$$$INTRODUCTION
Thank you for downloading this Automated Electronic Order Program
(AEOP). We are sure you will enjoy using this program to place
your scanning orders. TARDIS DP Consultants stands ready to
process your order and looks forward to doing business with you.
TARDIS DP Consultants has been providing custom programming and
other computer solutions for over 5 years. We are now providing
scanning solutions to you and our clients. This AEOP contains
all you need to know about our scanning services, and lets you
place your orders electronically.
Before we continue you need to know what computer hardware you
will need to take advantage of our scanning services.
* First, you must have an IBM PC DOS or compatible computer
with a hard drive. If you use another computer type you may
still be able to use our services. We will ship you the scanned
image on IBM DOS format. You are responsible for converting the
information to your computer. You must have access to an IBM DOS
computer (with hard drive) to initially load the diskettes.
* Second, if you intend to use the image for display you should
have a graphics card which can display 256 (or more) colors at
one time. This may be a Super VGA (SVGA) or better graphics
card, or the newer 24 bit color graphics cards. Although you can
still use our graphic scanning services, you won't be able to
clearly see the scan without this hardware.
* Third, if you want to use the shareware graphic enhancement
and conversion program Paint Shop Pro (provided with your
scanned image) you must also be running Windows 3.x.
* Forth, your mailing address must be in the 50 US states. We
currently do not ship to addresses outside the US.
IMPORTANT
Throughout these instructions we use the words "Photograph" and
"Picture" to refer to the original image you want us to scan. In
reality this image can be a picture (from a magazine, newspaper,
etc.), an actual photograph, a drawing, a company logo, a
signature, etc. Anything that can be laid flat can be scanned.
TARDIS DP Consultants does not perform Optical Character
Recognition (OCR) at this time.
Some items do not scan very well and may produce less than
acceptable results. Printed pictures in newspapers and magazines
(or halftones) may not scan well. Items which themselves are not
"clean" (i.e. crumpled, smudged, etc.) may show that damage when
scanned. Photographs of good quality, line art, drawings, and
company logos generally scan very well and should be of
exceptional quality.
Computer Scanning
Computers with the proper display hardware (see above) can
display graphics on the screen or print them on the printer. The
hardware to convert a picture to a scanned image can be quite
expensive and is out of reach of most computer users. There are,
however, more and more uses for these scanned graphics. They
include entertainment, desktop publishing, presentation graphics,
and multimedia presentations (just to name a few). With a
scanning service, you can take photographs or other printed
images and convert them to a computer graphic file. Once you
have the file, you can use it in any number of ways.
This is exactly what TARDIS DP Consultants does for you. We take
your photograph and scan it into our computers and create a
graphic file. We then copy this file to diskette, and send the
file and the unaltered original picture right back to you. You
can start using the scanned image immediately. We even provide
the shareware version of Paint Shop Pro with each order. This
Windows 3.x software allows you to crop the image to any area,
re-size, modify colors, lighten/darken, and convert it to other
graphic file formats. For more information about Paint Shop Pro,
see option "P".
Suggested Uses of Scanned Images
* Many of our customers scan employee pictures and use the
scanned image in the company newsletter to better identify the
author. It makes a real difference for your customers to see who
they are talking with in your company.
* This same company scans in employee pictures and company logo
and makes it part of the employee's windows wallpaper and/or
screen saver. When the computer it idle the computer user's
picture displays on the screen.
* Some clients are scanning their employees signatures. It
saves a lot of time not having to get the employee to sign their
letters. Instead the secretary simply inserts the signature
directly into the word processing document and it prints along
with the letter. Note: Signatures and other like art scans best
when it is Black ink on white paper.
* Scans make a great gift for your computer user to give them a
graphic file of their or a family/coworker's picture for their
computer screen. Some companies may want to take group pictures
of people in individual departments so each employee in the
department sees on their computer screen all the other employees
in their department.
* Other companies may want to take individual pictures of each
employee, make it part of an employee database. If you need to
call someone and can't remember their name, look through the
database until you see them, and up pops their name and phone
number.
