--- MERLIN Hurricane Tracking Tool Notes ---
HURRICANE PREDICTIONS FOR 1993 - The Houston Chronicle reports that William
Gray, a Colorado State University meteorologist, expects six hurricanes in the
Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico, three of them intense. Gray also believes
the 1993 season should be slightly more active than the 42 year average. His
forecast beginning June 1st calls for eleven named storms, six hurricanes and
25 hurricane days. Gray's forecast for 1992 called for four hurricanes, one
of which would be severe, and that is exactly what happened.
MORE PREDICTIONS... - Jill Hasling of the private Weather Research Center in
Houston expects eight named tropical storms in the Atlantic, six becoming
hurricanes. In 1992 there were six named storms, four of which became
hurricanes.
KUDOS FROM JIM SEYMOUR - We were thrilled to receive a letter from Jim Seymour
(PC Magazine/PC Week/PC Sources), stating... "I've been prowling around in
Compuserve lately, looking for interesting new shareware programs. Among the
few hundred I've worked with so far, MERLIN is near the top of my list of
personal favorites".
FREQUENCY BY MONTH... All hurricanes striking the U.S. coast this century:
DEC-MAY = 0 JUN = 11 JUL = 16 AUG = 37 SEP = 61 OCT = 23 NOV = 4
source: National Weather Service
DID YOU KNOW?... that SAFER EMERGENCY SYSTEMS, Inc., located in Los Angeles,
has added the MERLIN Hurricane Tracking Tool to their product line of emergency
response software for industrial customers. SAFER software specializes in
managing chemical emergencies.
DID YOU KNOW?... that the registered version of MERLIN has nearly 100 tracking
locations included in the menu, and that many of these are based on the
"official" locations normally used by the National Hurricane Center for
watch/warning and landfall possibility:
YOUR City Added Here! Brownsville TX Port Mansfield TX

DID YOU ALSO KNOW?... When you become a registered user of MERLIN that your
tracking location is added to the "What if..." menu before being shipped to
you, if it can be found in our source materials. This means that your location
is ALREADY a part of MERLIN when you receive it and load it on to your PC. The
location added to the MERLIN program is the city that it is being shipped to.
Many of the latitude/longitude readings used by MERLIN to calculate storm
information related to a tracking location is taken from the "Rand McNalley
GOODE'S WORLD ATLAS, 18th Edition". This is the only world atlas we were able
to locate, that contained so many geographical coordinate-pairs for city names
- 34,000! Other sources are available to us when this comprehensive tome comes
up short.
DID YOU KNOW?... MERLIN has FOUR tracking maps available at the press of a
key. Pressing "M" from the MERLIN Advisory screen brings up the original,
general view MERLIN map. Pressing Alt+[A] brings up the "zoomed-out" Atlantic
map, Alt+[G], the Gulf of Mexico and Alt+[E], the Eastern U.S. coastline.
RADIO/TELEVISION... During a hurricane watch/warning in your area, listen to
your radio or television constantly. ALWAYS have at least one battery operated
radio available. During severe weather, broadcasters will interrupt routine
programs to give special warning messages. For 24 hour weather information,
tune in the National Weather Service on inexpensive radios available at
electronic stores. The three frequencies used by the NWS are: 162.400mhz,
162.475mhz, and 162.550mhz. One of these frequencies may be active in your
area.
DID YOU KNOW?... that in the background, MERLIN uses mathematical models and
artificial intelligence techniques to attempt short-term forecasts (the ones
with the highest probability of success). Along with forecasts, MERLIN
provides EASY-TO-DO hurricane tracking in color on your PC's screen. MERLIN
Advisories provide TEXT reports that are easy to understand and the advisory is
AUTOMATICALLY created whenever you update MERLIN. Each MERLIN menu item is
activated by pressing a single key and then choosing from a menu in most cases.
Atlantic storm names for the 1993 season are: Arlene, Bret, Cindy, Dennis,
Emily, Floyd, Gert, Harvey, Irene, Jose, Katrina, Lenny, Maria, Nate, Ophelia,
Philippe, Rita, Stan, Tammy, Vince and Wilma.
DID YOU KNOW?... Hurricane season begins June 1st!
