What'sBest!
What'sBest! is a true spreadsheet Add-in that allows you to
automatically find solutions that maximize profit or minimize
cost in your spreadsheet models without the tedium of the
trial-and-error/"What if" approach typically used. What'sBest!
combines the power of linear and integer programming -- proven
optimization tools -- with spreadsheet software -- the most
popular tools for modeling business problems. Since 1985
What'sBest! has been used successfully for determining maximum
profit or minimum cost solutions to linear models in application
areas such as product distribution, product mix, production
planning, staff scheduling, and resource allocation.
Models can be quickly generated in a completely free format
exploiting all the power and flexibility of the spreadsheet
modeling environment. Setting up the model is as simple as ABC;
A) Specify the ADJUSTABLE cells (or decision variables) in your
model, B) designate the BEST cell (or objective function) to be
maximized or minimized, and C) indicate the CONSTRAINTS that must
be satisfied. What'sBest! does not demand rigid formatting of
spreadsheet models -- you are not required to lay out the data in
a "Simplex tableau". What'sBest! works directly with the
formulae in the spreadsheet model. During optimization,
What'sBest! manipulates the Adjustable Cells to find the solution
that yields the Best answer while satisfying all of the
constraints. What'sBest! is also capable of performing
sensitivity analysis on the best solution by returning "shadow
price" and "range" information to the spreadsheet. The current
adjustable cell values are also used as a "warm start" for
optimization, greatly reducing solution times on frequently
solved models.
What'sBest! uses the LINDO optimizer to solve your models. The
optimizer has been widely distributed and tested, and is
extremely robust. The LINDO optimizer is state of the art and
exploits the sparsity of large problems and minimizes round off
error through the use of the Revised Simplex Method with Product
Form Inverse.
What'sBest! is available in a variety of sizes to suit your
particular optimization needs from 400 to 16,000 variables.
What'sBest! supports Lotus 1-2-3 Rel. 2.X and 3.X, Symphony
Release 1.1 and above, and Quattro Pro 2.0 and will make use of a
math coprocessor, if present, to greatly speed solution times.
Versions are also available for Microsoft Excel on the Apple
Macintosh.
Why waste time using a trial-and-error approach when you can find
the best answer with a single keystroke using What'sBest!? For
