  2.                           Introduction
  3.  
  4. The Font Off program helps you maintain your Windows TrueType
  5. fonts.  If you are like a lot of people you have accumulated
  6. several hundred true type fonts.  "I never know when I am going
  7. to need them".  They are taking up a lot of valuable hard drive
  8. space and slowing down Windows.  You may be using one of the
  9. common font manager programs to remove the font from Windows (so
  10. Windows is not so slow).  Although these programs remove the font
  11. from Windows they leave the font's file(s) in the hard drive -
  12. still taking up space but not being useful.
  13.  
  14. Font Off works differently.  In addition to removing the font
  15. from Windows, Font Off removes the font from your Windows System
  16. directory and stores it in another directory.  Since this
  17. directory can be on any DOS drive media, you can move the fonts
  18. to another hard drive (or network drive), floppies or other
  19. removable media.  When you  need the font you simply reverse the
  20. process and reinstall it to Windows.
  21.  
  22. Font Off will not install new fonts to windows, it only maintains
  23. your existing fonts.  You must therefore use the font installer
  24. that often comes with new fonts, or use the Windows font manager
  25. to install new fonts.  Once the font is installed in Windows you
  26. can use Font Off to move it off line until it is needed.
  27.  
  28.                          Using Font Off
  29.    1.If this is the first time using Font Off you should create a
  30.      directory somewhere to store your off-line fonts.  It is
  31.      best to use a removable media (such as floppies, removable
  32.      hard drive, rewritable CD, etc.)  You will tell Font Off
  33.      where the directory is in the next step.
  34.    2.Just double click on Font Off's icon in Program Manager. 
  35.      You are first prompted for a directory where you want to
  36.      store (or have stored) off line fonts.  Use the drive and
  37.      directory boxes to select the directory you want to use.
  38.    3.If you are creating a new storage location for off line
  39.      fonts click on the "New" button.  If you wish to examine or
  40.      retrieve fonts from an existing off line storage directory
  41.      click the "Open" button.
  42.    4.The main Font Off window appears.  On the left is a list of
  43.      all fonts currently stored off line.  Windows does not have
  44.      direct access to these fonts.  On the right is a list all
  45.      fonts currently defined in the WIN.INI file.  These are the
  46.      fonts Windows currently has access to.
  47.    5.Simply select one or more fonts from the off line column
  48.      that you want to install in windows.  You can also select
  49.      one or more fonts from the right column that you want to
  50.      remove from windows and store in the current off line
  51.      directory.
  52.    6.When you have selected at least one font click the "Process"
  53.      button.  The program will automatically install any selected
  54.      off line fonts AND remove any selected Windows fonts.  This
  55.      process may take a while depending on the number and size of
  56.      the fonts selected.
  57.    7.When complete you may return to windows.  Any newly
  58.      installed fonts are immediately available.  Any un-installed
  59.      fonts are not longer present in the Windows environment.
  60.  
  61.                            Precautions
  62.      * If a program was running while you were installing fonts,
  63.        the program may not know about the new fonts.  Exit the
  64.        program and restart it.
  65.      * If a program was running while you were removing fonts,
  66.        the program may not know you have removed a font.  If you
  67.        try to use the fonts unpredictable results may occur.
  68.      * The WIN.INI file is automatically updated by Font Off. 
  69.        The next time you start windows you will have access to
  70.        the correct fonts.
  71.      * The True Type font must have a matching .FOT file in order
  72.        for Font Off to work properly.  Some font managers do not
  73.        properly maintain the FOT file (Font Off does).  If you
  74.        receive errors when removing a font it is probably because
  75.        the FOT file is not present.  Use Font Off to restore the
  76.        font to Windows and then use the Windows Font Manager to
  77.        reinstall the font again.  You can then safely remove it
  78.        with Font Off.
  79.      * Font Off does not currently check for available disk space
  80.        when removing or installing fonts.  Please make sure you
  81.        have enough disk space.  If the process fails a font may
  82.        be lost.
  83.      * Font Off will not copy a font file (FOT or TTF) if the
  84.        same file already exist in the target directory.  This
  85.        saves time as the system will not bother copying over an
  86.        existing off line font if you are removing a font you have
  87.        previously saved.  If you need to update an existing
  88.        font's file you should install the new font using Windows
  89.        Font Manager, delete the FOT and TTF files from the off
  90.        line storage directory, and remove the font using Font
  91.        Off.
  92.      * We recommend that you back up the Windows system and off
  93.        line font storage directory regularly.
  94.      * The Font Off program uses the Windows INI file conventions
  95.        for storing information about off line files (and when
  96.        updating WIN.INI).  These INI files are limited to 64K. 
  97.        You therefore have a limit on the number of fonts you can
  98.        store in the same off line storage location (or have
  99.        installed in Windows at any one time).  This limit is
  100.        based only on the INI information which must be
  101.        maintained, not the size of the font files themselves.
  102.      * The Font Off program will only store fonts in a
  103.        subdirectory.  You can not store fonts off line in the
  104.        root directory.

