*** MERLIN development history *****
**USE THE INFO FEATURE WITHIN MERLIN FOR THE LATEST DOCUMENTATION**
1.5f - addition of "loop" feature for business sites that wish to put the
information provided by MERLIN in an "endless" loop to broadcast across
television monitors or to display to employees on a dedicated PC at a central
location.
1.5e - minor interface corrections/improvements based on suggestions by
users.
1.5d - reduction of shareware message in upper-left corner to 10% and add
random city selection to closing shareware screen.
1.5c - further tweaking of neural network.
1.5b - Bug fix to "unDo" feature to correctly revise storm file.
1.5a - Pre-release of 1993 version of MERLIN. New features for 1993 include:
* AUTOMATIC UPGRADE capability for all of 1993. Upgrades of the 1.5x series
will be kept in the IBM Applications Forum on CompuServe. Download any
1.5X series that is newer than your registered version and your MERLIN.COM
file sent with your registration diskette will suppress all SHAREWARE
messages for any 1.5x series upgrade. The latest version of MERLIN is also
kept in the Public software Library Catalog, 1-800-242-4PSL.
* A total of FOUR tracking maps, Alt+[A]tlantic, Alt+[E]ast coast, Alt+[G]ulf
of Mexico and the original MERLIN map accessed by pressing "M" from the
MERLIN Advisory.
* UNDO mistakes by choosing "unDo" from the MERLIN menu. This eliminates
editing the ASCII file with a text editor in most situations where in-
correct information was entered and saved from the Update storm screen.
* SPEED-TRAK, a "speed-up" feature that is used whenever a storm being drawn
is off-screen.
* National Hurricane Center forecasts can now be plotted on-screen if you
have access to NHC Marine Advisories. Press Alt+[U]pdate from the MERLIN
Advisory to bring up the alternate update screen which is where NHC
forecasts can be entered.
* A Gray color scheme has been added to the program along with new, button
style, pop-up boxes/menus.
* Neural Net processing dampened for improved performance.
* Support for LaserJet printing by pressing Alt+2 from any of the four tracking
maps after the map is finished drawing and tracking. Alt+1 is used for
printing to a dot-matrix printer. MERLIN has support for LPT1 only.
* * * * * * * * *
1.4i - error handling improved when duplicate date/time or duplicate
latitude/longitudes as previous entry are entered when updating storm.
1.4h - Bug fix to Update Storm menu item. After updating, it was necessary
to either re-load the current storm from MERLIN's menu after updating, or
exit the program and re-start MERLIN to have the correct MERLIN's OUTLOOK.
All other items on the advisory were OK.
1.4g - Tracking information is presented on-screen while MERLIN is plotting
the storm's coordinates on the tracking chart. Maintenance upgrade to the
neural network to include new storm data.
1.4f - Puerto Rico, Jamaica and smaller islands have been added to the
tracking chart. A laser jet printed manual is now sent with registration.
Also, the registered version of MERLIN now has nearly 100 tracking locations
included in the menu, and many of these are based on the "official" locations
normally used by the National Hurricane Center for watch/warning and landfall
possibility:

1.4e - A message in the MERLIN Advisory states when the tracking location is
in the NE quadrant of the storm when the storm is within 100 miles of the
tracking location. New opening screen based on an image sent to T. M. Parker
by J. K., a meteorologist and registered user of MERLIN. Minor changes to
interface.
1.4d - Review mode allows viewing/printing of previous MERLIN Advisories by
using the PgUp/PgDn key. 12 Hour Projections now calculated using RatIo
Tracking Algorithm (RITA). This mathematical model replaces all the
regression models used by earlier releases of MERLIN. Regression is an
excellent forecasting tool, but there were rare instances where the data
presented to MERLIN would cause problems. RITA uses ratios to create the
12 Hour Projection, and performs nearly as well as regression when the storm
is traveling straight. When the storm is turning, RITA significantly
outperforms regression. Overall, RITA's projection is superior to earlier
regression models.
1.4c - Significant improvement to the detail level of the tracking map. Also,
Five degree longitude increase in tracking map area (ie.more Atlantic Ocean).
1.4b - All the features of previous versions. Code revisions/optimizations.
MERLIN now will work with a maximum of 75 readings instead of 50. Credit card
orders now available thru 1-800 number - see ORDER.FRM file.
1.4a - All the features of previous versions. Code revisions that prevent
MERLIN from re-calculating if a menu is popped-down by pressing the Esc key.
More cities added. Now there are 36 locations instead of 23, and these are
easily modified by the user with any ASCII text editor.
1.40 - All the features of previous versions. This is the "official" version
of MERLIN for the 1992 hurricane season. MERLIN can print the tracking map to
any IBM/Epson compatible dot-matrix printer. Use ALT+1 (LPT1) or ALT+2 (LPT2).
MERLIN.DOC is now available on-line, simply by pressing a key from MERLIN's
menu. Removal of timed shareware delay when exiting program. The purpose of
the delay was to ensure adequate reading time for closing message. This is now
just a "press any key" delay. SPANISH LANGUAGE version of MERLIN 1.40 is now
available.
1.30 - All the features of previous versions. Graphical tracking capability
added, based on numerous requests by registered users (EGA/VGA color monitor
required). Storm intensity color coded. MERLIN's 12 Hour Projection is added
to the storm track automatically for a visual representation of MERLIN's
calculated projection of the most recent trend using the mathematical models.
1.20 - All the features of previous versions. MAJOR upgrade to mathematical
model. Now, includes curvi-linear regression routines. Previous versions had
only linear regression for mathematical model. MERLIN automatically chooses
best method and applies it to forecast based on trend. Free program offer to
registered users - 4CAST.EXE. This program uses a sub-set of the mathematical
models in MERLIN to work with ANY data sets.
1.10 - First major release to public. Uploaded to Compuserve and several
regional BBS systems (Houston/Miami areas). 1st use of artificial intelligence
and mathematical models to determine future location/strength of storm based on
recent trend. Text-based reports and history, viewed on-screen or sent to
printer.
1.00 - Early public release to limited user group. Basically the 1.0b version
after changes implemented, based on Beta team's suggestions.
1.0b - Beta version, used by Beta team to uncover errors in program
functionality. This version was not released to public.
