  12. 1. Registration of your Golden Gale Book:
  13. =========================================

  15.     In accordance with the "shareware" system, you should register this
  16.     book if you want to retain it for more than one month.
  17.  
  18.     In return for the payment of a small registration fee, you will
  19.     receive the following:
  20.  
  21.       1) The latest version on a disk (3 1/2 inch or 5 1/4 inch).
  22.  
  23.       2) Two further books of your choice.
  24.  
  25.       3) On request, separate speaking versions of these three books,
  26.          which can be used with the Covox "Speech Thing" equipment.
  27.          These speaking versions will be supplied to you free of charge.
  28.  
  29.       4) Full documentation, both on disk and in printed form, of how
  30.          to use the program.
  31.  
  32.       5) A list of all available books; sent to you quarterly (but
  33.          discontinued after one year if you make no further orders).
  34.  
  35.       6) Information about improved versions of existing books as they
  36.          become available. Features which will be available shortly
  37.          include illustrations, improved speech for various sound cards,
  38.          improved search facilities, Adobe Type 1 proportionally-spaced
  39.          fonts, extended reader's notes, and so on.
  40.  
  41.       7) Eligibility to upgrade to subsequent versions at a reduced price.

  43.     To print out the registration form, turn on your printer, insert
  44.     a sheet of paper, and at the DOS prompt type:
  45.  
  46.                            COPY GGB001.REG PRN
  47.  
  48.     and then strike the Enter or Return key. The form contains 58 lines,
  49.     so it should fit on one sheet of paper.
  50.  
  51.     Then fill it in and send it, together with your cheque, draft, or
  52.     money order (thank you very much!), to one of the two addresses
  53.     given on the form.

  56. 2. How to Order Additional Books:

  59.     You are welcome to order further books from our lists at any
  60.     time. Just drop us a line with your requirements. Please use the
  61.     prices stated on the line "further books" on the registration
  62.     form in the file GGB001.REG

  68.     1) "The Picture of Dorian Gray", by Oscar Wilde. 1891
  69.        Notorious book about a fine-featured young man and his conscience.
  70.  
  71.     2) "A Comedy of Masks", by Ernest Dowson and Arthur Moore. 1893
  72.        Dowson is better known for his poetry; nevertheless this
  73.        book is a classic with a strong fin de siècle atmosphere.
  74.  
  75.     3) "Mike Fletcher", by George Moore. 1889
  76.        A young man spends much of his life pursuing the female sex.
  77.        Read what happens to him!
  78.  
  79.     4) "A Millionaire of Yesterday", by Edward Phillips Oppenheim. 1900
  80.        Adventure in darkest Africa, and a lad's devotion.

  82.     5) "Jeremy at Crale", by Hugh Walpole. 1927
  83.        School story for grown-ups. Rather a lot of football, but
  84.        nonetheless many good things.
  85.  
  86.     6) "Gods, and their Makers", by Laurence Housman. 1897
  87.        A boy and a girl in savage lands. Short poetical fantasy,
  88.        unusual, and much more rewarding than it appears to be at
  89.        first sight.

  91.     7) "Scientific Fact and Metaphysical Reality", by Robert
  92.        Brandon Arnold. 1904
  93.        The only book he published. It deals with the relationship
  94.        between philosophy and the science of that era. There is a lot
  95.        about the ether, for example, which is not often discussed
  96.        nowadays. "Motor-car orgies" come into it, as well.

  98.     8) "The Book-Bills of Narcissus", by Richard le Gallienne. 1895
  99.        A short book containing densely-woven reflections on the spiritual
  100.        progress of a young poet.
  101.  
  102.     9) "The Upton Letters", by Arthur Christopher Benson. 1905
  103.        A school-teacher's letters to his old friend. Very good on
  104.        English life and country-side; evokes its period admirably.
  105.        Many exceptionally wise observations. Benson wrote the words
  106.        of "Land of Hope and Glory"; there is a "Land of Hope" in
  107.        this book too.

  109.    10) "What IS Thought?", by James Hutchison Stirling. 1900
  110.        Discusses German Idealism in an exuberent and amusing Scottish
  111.        style. Admirable on Kant: ("I do not take Immanuel to have
  112.        believed in miracle, in inspiration, or even in ecstasy--poor
  113.        man! he was never married.") Much that is penetrating and
  114.        illuminating about Schelling, but he is wrong-headed, I think,
  115.        about the relative achievements of Schelling and Hegel. In
  116.        remarks like "It is certain relations that are alone in question,
  117.        and alone the truth" he is much closer to the truth than most
  118.        writers.

  120.    11) "David Blaize", by Edward Frederic Benson. 1916
  121.        Another school story for grown-ups; a lot is either barely
  122.        stated, or goes on under the surface.

  125. 4. How to Obtain any Book of Your Choice in this Format:
  126. ========================================================

  128.     You may have any book of your choice turned into computerized
  129.     form. This applies, in principle, to any printed book, whether
  130.     rare or common, and to your own typed manuscripts, electronic
  131.     texts, and so on.
  132.  
  133.     There are a number of options, depending on four main
  134.     factors:
  135.  
  136.        a) whether the text already exists in electronic form or
  137.           has to be scanned in,
  138.  
  139.        b) whether we are permitted to keep the copyright on the
  140.           computerized book, or you want to retain it for your
  141.           own use,
  142.  
  143.        c) the length of the book,
  144.  
  145.        d) if the book has to be scanned in, the quality of type
  146.           in the original text. This can be measured in terms of
  147.           the number of manual corrections which have to be made
  148.           to each scanned page.
  149.  
  150.     Thus our current prices (in US dollars) can be expressed in
  151.     terms of those four factors:
  152.  
  153.     a) text already in electronic form, copyright to be retained by
  154.        us:
  155.              up to 80,000 words ..................... $50

  197.     Note that illustrations are not YET handled (but will be soon), nor
  198.     are large quantities of non-standard scripts such as Fraktur or
  199.     Russian or Greek.

  201.     If the book is of the kind commonly available in a typical large
  202.     university library, there is no need to send it to us. If it is
  203.     of the kind which is not normally in university libraries but is
  204.     available in large bookshops, we can purchase it at your cost.
  205.     Otherwise, you can send it, but note that return shipping and
  206.     insurance (if required) will be at your cost.
  207.  
  208.     We WOULD normally expect to retain the copyright on the computerized
  209.     version of old books which are commonly available and out of copyright.
  210.     If you would like to retain copyright (for example on your own text,
  211.     or if it is a recent book for your private use and you have the
  212.     relevant permissions) the fees given under b) and d) above would
  213.     apply.
  214.  
  215.     You will receive a draft computer book, which will give you the
  216.     opportunity to note any corrections, changes in format, defaults,
  217.     and so on. A small amount of new material, too, may still be added
  218.     at this stage. Normal proof-reading will be done by us, and is
  219.     covered by the fees stated above.
  220.  
  221.     If you send the book to us (or ask us to purchase it on your behalf),
  222.     you should state whether you want it returned with the draft, or with
  223.     the final version.

  225.     Your corrections and changes to the draft will be incorporated in
  226.     the final computerized book, and then you will be sent the software
  227.     in the same format as the books in our current list, together with
  228.     three copies of the printed documentation. (Additional sets of
  229.     printed documentation may be purchased at the cost of $2 for
  230.     three copies.)
  231.  
  232.     We reserve the right to refuse unsuitable or unpleasant material.
  233.     Our fees are subject to a review every three months; the present
  234.     document is dated May 1993. You will receive a contract before
  235.     work starts. We appreciate your custom.