  107.                 License/Registration Fee: $15.00
  108.                           Registration
  109. If informational reminder screens appear when you start or exit
  110. the program you are using an unregistered version of the product.
  111. You have a 15 day evaluation period in which to try out the
  112. package.  If you use it longer than 15 days you must
  113. license/register it.  The reminder screens will not appear once
  114. you have registered the software. The un-registered version is
  115. also limited to storing only 50 off-line fonts in a single
  116. directory.  This limitation is removed when you register.
  117.  
  118. To register simply follow the instructions below:
  119.  
  120.    1.Install the software per the instructions that follow.
  121.    2.Run the software.  You are prompted for some information
  122.      (company name, your name, day phone number, and CIS ID
  123.      (optional).
  124.    3.When the opening window displays, click once on the "Note"
  125.      icon.  This displays the about window.
  126.    4.Write down on your check or money order your registration
  127.      number as is appears on the About window.  Make sure it is
  128.      accurate.  Your Activation Key is based on this number.
  129.    5.If you are a member of CompuServe also write your CompuServe
  130.      ID (NOT password) on the payment.  The activation key will
  131.      be sent to you via CompuServe eMail.  If you are not a
  132.      member of CompuServe your activation key will be mailed to
  133.      you.
  134.    6.Mail your check for the license fee listed above to the
  135.      address below.  Make the check payable to Charles Cranford.
  136.    7.When you receive your activation key, start the software and
  137.      again click on the "Note" icon.  The about window displays.
  138.    8.Click on the Register button.  A window appears with your
  139.      registration information and you are prompted for your
  140.      activation key.
  141.    9.Enter the key in the box, double check it, and click on OK. 
  142.      If the key is correct the system will be registered.  The
  143.      program will exit.  Simply restart the program to continue
  144.      using it.  The reminder screens will never appear again.
  145. The registration information is stored in a file with the .REG
  146. extention.  Do not delete this file (as you must again register
  147. the software).  Future updates will not affect this file so you
  148. may install them without worrying about your registration.

  161.                     Hardware/Software Tested
  162. The program has been tested and operated normally in the
  163. following environment::
  164.      386/486 PC
  165.      Windows 3.1 in Enhanced Mode (should also work in Standard
  166. Mode)
  167.      8, or 16MB of total memory (should also work in as little as
  168. 4MB)
  169.      DOS 5.0
  170.      VGA (256 colors) and VGA (32,000 colors) (Should also work
  171. in VGA 16 Color)
  172.      Serial and Bus Mouse (a mouse is recommended but not
  173. required)
  174.  
  175. Font Off should operate normally in any Windows 3.1 environment
  176. as long as Windows is operating in Standard or Enhanced mode. 
  177. Enhanced mode and VGA (or better) recommended.  Your hardware
  178. must of course be 100% windows compatible.
  179.  
  180. If the diskette or self extracting EXE file did not contain
  181. VBRUN300.DLL you should download it from a BBS or from
  182. CompuServe.  This file can always be found on CompuServe in the
  183. Microsoft Visual Basic forum.  GO MSBASI.

  185.                       Initial Installation
  186.  
  187. The program is provided as a self-extracting executable file. 
  188. Just follow the instructions below to install the program on your
  189. hard drive.
  190.  
  191.    1.Choose a drive/volume and directory on which you want to
  192.      install the product.  If the directory does not exist you
  193.      must create it now.
  194.    2.Copy the Font Off self extracting executable (FOFF.EXE) into
  195.      the directory.
  196.    3.Make a backup of this file to floppy diskette for safe
  197.      keeping.  You will delete this file later.
  198.    4.Change to the directory.
  199.    5.Type the command FOFF.  This uncompresses the files into the
  200.      current directory.
  201.    6.Delete the file FOFF.EXE.  It is no longer used.  Make sure
  202.      you make a backup per step 5 above.
  203.    7.Create a Program Manager icon for the program and link it to
  204.      the EXE file FONTOFF.EXE.
  205.    8.Installation is complete.  You may now double click on the
  206.      icon to start the program.