* Some are using it as part of new employee orientation
multimedia presentations. They can see on the screen the
officers and managers of the company, etc.
* Other companies may scan technical specifications, drawings,
or pictures of equipment and incorporate these images as part of
an employee training/knowledge base for equipment repair.
* Still others scan in sections of city maps and use desktop
image editing software to map out the route from the airport to
the hotel and the office.
* The possibilities are almost endless. Remember, once you have
the scanned image you can change it any number of times and use
it in any number of ways. (Always save the diskette(s) the image
was shipped on in case you accidentally change the original.)
The Details and Cost
TARDIS DP Consultants has developed a standard picture scanning
order. This order should work well for most needs. There are
always those orders which require special options (discussed
later). The following is our standard scan order.
Standard Scan includes:
* Your diskette with your scanned image in uncompressed TIFF
format
* The original item which was scanned (no larger than 4" by 6"
in any axis)
* The shareware version of Paint Shop Pro (which you can use to
change the TIFF file to the format you need (see option "P'))
Standard Scans are performed at 300 dots per inch (dpi)
resolution, 256 colors, with no change in scale. This results in
an image which is perfect for SVGA hardware for use as windows
wallpaper, screen savers (like AfterDark), presentation graphics,
multimedia, etc.)
Standard Scan Cost $ 15.00
This scan cost is per picture/diskette. Please read on for
information about quantity discounts and the procedures for
submitting more than one picture in the same shipment.
Special Orders
Realizing that this standard scan won't meet everyone's needs the
AEOP will prompt you for additional options. These additional
options may add to the cost of your scan. These options are:
Oversize
If your item to be scanned in larger than 4" by 6" (in any axis -
width or height) then it is considered oversize and is subject to
the oversize scan cost. Scanned images may be no larger than 8
1/2" by 14" (in any axis). When scanning signatures, for
example, it will be cheaper to have everyone sign the same piece
of paper and scan the paper as one oversize scan (instead of
scanning many smaller pieces). You may then use Paint Shop Pro
to crop the individual signatures and make each one a separate
graphic file. This same approach, however, can be applied to
other items (drawings, company logos, etc.) as long as all the
items are on one piece of paper.
Oversize Cost (in addition to standard scan cost) $10.00
24 Bit true 16+ Million Color Image
With the newer graphic display hardware you may be able to show
more than 256 colors. This may apply to higher end multimedia
presentations or presentation graphics. We can provide true 24
bit scans (producing all the colors humans can see). This charge
includes any additional diskettes which may be required to ship
the scan to you. True 24 bit graphic files can be several
megabytes in size.
24 Bit Color Cost (in addition to standard scan cost) $15.00
Resolution
The standard scan is performed at 300 dots per inch (dpi). This
is suitable for most situations. If you need to reduce the
resolution (ex. so that the entire image fits on your monitor as
Windows wallpaper, you can use Paint Shop pro to scale the image
down after you receive it.) Some applications may require a
higher resolution. Resolutions between 1-300 are included in the
standard scan price. Resolutions higher than 300dpi are charged
at a higher cost. Just indicate what resolution you want (if
other than 300dpi). This resolution change includes any
additional diskettes which may be required to ship the scan to
you. Higher resolution graphic files can be several megabytes
in size.
Resolution greater than 300dpi (in addition to standard scan
cost) $15.00
Calculating the Order Cost
You need not worry about calculating the cost of your order
manually. The AEOP will do it for you. You simply respond to
the questions it ask you. Here is a sample order with some of
the options: You submit one picture to be scanned. It is 6" x
6" (oversized) and you want true 24 bit color. The charge for
the scan is $15 (standard) + $10 (oversize) + $15 (24 bit) =
$40.00. You would make the check for $40.00. Shipping is always
included in the standard scan charge.
