INTRODUCING THE IBM TOKEN-RING 16/4 CREDIT CARD ADAPTER
_______________________________________________________
The IBM Token-Ring 16/4 Credit Card Adapter (Credit Card Adapter) is a
credit-card-sized adapter that provides an interface between computer systems
and token-ring networks. The Credit Card Adapter is designed to operate in
computer systems with card slots that comply with the standards of Personal
Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA) Release 2.0, Type II
slots.
Compliance with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)
802.5 standards allows the Credit Card Adapter to be managed with network
management tools such as the IBM Local Area Network (LAN) Support Program.
The Credit Card Adapter uses the following computer system software programs
and PCMCIA services to operate:
REQUIRED SYSTEM SOFTWARE
o IBM* or Microsoft** Disk Operating System (DOS) Version 5.0 (or higher)
OR
IBM Operating System/2* (OS/2*) Version 2.1 (with Card Services 2.0)
o IBM or Novell** token-ring network operating system software
SUPPORTED PCMCIA ENVIRONMENTS
o PCMCIA Card Services Version 2.0
o IBM-provided connectivity enablers for DOS (provided with this Credit
Card Adapter)
The IBM-provided connectivity enablers are used if your computer system
does not support Card Services. The installation program determines your
operating environment and, if required, prompts you to select the
appropriate enabler software.
CREDIT CARD ADAPTER KIT CONTENTS

In addition to this manual, your kit contains the following items:
o IBM Token-Ring 16/4 Credit Card Adapter (also described as adapter)

The sleeve is provided to store the adapter and keep it clean.
o Product warranty and registration card

You will find the product warranty on a separate card. Keep it for your
records.
o Token-Ring Credit Card Cable
The Token-Ring Credit Card Cable, which attaches to the Credit Card
Adapter and the network cable, can be ordered separately. If you want an
additional cable, contact your IBM marketing representative or your place
of purchase.
o IBM Token-Ring 16/4 Credit Card Adapter diskette Version 1.2 (3-1/2 inch)
If your Credit Card Adapter installation diskette is damaged, in the
United States and Canada, you can call the IBM Personal Computer Company
Bulletin Board System (BBS) at (404) 835-6600. You can download a copy
of the diskette from the BBS by using a modem. Outside of the United
States or Canada, contact your IBM marketing representative.
The diskette includes the following files:
FILE NAME DESCRIPTION
READ.ME The READ.ME file contains important, supplemental,
technical information about how to configure your computer
system, configure your Credit Card Adapter, and how to set
the ring speed and other parameters.
INSTALL.EXE The installation program loads a device driver and a
connectivity enabler if needed. It gives you the option of
choosing the driver that is compatible with your network
operating system.
xxxxx.SYS A connectivity enabler for DOS without Card Services 2.0.

driver for DOS.
IBMTOKCS.OS2 NDIS device driver for OS/2.
TOKEN.COM An Open Data-Link Interface (ODI) device driver for
Novell** NetWare** network operating software for DOS.
ODI2NDI.OS2 IBM NetWare Requester support device driver for OS/2.

TRCCTEST.BAT The Adapter Diagnostics program for DOS that is used to
test the Credit Card Adapter and the network link.
The Ring Diagnostics program (a part of the Adapter
Diagnostics program) provides status information and data
messages for the ring and for the adapters on the token
ring if a problem occurs. You may not need this program,
but it is included on the diskette if you want to run
diagnostics on the ring.
PREPARING FOR INSTALLATION WITH DOS
___________________________________
To install the Credit Card Adapter, you need the Credit Card Adapter diskette
and the following items:
o A computer system with a PCMCIA Release 2.0, Type II card slot
o IBM PC-DOS or Microsoft** MS-DOS** Version 5.0 (or higher), installed
NOTE: The Adapter Diagnostics program for the Credit Card Adapter
requires the computer system to be configured with the ANSI.SYS file.
Specify the ANSI.SYS option when you load DOS.
When the ANSI.SYS is configured with DOS, a statement similar to
"device=ansi.sys" will be added to your CONFIG.SYS file.
o PCMCIA Card Services Version 2.0 and PCMCIA Socket Services Version 2.0
if you want to use the card services or socket services programming
interfaces
o Resource Map Utility, which is included with your computer system's
reference diskettes, installed
o One of the following token-ring network operating system software
programs:
- IBM LAN Support Program, Version 1.3 (or higher)
- Novell NetWare, Version 3.11 (or higher)

