  7. This is a catalog of journals and newsletters relating to Jewish 
  8. genealogy.  Most Jewish Genealogical Societies (JGS's) publish a 
  9. newsletter.  These vary greatly in their number of pages per issue 
  10. (from 4 to 50 or more), tone (from chatty to scholarly), and 
  11. production quality (printing process, binding, paper type, etc.) 
  12.  
  13.      Some of the smaller newsletters stress society administra- 
  14. tive matters.  Nearly all newsletters borrow from other newslet- 
  15. ters.  Some borrow a little information, some borrow a whole lot. 
  16. Newsletters from the larger cities (New York, Philadelphia, and 
  17. Los Angeles, for example) have a well-balanced selection of 
  18. material, including feature articles addressing specific aspects 
  19. of research.  Some of the "meatier" newsletters are published by 
  20. the JGS's of Canada, Cleveland, Illinois and Great Britain.

  22.      Several newsletters, while not tipping any scales, are 
  23. nevertheless informative and pleasurable reading.  These include 
  24. the Greater Washington and San Francisco newsletters. 
  25.  
  26.      I am purposefully avoiding recommending a subscription to 
  27. any of these publications with one exception: Avotaynu, The 
  28. International Review of Jewish Genealogy.  Avotaynu is THE source 
  29. for Jewish genealogy.  By all means, check out the others, and if 
  30. you like what you find, or if you have an interest in the location 
  31. served by those other newsletters, subscribe.  Every newsletter 
  32. offers something, and you never know where you're going to find 
  33. just the information that you need.

  35.      Following is a catalog of newsletters related to Jewish 
  36. genealogy.  Unless noted otherwise, all newsletters are quarterly; 
  37. payments are to be made to the listed organization; the amounts 
  38. are for a one year subscription.  In nearly all cases, the sub- 
  39. scription amount is considered the payment of dues for a non-local 
  40. member; local subscribers or memberships will probably cost more. 
  41. Overseas subscribers should expect to pay additional.  Some infor- 
  42. mation may not be current.  Be prepared for changes.

  44.      Nearly all of the American-Jewish genealogy newsletters 
  45. published between 1977 and 1990 were microfiched by Avotaynu in
