CQ Field Day....W1ND 2A EMA
This year Field Day will be a little different. The ARRL has
added another free station; VHF/UHF. This makes a total of three
possible free stations which we have decided to take full
advantage of. We will run as class 2A but don't let that make
you think this is going to be small.
The VHF/UHF station will be run on all mode radios so we can try
some SSB this time as well as the typical FM. This same station
will be used to make the satellite and solar contacts and will
probably run with horizontally polarized beams.
The Novice/Tech station will consist of an HF rig for use on 10
meters phone (lets hope the band is open) and CW on the other
Novice HF bands. We will also have VHF/UHF equipment setup at
this station just in case 10 meters is quiet and we can't find
any Novice or Tech CW operators. The HF antenna will probably be
an R5 vertical and for VHF we will have a couple of vertically
polarized beams.
Packet will be used again this year but will only be on VHF. We
will be using G3ZCZ's Lan-Link packet interface in contest mode.
We have a few ideas that could make this a very busy point
earning station.
The CW station will consist of an HF rig (thanks to Andy WD1Q),
a tri-band beam, a 40 and 80 meter dipole and of course a key.
There will probably be a bencher and a straight key with the
station but you are welcome to bring your own.
The phone station, which is the real point maker, will be the
same HF rig we used last year thanks to Eric WB1HBU. This
station will also have a beam but we might make it a 20 meter
mono-bander since this is where the station usually operates.
So as you can see, we will have 5 stations setup. We probably
wont have the interference between stations like we did last
year on HF and we are planning other things to make your
operating more enjoyable.... headset microphones are one of them.
Setup will begin on Friday June 25, at 2PM in which we assemble
and erect most of the antennas. Setup continues early Saturday
with the completion of station assembly and we're ready to go
'on the air'. The more people we have for setup, the less work
it is for each of us so come on down and lend a hand. Saturday
night is the big NSRA Field Day Barbecue for those that help
out, don't miss it!

LYNN CD GETS HELP FROM HAMS
Amateur Radio operators from the Lynn area stepped in to provide
emergency communications during the March 13 blizzard.
By 2:00 PM Saturday a complete communications network, totally
independent of commercial power and phone lines, was in place
and operational. This network provided a vital link between the
shelter at Breed Jr. High school, evacuation busses, National
Guard troops and the Emergency Management Command Center at
North Shore Community College. For a period of time, when normal
telephone lines were inoperable, Ham Radio was the only way to
get information to and from the shelter.
When Mayor Patrick McManus ordered an evacuation of the low
lying areas, Ham Radio operators assisted Lynn Fire Departments'
Lt. Robert Burke by going door to door delivering flyers to the
apartments on Beach Street and Surfside Road in an attempt to
notify the residents of the evacuation orders.
In the past, Ham Radio has shown to be a very reliable means of
emergency and public safety communications. The Tall Ships, the
Boston Marathon, the Newburyport GrandPrix and the Salem
Heritage Day Parade are only a few of the events that Hams have
participated in on a completely volunteer basis.
The Hams that assisted during this effort were: Ken Smith AA1DR,
Bob Nelson N1EUN, Mike Naselroad N1EVH, Jim Leavey N1FRD, Rick
Marsters N1OHW all from Lynn; Eric Austin KA1RCP and Fred
Anderson KA1RQN from Swampscott; and Dave Phillips N1OHN from
Saugus. Tony Lamoly KA1LCR from Lynn also assisted the
communication effort by providing a city wide cross band
repeater.
