MS Works
Multimedia Edition
by Tony Curro
Microsoft Works has been around for some time. It is an integrated
package that combines word processing, database, spreadsheet and
even a dialer into one package. The one I reviewed was the
multimedia edition on CD-ROM. They also make a non-multimedia
floppy-based version.
Works is an excellent choice for the small business, or one on a
tight budget (which is quite a few in these times!). Of course many
others will find it useful as well. I was impressed with it.
Works supports Wizards, which has appeared in many MS products from
Access to MS Publisher and others. Wizards are simple ways to create
forms or other information simply by answering a few questions. For
example, I created one for Address Book. I was asked several
questions, and the book was created, in a database format, without
my having to enter field names. I was ready to start entering data
in seconds. For those who prefer, you can open a blank file, and
then create your own fields and other information. Wizards have sort
of a set format, but you can bypass them and do it your way. Other
Wizards include form letters and mailing labels. Both of these use
data from the address book.
Using the word processor was also simple and easy. You can create
templates for any of the applications. Split the windows so you can
see your document and, database or spreadsheet, side by side.
Highlight a phone number in any application, and have Works dial the
number for you. Need to know how many words are in a document? Works
will do a word count for you. It also has a spell checker and
thesaurus.
The tutorial and help are highlights of the program. Using the
multimedia edition, you listen to instructions and other information
through any compatible sound card and speakers. The program actually
talks to you. I found this feature very informative and easy to
follow.
Works also allows you to draw, create charts, and import text or
graphics from other formats. Overall, I was pleased with the
product, and recommend it to those who do not need the larger
individual packages. It is nice to click on one icon, and have all
your programs available to you. It also makes copying information
much simpler. For all this, and a street price, for the CD-ROM, of
around $140, you cannot go wrong. The CD-ROM version comes with
manual on disk. A hard copy of the manual can be had for $35 from
Microsoft, by filling out the card enclosed with the CD.