  208. Software License Agreement
  209.  
  210. Font Off is not and never has been public domain software, nor is
  211. it free software.  You are, however, granted 15 day evaluation
  212. period to try out the system.
  213.  
  214. The software product and user's manual are copyrighted and all
  215. rights are reserved by TARDIS DP Consultants and Charles L.
  216. Cranford IV.
  217.  
  218. Evaluation users are granted a limited license to use Font Off
  219. for no more than 15 days for the purpose of determining whether
  220. Font Off is suitable for their needs. The use of Font Off for
  221. more than 15 days  requires licensing and the payment of a
  222. license fee. The use of the product for more than 15 days by any
  223. person, business, corporation, government agency, or any other
  224. entity without licensing it from TARDIS DP Consultants is
  225. strictly prohibited.
  226.  
  227. A license permits a user to use Font Off on any single computer,
  228. or, in a LAN environment, on one workstation.  The software may
  229. not be installed on more than one workstation or single user
  230. computer without additional licenses.
  231.  
  232. No one may modify or patch the Font Off files in any way,
  233. including but not limited to decompiling, disassembling, or
  234. otherwise reverse engineering the program.
  235.  
  236. A limited license is granted to copy and distribute Font Off for
  237. the trial use of others, subject to the above limitations, and to
  238. those below:
  239.  
  240.      (1) Font Off must be copied in unmodified form, complete
  241.      with the file containing this license information and all
  242.      documentation.
  243.      
  244.      (2) Font Off may not be distributed in licensed form to any
  245.      person.  It MUST be distributed as an unlicensed copy.
  246.      
  247.      (3) No fee, charge, or other compensation may be requested
  248.      or accepted for distributing Font Off, except as follows:
  249.      
  250.       (a) operators of electronic bulletin board systems may
  251.       make Font Off available for downloading. A time-dependent
  252.       charge for the use of the bulletin board is permitted so
  253.       long as there is no specific charge for the download of
  254.       any Font Off files.
  255.       
  256.       (b) vendors of Shareware may distribute Font Off, subject
  257.       to the above conditions, and may charge a disk duplication
  258.       and handling fee, not to exceed ten dollars.
  259.  
  260. Limited Warranty
  261.  
  262. TARDIS DP Consultants guarantees your satisfaction with this
  263. product for a period of thirty days from the date of original
  264. license. If you are dissatisfied with Font Off within that time
  265. period, return the package in salable condition to TARDIS DP
  266. Consultants for a full refund. 
  267.  
  268. TARDIS DP Consultants warrants that all disks provided are free
  269. from defects in material and workmanship, assuming normal use,
  270. for a period of thirty days from the date of purchase.
  271.  
  272. TARDIS DP Consultants warrants that Font Off will perform in
  273. substantial compliance with the documentation supplied with the
  274. software product. If a significant defect in the product is
  275. found, the Purchaser may return the product for a refund. In no
  276. event will such a refund exceed the license price of the product.
  277.  
  278. The product and all updates are provided on an "as is" basis
  279. without warranty of any kind, express or implied, except as
  280. stated above including, but not limited to the implied warranties
  281. of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose. The
  282. entire risk as to the selection, quality, results, and
  283. performance of the product is with the Licensee. Should the
  284. product prove defective, then the Licensee (and not TARDIS DP
  285. Consultants or its dealers) assumes all liability and expense
  286. incurred as a result thereof. Some jurisdictions do not allow the
  287. exclusion of certain implied warranties so in such jurisdictions,
  288. the above exclusion of implied warranties may not apply to you.
  289. The limited warranty gives you specific legal rights. You may
  290. also have other rights which vary from jurisdiction to
  291. jurisdiction.

  293. TARDIS DP Consultants shall have no liability or responsibility
  294. to you or to any other person or entity with respect to any
  295. liability, loss or damage caused or alleged to be caused directly
  296. or indirectly by the product or your use, misuse or inability to
  297. use the product, including but not limited to, any interruption
  298. of service, loss of business, anticipatory or actual profits or
  299. consequential damages resulting from the use, misuse or inability
  300. to use the product.

  302. TARDIS DP Consultants does not warrant that the functions
  303. contained in the product or updates will meet your requirements.
  304.  
  305. Use of this product for any period of time constitutes your
  306. acceptance of this agreement and subjects you to its contents.