PREPARING FOR INSTALLATION WITH OS/2
____________________________________
To install the Credit Card Adapter, you need the Credit Card Adapter diskette
and the following items:
o A computer system with a PCMCIA Release 2.0, Type II card slot
o IBM OS/2 Version 2.1, installed with PCMCIA Card Services Version 2.0.
(Card Services Version 2.0 is included with OS/2 Version 2.1)
o PCMCIA Socket Services Version 2.0 (for OS/2) and Resource Map Utility
(for OS/2, which is included with your computer system's reference
diskettes), installed
o One of the following token-ring network software programs:
- Network Transport Services/2 (NTS/2), which includes the LAN adapter
and protocol support (LAPS)
- Any of the following programs, which contain the LAN adapter and
protocol support (LAPS): OS/2 Extended Services* 1.0, LAN Server 2.0,
LAN Server 3.0, or TCP/IP for OS/2
- Novell NetWare Requester for OS/2

Before installing the Credit Card Adapter, be sure that the software listed
in "Preparing for Installation with DOS" on page 11 or "Preparing for
Installation with OS/2" on page 12 has been installed.
WARNING: BE SURE TO SELECT THE CORRECT RING SPEED. IF THE WRONG RING SPEED
IS SPECIFIED, COMMUNICATIONS ON THE RING MAY BE DISRUPTED. SEE YOUR SYSTEM
ADMINISTRATOR FOR MORE INFORMATION.
O WHEN USING THE DOS OPERATING SYSTEM, FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS IN THE
INSTALLATION PROGRAM TO SET THE RING SPEED.
O WHEN USING THE OS/2 OPERATING SYSTEM, SET THE RING SPEED FROM WITHIN THE
LAPS CONFIGURATION PROGRAM.
The READ.ME file on the diskette contains information to help you configure
and customize the adapter memory, I/O, interrupts, and other parameters for
your computer system. Most users can use the default parameters that are
provided by the Credit Card Adapter installation program.
INSTALLATION ENVIRONMENTS
The Credit Card Adapter can be installed on computers that have various
combinations of operating systems and network operating programs. The
procedures in this section contain the recommended sequence of installation
steps that you should follow when installing the various network operating
programs in combination with DOS or OS/2. (See "DOS Installation Overview"
or "OS/2 Installation Overview" on page 16 for the installation procedures.)
DOS INSTALLATION OVERVIEW
_________________________
The DOS-compatible installation environments are described in this section.
Use the installation procedures in one of the following sections to perform
the steps necessary for a successful installation.
When installing the Credit Card Adapter on a computer with DOS installed, you
have the options to use:

o Native mode (see "Overview - Installation with IBM LAN Support Program in
Native Mode (for DOS)" on page 14) - The Native mode enables some
improved performance and also uses less computer memory
o NDIS drivers (see to "Overview - Installation with IBM LAN Support
Program (and NDIS) (for DOS)")
o Novell NetWare (see "Overview - Installation with Novell NetWare (for
DOS)" on page 15)
OVERVIEW - INSTALLATION WITH IBM LAN SUPPORT PROGRAM IN NATIVE MODE (FOR DOS)
Perform the following installation steps for the Credit Card Adapter when
using DOS and the IBM LAN Support Program environment in Native mode:
1. Run the installation aid that is included with the IBM LAN Support
Program (LSP).
NOTES:
a. During the LSP installation process, indicate that you do not have an
adapter option diskette, and that you require IEEE 802.2 support.
b. While running the LSP installation aid, when you are prompted to
select a driver, select the IBM Token-Ring Adapter driver
(DXMC0MOD.SYS).
2. Install the Credit Card Adapter software using the installation
procedures in "Installing the Credit Card Adapter Software" on page 20.
During the installation procedures, select the option for the NDIS/LSP
environment.
3. Install the adapter using the instructions in "Installing the Credit Card
Adapter" on page 23.
4. Install the network workstation operating system software (for example,
DOS LAN Requester or PC LAN Program) using the installation procedures
that are supplied with the programs.
5. If any error messages are displayed after you have installed the Credit
Card Adapter in the previous step, see "Running the Credit Card Adapter
Diagnostics Program" on page 25 to help resolve the errors.
OVERVIEW - INSTALLATION WITH IBM LAN SUPPORT PROGRAM (AND NDIS) (FOR DOS)
Perform the following installation steps for the Credit Card Adapter when
using DOS and the IBM LAN Support Program (LSP) environment with NDIS
drivers:
1. Run the installation aid that is included with the IBM LSP.

NOTES:
a. During the LSP installation process, indicate that you have an
adapter option diskette.
b. Make a note of the LSP installation directory name. You will need
the directory name when you perform the installation procedures that
are referred to in step 2 on page 15.
c. While running the LSP installation aid, when you are prompted for the
option diskette, insert the IBM Token-Ring 16/4 Credit Card Adapter
diskette to load the IBM-supplied NDIS driver.
2. Install the Credit Card Adapter software using the installation
procedures in "Installing the Credit Card Adapter Software" on page 20.
During the installation procedures, select the option for the NDIS/IBM
LSP environment for DOS.
3. Install the adapter using the instructions in "Installing the Credit Card
Adapter" on page 23.
4. Install the network workstation operating system software (for example,
DOS LAN Requester or PC LAN Program) using the installation procedures
that are supplied with the programs.
5. If any error messages are displayed after you have installed the Credit
Card Adapter in the previous step, see to "Running the Credit Card
Adapter Diagnostics Program" on page 25 to help resolve the errors.
OVERVIEW - INSTALLATION WITH NOVELL NETWARE (FOR DOS)
Perform the following installation steps for the Credit Card Adapter when
using DOS and the Novell NetWare environment.
1. Use either the Novell NetWare instructions or workstation copy commands
to copy the NetWare files to your computer system's disk drive. The
following Novell NetWare files must be copied from the NetWare
installation diskettes to your computer system:
o LSL.COM, IPXODI.COM, and NETX.COM
NOTE: Make a note of the directory name to which the NetWare files are
copied. You will need the directory name when you perform the
installation procedures that are referred to in step 2.
2. Install the Credit Card Adapter software using the installation
procedures in "Installing the Credit Card Adapter Software" on page 20.
During the installation procedures, select the option for the Novell
NetWare environment for DOS.
3. Install the adapter using the instructions in "Installing the Credit Card
Adapter" on page 23.

4. If any error messages are displayed after you have installed the Credit
Card Adapter in the previous step, see "Running the Credit Card Adapter
Diagnostics Program" on page 25 to help resolve the errors.
NOTES:
1. After installation is complete, run the following commands to access the
LAN:
LSL NetWare Link Support Layer program
TOKEN IBM Token-Ring 16/4 Credit Card Adapter driver
IPXODI NetWare ODI Network driver
NETX NetWare workstation shell
2. If you want your computer to start the communication programs
automatically, add the commands in Note 1 to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
OS/2 INSTALLATION OVERVIEW