Before you continue you should decide how the scanned image will
be used. The eventual uses of the graphic can often determine if
you need a higher resolution or 24 bit color. If you have doubts
then select 300dpi and 24 bit color. You can always reduce the
number of colors (even create a grayscale with Print Shop pro
(see option "P"). Remember, although the scanned image is sent
to you as a TIFF file, you can change the file format to many
others with Windows 3.x Paint Shop Pro. Also, Paint Shop Pro can
be used to convert color images to grayscale or line art when you
don't have a color printer or display. See option "P" for more
information about Paint Shop Pro.
$$$ORDERING
Ordering Instructions
You have selected the Order option. This option is used to place
a new order, check an existing order, or change an existing
order.
You will by prompted for several items of information necessary
to complete your order. Each field (area you enter information)
is presented one at a time. Once you press [Enter] on a field,
you may not immediately return to previous field to make any
changes. Once all fields on the screen have been completed you
are prompted to accept the information. If the information has
an error, you have the opportunity to return to each field and
make correction(s).
What is Electronic Ordering?
Electronic ordering in this fashion is relatively new. What you
are doing it entering your order information into your computer.
This information is stored on a floppy diskette and will be
shipped along with your picture. TARDIS DP Consultants computers
will read this ordering information from the floppy diskette.
This saves having to manually enter it in our computers and
reduces our cost. This is why we can provide our standard scan
at such a low price.
If you are submitting only one picture to be scanned, you can
follow the instructions as they are written. If, however, you
are submitting more than one item (in the same shipment) for
scanning, the following additional instructions apply (to avoid
any confusion when processing your order).
* Each picture to be scanned must be accompanied by an order
diskette. Each order diskette must contain all ordering
information (address and ordering options).
* To avoid confusion write the phrase "1 of 3", "2 of 3", etc.
on each diskette AND on the back of each picture so that we know
what order instructions are to be applied to what picture.
* Our scanning process will consider each diskette/picture as a
separate order. It is therefore important that you write down
each scan's Order Reference Number (see option "V").
* To save you time in entering your shipping address you may
copy the ADDRESS.TXT file from one completed diskette to any
others. Do NOT copy the SPECS.TXT file as this contains
information which must be unique for each scan.
Quantity Discounts
If you are submitting more than one picture in the same shipment,
you may be intitled to a quantity discount as follows:
Pictures/diskettes Discount off EACH picture
1-3 N/A
4+ $ 2
If, for example, you submitted 8 pictures for scanning, you would
subtract $2 for each of the 8 pictures, reducing your entire
order cost by $16. Remember, you must still submit one completed
order diskette with EACH picture.
You may make out one check for the entire order. Simply add up
each order price and make the check out for the total (less any
quantity discounts.) Since each scan is treated by the AEOP as a
separate order, it does not automatically calculate the quantity
discount.
$$$ORDERING_DISKETTE
If this is the first time you are placing an order (rather than
reviewing an existing order) you must have a blank - newly
formatted diskette in your floppy drive. If you are
checking/changing an existing order you should have the same
diskette used when you placed the order.
The diskette you should use must be of the following format,
size, and density. These are the only types of diskettes we can
accept. (Sorry, we can't use Double Density (DD) diskettes).
Format: IBM PC (or compatible)
Density: High (HD) (sorry, Double Density (DD) is not supported)
Size: 3 1/2" or 5 1/4"
Please make sure you have a diskette of the type specified
inserted in a floppy drive now.
$$$ORDERING_ADDRESS
You will now be prompted for the address you want the diskette
and original picture to be shipped to (both the picture and
diskette must ship to the same address). Shipping is via U.S.
mail (so we may ship to any address in the country).
Please enter the information requested. When you have completed
an entry at a field press [Enter] to move to the next field.
In addition to your address you are prompted for your day, night,
and fax phone. Although these fields are optional, we suggest
you supply the information so that if you have a question about
your order we can contact you.
You are next prompted for your CompuServe ID number. A preferred
method of contact is via CompuServe eMail. With your ID we can
send you an eMail message should we have a question about your
order.
The last option, special shipping instructions, permits you to
let us know of you have some special instructions when shipping
the diskette(s) back to you. We normally ship U.S. Mail, but
will try to follow your request where possible. The special
shipping instructions field scrolls. It may contain up to 250
characters. As you enter information the field scrolls to the
left. All the information is saved (even though you may only be
able to see the first 50 characters or so.)
