1. General Introduction:
========================
"A Millionaire of Yesterday" is the fourth in the "Golden Gale" series
of electronic books. The format and the reader's interface are both
new. Many features, such as full VGA colour control and smooth
scrolling, are found in few other programs.
The reader program GGB004.EXE is an original work protected by the
laws of copyright. It is distributed as "shareware". This means that
you may try it out for a limited period (ten days) to see whether
it is useful.
If, after you have tried it out, you do find "A Millionaire of Yesterday"
useful, please register your copy. Registration is done by printing out
the registration form (in the file GGB004.REG), filling it in, and
sending it, together with the appropriate fee (US$25 or equivalent
in other currencies) to either of the two following addresses:
Robert Bamford, Robert Bamford,
GPO Box 1235, OR BM Box Potence,
Sydney, NSW 2001, London WC1V 6XX,
Australia. England.
When you register this book you may choose two additional books
which will be sent to you for no additional charge. You may also
request free Covox speech versions of any of the three books.
The file GGB004.ADV contains a detailed description of everything
you will receive in return for the registration fee. It also
contains a list of other computerized books available, and tells
you how you can obtain a computerized version of any book which
has ever been published.
This software (all seven files, please) may be freely uploaded to
bulletin boards, copied, and given away, provided that it is not
used for longer than ten days without being registered, and
provided that it is not sold.
Improvements will be made and a number of new functions will be
added over the course of the months to come. Your reactions and
suggestions will be most welcome.
2. Description of the Files:
============================
Only three files are REQUIRED to read this book:
GGB004.EXE - the reader program
GGB004.DCO - the syntactical rules
GGB004.TCO - the text
The following files are OPTIONAL; they are not necessary to read the
book:
GGB004.DOC - the documentation file, containing a description
of how to use the program
GGB004.ADV - our advertisement, containing a description of
all the other books and services now available
GGB004.REG - a short and convenient order form which you may
print out and fill in to register this book and
order other items
READ.ME - this file
The following file will be created when you run the program:
GGB004.CNF - a configuration file, containing your chosen
margin settings, colours, scrolling speed,
and your own bookmarks
You can rename GGB004.EXE to anything you like: MILLION.EXE for
instance. But the .DCO and .TCO files should not be renamed.
3. How to Begin Reading the Book:
=================================
To read the book, copy the files you need to a directory where you
want to keep them, on a hard disk or a floppy. Make that directory
the current directory, type:
GGB004
and press ENTER or RETURN.
For computers with grey-scale displays, for best results you
should use the /G command line switch as follows:
GGB004 /G
Once the title screen has appeared, you may press F1 to see a
summary of keyboard usage, or press any other key to begin reading
the book.
Please note that the reader program requires a 386 or 486 CPU, and a
VGA (colour or grey-scale) display. The program will run properly on
some portable computers (for example Toshiba 1850), but others (Mitac
for instance) do not handle standard 8x16 fonts and the results will
be less than satisfactory. Some older portables will even display
nothing at all.
The program will start more quickly when run from a hard disk. When it
is run from a floppy, a few seconds will elapse while the text is being
read in to RAM. Once the text has been read in, and the first page of
the book has been displayed, the program will run at the same speed
regardless of whether it was started from a hard disk or a floppy.
For a detailed description of the program, please refer to the
documentation file (GGB004.DOC).