The OS/2-compatible installation environments are described in this section.
Use the installation procedures in one of the following sections to perform
the steps necessary for a successful installation.
Run the Credit Card Adapter installation program in a DOS window.
When installing the Credit Card Adapter on a computer with OS/2 installed,
you have the options to use:
o IBM NTS/2 (see "Overview - Installation with IBM Communication Programs
(and NDIS) (for OS/2)")
o Novell NetWare (see "Overview - Installation with Novell NetWare (for
OS/2)" on page 19)
OVERVIEW - INSTALLATION WITH IBM COMMUNICATION PROGRAMS (AND NDIS) (FOR OS/2)
Use the installation steps in this section when you have OS/2 and any of the
following communications programs:
o Network Transport Services/2 (NTS/2)
o OS/2 Extended Services Version 1.0
o OS/2 LAN Server Version 2.0 or 3.0
o TCP/IP for OS/2 Version 1.2.1
o OS/2 Communications Manager/2 Version 1.0

NOTES:
1. LAN adapter and protocol support (LAPS) is the configuration tool
that you will use during the installation of any of the LAN
communication programs listed here.
2. When you configured your computer for PCMCIA Socket Services 2.0 and
the resource map utility, device driver statements for socket
services and the resource map were added to your CONFIG.SYS file.
The device driver statements (for example, the device driver
statements on an IBM Micro Channel* machine are: "IBM2SS02.SYS" and
"ICRMU02.SYS") must be moved to the bottom of the CONFIG.SYS file
before you install the Credit Card Adapter. The Credit Card Adapter
installation program will move the files for you.
Perform either of the following installation procedures for the Credit Card
Adapter when using NDIS drivers and the LAN communication programs that are
listed in this chapter.
WHEN USING NTS/2 WITH OS/2 LAN SERVER 3.0 OR OS/2 COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER/2
1.0
1. Run the installation aid for LAPS.
NOTES:
a. Refer to the LAN Adapter and Protocol Support Configuration Guide for
____________________________________________________
information on "Installing Additional Network Adapter Drivers".
b. While running the LAPS installation aid, when you are prompted for
the additional network drivers diskette, insert the IBM Token-Ring
16/4 Credit Card Adapter diskette to load the IBM-supplied NDIS
driver.
c. Set the default ring speed to the correct ring speed for the network
to which you will connect.
2. Install the LAN communication program that you will be using.
3. Run the Credit Card Adapter installation program and select the NDIS/IBM
LAPS for OS/2 option. (To run the installation program, begin with step
1 on page 20.)
The installation program checks your version of OS/2 and verifies that
the correct version of Card Services is installed.
It also verifies that the device driver statements for socket services
and resource map utility are placed in the correct sequence in the
CONFIG.SYS file.
4. Install the adapter using the instructions in "Installing the Credit Card
Adapter" on page 23.

5. If any error messages are displayed after you have installed the Credit
Card Adapter in the previous step, see "Running the Credit Card Adapter
Diagnostics Program" on page 25 to help resolve the errors.
WHEN USING OS/2 EXTENDED SERVICES 1.0, OS/2 LAN SERVER 2.0, OR TCP/IP FOR
OS/2
1. Install the LAN communication program that you will be using.
2. Run the installation aid for LAPS. Refer to your LAN adapter and
protocol support documentation for information on installing additional
network adapter drivers.
NOTES:
a. While running the LAPS installation aid, when you are prompted for
the additional network drivers diskette, insert the IBM Token-Ring
16/4 Credit Card Adapter diskette to load the IBM-supplied NDIS
driver.
b. Set the default ring speed to the correct ring speed for the network
to which you will connect.
3. Run the Credit Card Adapter installation program and select the NDIS/IBM
LAPS for OS/2 option. (To run the installation program, begin with step
1 on page 20.)
The installation program checks your version of OS/2 and verifies that
the correct version of Card Services is installed.
It also verifies that the device driver statements for socket services
and resource map utility are placed in the correct sequence in the
CONFIG.SYS file.
4. Install the adapter using the instructions in "Installing the Credit Card
Adapter" on page 23.
5. If any error messages are displayed after you have installed the Credit
Card Adapter in the previous step, see "Running the Credit Card Adapter
Diagnostics Program" on page 25 to help resolve the errors.