Any field you do not want to enter information in you may skip by
pressing [Enter]. If the cursor does not move to the next field
then the current field is required. You must supply the
information requested before continuing. Note: The zip code is
required.
$$$ORDERING_SPECS
Let us review what you get with the standard scan before asking
you if you want any special options.
Standard Scan includes:
* Your diskette with your scanned image in uncompressed TIFF
format
* The original item which was scanned (no larger than 4" by 6"
in any axis)
* The shareware version of Paint Shop Pro (which you can use to
change the TIFF file to the formats you need (see option "P'))
Standard Scans are performed at 300 dots per inch (dpi)
resolution, 256 colors, with no change in scale. This results in
an image which is perfect for SVGA hardware for use as windows
wallpaper, screen savers (like AfterDark), presentation graphics,
multimedia, etc.)
**************** Standard Scan Cost $ 15.00
This scan cost is per picture/diskette.
We realize that this standard scan won't meet everyone's needs.
The AEOP will prompt you for additional options. Each of these
additional options may add to the cost of your scan.
$$$ORDERING_OVERSIZE
An oversized item is any item which is larger than 4" by 6" (in
any axis - width or height). These larger pictures require
additional scan time, diskettes, and shipping charges. Most
standard pictures are 3" X 5" or 4" x 6" and are not oversized.
If you have any questions about your picture please measure it.
The scan charge for oversize items is $10.00 in addition to the
standard scan charge.
$$$ORDERING_BIT24
With the newer graphic display hardware you may be able to show
more than 256 colors. This may apply to higher end multimedia
presentations or presentation graphics. We can provide true 24
bit scans (producing all the colors humans can see). This charge
includes any additional diskettes which may be required to ship
the scan to you. True 24 bit graphic files can be several
megabytes in size.
The scan charge for 24 bit true color is $15.00 in addition to
the standard scan charge.
$$$ORDERING_RESOLUTION
The standard scan is performed at 300 dots per inch (dpi). This
is suitable for most situations. If you need to reduce the
resolution (ex. so that the entire image fits on your monitor as
Windows wallpaper, you can use Paint Shop pro to scale the image
down after you receive it.)
Some situations may need a higher resolution. Resolutions
between 1-300 are included in the standard scan price.
Resolutions higher than 300dpi are charged at a higher cost.
This resolution change includes any additional diskettes which
may be required to ship the scan to you. Higher resolution
graphic files can be several megabytes in size.
The scan charge for a resolution higher than 300 is $15.00 in
addition to the standard scan charge.
$$$ORDERING_DESCRIPTION
In the field below please enter a description of the item you
want to scan. You have up to 250 characters in which to enter
your description. Please be as specific as possible.
If you have written a description on the back of the item please
include the description here.
$$$ORDERING_SCAN
There may be special needs which are not covered specifically in
this AEOP. You may indicate any special scanning needs on the
next screen. We will make every attempt to meet your needs. If
we find that Paint Shop Pro (supplied with your scanned image
(see option "P")) will convert the image to meet your needs we
will indicate such when the diskettes are returned. If we find
that the time, diskettes or shipping cost exceed the payment
enclosed we will contact you and let you decide what you want to
do.
The special scanning instructions is a scrolling field. It may
contain up to 250 characters. As you enter information the field
scrolls to the left. All the information is saved (even though
you may only be able to see the first 50 characters or so.)
$$$ORDERING_COST
The total cost of your order and scanning options appear on the
next screen. In addition, a unique Order Reference Number
appears in gray. Please write this number down. You will need
this number when inquiring about an order, and if we should need
to contact you we will reference this order number. If you are
sending in multiple diskettes/pictures this number is unique for
each one, so write it down for each scan diskette.
Please see the shipping information (option "S") for instruction
on payment method and shipping address.
$$$ORDERING_NOCOST
It appears you have not yet completed your order or this AEOP has
expired.. Information is missing from the diskette. Please
re-select the "O" (Place/Change Order) option and enter the order
information.
If you are sure you have placed your order, please make sure the
diskette is not write protected or damaged, and that it is the
same diskette you originally used to place your order.

