  16. INTRODUCTION :

  18.     To make meteorological code learning easy, a software was developed 
  19.     at the "Ecole Nationale de la Météorologie", METEO-FRANCE. It aims 
  20.     to teach the METAR code which is to be implemented on the 1st July 
  21.     1993.
  22.     This computed assisted learning (CAL) module is designed at first 
  23.     for initial training. It may satisfy also other needs resulting from 
  24.     the 1993 METAR change.
  25.     This course will be distributed without cost in the french 
  26.     meteorological services, to aeronautic users and in the foreign 
  27.     national meteorological services through the World Meteorological 
  28.     Organisation.

  32. ENVIRONMENT REQUESTED FOR USE OF DIDACODE:

  34.     - a personal computer (IBM or compatible, with MS/DOS operating 
  35.     system) with a mouse (mandatory).
  36.     -  a VGA screen (color screen preferably). There is no compatibility 
  37.     with other graphic adaptors.
  38.     - CALMETAR.EXE (english version: "Computer Assisted Learning") used         either from the floppy disk or from the hard disk of 
  39.     the computer.

  43. LEARNING SESSION:
  44.  
  45.     Follow the guide in the course! Instructions are provided as and 
  46.     when required.
  47.  
  48.     After a short presentation, you get to the heart of the matter with 
  49.     the screen "METAR : Main Menu". Six chapters are proposed. The 
  50.     transition from a chapter to the next one is automatic. If you start 
  51.     at "Generalities", you can end up in "Exercises" without coming back 
  52.     to the main menu. Otherwise, it is possible to bypass some chapters.

  54.     Requests for actions with the mouse appear regularly on the screen. 
  55.     If you ask for help in any exercise, the cursor moves automatically 
  56.     to the correct answer without moving the mouse. You have to click 
  57.     this correct answer before going on.

  63.     You will find the four following files :
  64.     CALMETAR.EXE : english version of the course,
  65.     README       : present document,
  66.     TAFMET1.NEW  : WordPerfect METAR/TAF code card

  70. INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE :

  72.     To start the course, type :
  73.     CALMETAR + Return    (english version)

  77. IN CASE OF PROBLEM :
  78.  
  79.     Some possible problems are listed below with their probable origin 
  80.     and suggested solution:
  81.  
  82.     - impossible to read the floppy disk: check the operating system; 
  83.     if it is not MS/DOS, work with another PC.
  84.  
  85.     - impossible to start the course:       
  86.     if no mouse, install one and reinitialize the PC,
  87.     if no mouse driver, add the instruction "DEVICE = MOUSE.SYS" in the 
  88.     configuration file and reinitialize the PC.
  89.  
  90.     - interruption during a session: the available memory is not 
  91.     sufficient. This sofware does not need much memory space and there 
  92.     are probably other applications filling the memory (Windows, ...). 
  93.     Close enough of them.

  95.     - screen shows strange images (overlapping texts, traces remaining 
  96.     after object displacements, ...): the graphic adaptor is probably 
  97.     not VGA. Work with another PC.
