  22.                           NIPS*93 Post-Conference Workshops
  23.                                December 3 and 4, 1993
  24.                                    Vail, Colorado

  26.           Following  the  regular  program  of   the   Neural   Information
  27.           Processing  Systems  1993 conference, workshops on current topics
  28.           in neural information processing will be held on December  3  and
  29.           4,  1993,  in Vail, Colorado.  Proposals by qualified individuals
  30.           interested in chairing one  of  these  workshops  are  solicited.
  31.           Past   topics   have  included:   active  learning  and  control;
  32.           architectural issues; attention; bayesian analysis;  benchmarking
  33.           neural  network  applications;  computational  complexity issues;
  34.           computational neuroscience;  fast  training  techniques;  genetic
  35.           algorithms;   music;   neural   network  dynamics;  optimization;
  36.           recurrent   nets;   rules   and   connectionist   models;   self-
  37.           organization; sensory biophysics; speech; time series prediction;
  38.           vision; and VLSI and optical implementations.

  40.           The goal of the workshops is to provide  an  informal  forum  for
  41.           researchers  to  discuss  important  issues  of current interest.
  42.           Sessions will meet in the morning and in the  afternoon  of  both
  43.           days,  with  free time in between for ongoing individual exchange
  44.           or outdoor activities.  Concrete open and/or controversial issues
  45.           are  encouraged  and  preferred  as workshop topics.  Individuals
  46.           proposing  to  chair  a  workshop  will   have   responsibilities
  47.           including:   arranging  short  informal  presentations by experts
  48.           working on the topic, moderating or leading  the  discussion  and
  49.           reporting its high points, findings, and conclusions to the group
  50.           during evening plenary sessions (the "gong show"), and writing  a
  51.           brief (2 page) summary.

  53.           Submission Procedure:  Interested parties should submit  a  short
  54.           proposal  for  a workshop of interest postmarked by May 22, 1993.
  55.           (Express mail is *not* necessary.  Submissions by electronic mail
  56.           will  also  be  accepted.)  Proposals  should  include a title, a
  57.           description of what the workshop is to  address  and  accomplish,
  58.           and  the  proposed  length of the workshop (one day or two days).
  59.           It should motivate why the topic is of interest or controversial,
  60.           why  it  should  be  discussed  and  what  the  targeted group of
  61.           participants is.  In addition, please send a brief resume of  the
  62.           prospective  workshop  chair, a list of publications and evidence
  63.           of scholarship in the field of interest.