$$$PRINTSHOP
TARDIS DP Consultants ships your scanned image in uncompressed
TIFF format. Knowing this may not be the format you need, we
also supply the shareware version of Print Shop Pro. Print Shop
Pro is a Windows 3.x program which allows you to manipulate the
graphic image we send you (and many other graphic images). The
shareware version entitles you to use the program for 30 days.
If you want to continue using it after that time you must license
it from JASC (the company who wrote it). Additional information
about the program and how to license it are included with your
scanned image.
Most of the information below is provided by JASC, the creators
of Print Shop Pro.
Technical support for Paint Shop Pro can be obtained from:

PAINT SHOP PRO
Version 1.02
Paint Shop Pro is a Windows program that will display, convert,
alter and print images. In addition, it is a screen capture
utility. It supports the file formats; BMP, DIB, GIF, IMG, JAS,
MAC, MSP, PIC, PCX, RAS, RLE, TGA, TIFF, and WPG. Paint Shop Pro
displays images in many ways, including zooming in and out.
Altering the image includes rotating, resizing, resampling,
trimming, filter application, color adjustments, brightness and
contrast adjusting, increasing and decreasing the color depth,
gamma correcting, and greyscaling. Paint Shop Pro comes with a
standard set of filters. It also supports applying, creating,
editing, and deleting user defined filters. Decreasing color
depth can be done using a standard palette or optimized palette.
The scanning fee paid to TARDIS DP Consultants to receive the
scanned image and to acquire Paint Shop Pro does not relieve the
recipient from purchasing the Licensed Version of Paint Shop Pro
if the recipient continues to use Paint Shop Pro beyond the 30
day trial period.
Definition of Shareware
Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software
before buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue
using it, you are expected to register. Individual programs
differ on details -- some request registration while others
require it, some specify a maximum trial period. With
registration, you get anything from the simple right to continue
using the software to an updated program and a printed manual.
Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and retail software, and
the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific
exceptions as stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished
programmers, just like retail authors, and the programs are of
comparable quality. (In both cases, there are good programs and
bad ones!) The main difference is in the method of distribution.
The author specifically grants the right to copy and distribute
the software, either to all and sundry or to a specific group.
For example, some authors require written permission before a
commercial disk vendor may copy their Shareware.
Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You
should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook,
whether it's retail or Shareware. The Shareware system makes
fitting your needs easier, because you can try before you buy.
And because the overhead is lower, prices are lower also.
Shareware has the ultimate money-back guarantee -- if you don't
use the product, you don't pay for it.
Purchasing the Licensed Version
You may use the shareware version of Paint Shop Pro for a 30 day
trial period. If you would like to continue to use Paint Shop Pro
after the 30 day trial period, you are required to purchase the
licensed version of Paint Shop Pro.
At the time of this writing the license fee for Print Shop Pro is
$49.00 + shipping.
When you purchase the licensed version of Paint Shop Pro you will
receive a disk with the licensed version and the printed user's
guide. Paint Shop Pro may be purchased from a number of sources.
You are free to purchase your copy from where ever you desire.
You may also want to check with your local software store to see
if they carry Paint Shop Pro.
TARDIS DP Consultants does not sell the licensed version of Paint
Shop Pro. Additional information will be sent along with your
scanned image about where to purchase Paint Shop Pro should you
decide to use it beyond the 30 day trial period.
$$$EXPIRE
We are sorry, but this version of the order program appears to
have expired. Please make sure your computer's system date is
correct. If not, please change it before placing your order.
If your computer's date is correct and you downloaded this
program some time ago, you should download an updated copy from
CompuServe or the same BBS you downloaded this program from.
When searching CompuServe for the update program search on the
words "TARDIS" and "SCAN".
If the program was downloaded recently, please send an eMail
message to CompuServe ID 73337,2472 to find out where you can
download an updated program.
We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.
This program will continue to the main menu so you can read the
descriptions of our scanning services, but the program will not
create the order diskette (which is required to place an order).
Thank you for your understanding.
