. Change(s) of clothing.
e. Sleeping bags, blankets, pillows, or cots.
f. Medication needs for family members.
g. Plastic plates, utensils, cups, and can opener.
h. Formula, bottles, diapers and wipes, clothing, other
baby needs.
i. Flashlight, portable radio and batteries for both.
j. Small, quiet games for children.
k. Ice cooler with ice for formulas or needed perishables.
l. Cash - Remember to withdraw money from the automatic
teller machines early since a power outage may leave
them inoperable for awhile.
Optional items: Sterno cooking fuel, emergency cooking utensils,
first aid kit, candles and matches/lighters, valuable jewelry
items. DO NOT BRING ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES OR PETS TO A SHELTER.
