THE
DIGITAL PUBLISHING ASSOCIATION
(Europe)
Newsletter 1.
################################################################################
INTRODUCTION:
The aim of the Digital Publishing Association (DPA) is very
simple; to be a forum for all persons and groups that take an
interest in Electronic publishing (EP); software programmers,
publishers, authors, readers, etc...
By EP we mean all activities that have something to do with
creating, distributing and using (reading) computerfiles
(text, image, video,...) that need to be viewed on a
computerscreen. So all output must be 'screen-oriented' and
be produced with an eventual print out, or real printing
whatsoever in mind.
We strive to popularise EP through all conceivable 'channels'
(BBSs, Newsletters, mail, etc...) as a unique medium with
its own characteristic advantages. This means, a.o., that we
are setting up a network of contact points that is open for
everyone who wishes to make use of it. For now, establishing
this network is our main concern. We know that a lot of
activity and initiatives are going on and that each for
himself seems to be 're-inventing the weel'.
WHAT DOES THE DPA (Europe) OFFER?
The DPA (Europe) is not a solitary endeavour. It is, for the
time being, a de facto association, directly linked with
DPA USA. We are member of the DPA USA and officially
represent them in Europe. To stress these ties we use the
same name. We are the DPA (USA)'s contact point in Europe
and serve as a 'gateway' from Europe towards the US, and
vice versa. All contacts go direct, through modems, to BBSs
affiliated with the DPA, and through international computer
networks such as CompuServe or GEnie.
We receive feedback from the US at least once a month,
related to the latest developments in EP, demo software,
programs, publications, etc... .
This constant supply of new information is a reason to become
a DPA (Europe) member!
The duties we are attributing to ourselves are basically very
simple: answer all specific questions, disregarding who comes
up with them. If possible we will introduce them to the parties
concerned, or experts. You do not need to be a member to have
your questions answered.
SPECIFIC: What can the DPA (Europe) already do for you?
We believe that being available is already one important
thing! In this way everyone interested in EP now has 'place
to go to': a place for making contacts with other (a writer
looking for a publisher, authors who want to distribute their
work by themselves, authoring program authors, etc...)
The possibility to make contacts multiplies the
opportunities. Just compare it with the situation in which
shareware programmers found themselves 5 or 6 years ago. In
fact it was only after the establishment of associations such
as the ASP that shareware became such a success. Coordinating
activities is one of the keys for success. No matter how good
your authoring software is, no matter how revolutionary your
E-mag, if you cannot get it into the market, the chances that
you throw in the towel soon rather than late are big.
Besides setting up an open network for everyone, we also
think of special services only available for DPA members.
E.g. Mailing Newsletters, software, magazines (for example if
files are to big to download at a reasonable price), search
for foreign software or publications, act as 'go-between'
(e.g. between an author an an electronic publisher abroad),
distribute member files, translation services, software
support, etc...
There are a lot of things we can do, and we will come back to
you with more details in our Newsletter 2.
The DPA (Europe) already acts as a 'counter' where you can
purchase software (so no need to worry about payments abroad,
bankscommissions, etc...). For several products we can
already offer you a discount!
MEMBERSHIP
IS FREE.
The only requirement is that you live in Europa and fill in
the annexed questionnaire and send it to one of the contact
points mentioned below.
Beware: as from 1994 you will have to pay to become a member.
In that way members in Europe as well as members in the US
and Canada will be able to enjoy the same benefits at the
same conditions.