OVERVIEW - INSTALLATION WITH NOVELL NETWARE (FOR OS/2)
Perform the following installation steps for the Credit Card Adapter when
using OS/2 and the Novell NetWare environment.
Prior to performing the installation procedures, determine which adapter
address (local or universal) you will be using.
o If you are using the locally administered adapter address (an adapter
address that you can assign that overrides the universally
administered address), continue with the procedures in step 1.
o If you are using the universally administered adapter address (an
adapter address that is permanently encoded in the adapter at the
time of manufacture, which is unique to the adapter), you must run
the Credit Card Adapter diagnostics to determine the universal
address. Use the following procedures to view the universal address:
a. Insert the Credit Card Adapter using the procedures beginning
with step 1 on page 23.
b. Run the Credit Card Adapter diagnostics program to determine the
adapter address using the steps in "Running the Credit Card
Adapter Diagnostics Program" on page 25.
c. Continue with the procedures in step 1.
1. Use the Novell NetWare instructions to install the NetWare files on your
computer system's disk drive.
WARNING: DO NOT REBOOT YOUR COMPUTER DURING THE NETWARE INSTALLATION.
YOUR SPECIFIC ENVIRONMENT VARIABLES WILL NOT BE SET UNTIL YOU PERFORM THE
CREDIT CARD ADAPTER INSTALLATION PROCEDURES (IN STEP 2).
NOTES:
a. Verify that you are installing the NetWare Requester for OS/2.
b. When requested to select the network interface card driver, enter
TOKEN.SYS to select the Token-Ring LAN driver from the Credit Card
Adapter diskette.
2. Install the Credit Card Adapter software using the installation
procedures in "Installing the Credit Card Adapter Software" on page 20.
During the installation procedures, select the option for the Novell
NetWare environment for OS/2.
NOTE: You need to change the default adapter address that is supplied by
the Credit Card Adapter installation program to a locally
administered address or to the universally administered address.
Contact your network system administrator if you do not know the
correct address to enter.

3. Install the adapter using the instructions in "Installing the Credit Card
Adapter" on page 23.
4. If any error messages are displayed after you have installed the Credit
Card Adapter in the previous step, see "Running the Credit Card Adapter
Diagnostics Program" on page 25 to help resolve the errors.
INSTALLING THE CREDIT CARD ADAPTER SOFTWARE
___________________________________________
Installing the adapter software consists of installing a device driver and,
if needed, a connectivity enabler.
To load the adapter software, use the Credit Card Adapter installation
program on the diskette that is packaged with these instructions.
To install this software, complete the following steps:
Step 1. Turn On (│) the power to the computer system.
Step 2. Insert the diskette into the diskette drive.
Step 3. At the DOS or OS/2 ready prompt, type:
A:install
where "A" is the diskette drive.
Step 4. Press ENTER.
Step 5. Follow the instructions on the installation panels as they appear.
The network environments that are supported by the installation
program are: NDIS and Novell NetWare. Select one of these options
from the main installation panel.
NOTE: Use the appropriate target directory name. The target
directory names are dependent on whether you are using OS/2
or DOS, and which network software you are using. If you are
using:
o DOS with Novell NetWare -- the target directory is the
directory that contains your Novell NetWare software.
o DOS with NDIS -- the target directory is the directory
that contains the LSP software.
o OS/2 with either Novell NetWare or NDIS, or DOS with
Native mode -- you do not need to select a target
directory.
However, for OS/2, you must specify the correct target
drive letter of your OS/2 system drive. (For example,

use "C:" or "D:" to specify the drive that contains the
OS/2 system files.)
FOR OS/2:
Select the appropriate OS/2 option.
FOR DOS:
The installation program checks your computer system for PCMCIA Card
Services.
o If PCMCIA Card Services 2.0 is installed, only the adapter
software driver is installed.
o If card services is not installed on your computer, the
installation program will allow you to install both the
connectivity enabler and the adapter software driver.
When you have finished the installation, store the diskette and this document
in a safe place. The diskette also contains the Adapter Diagnostics program
and Ring Diagnostics program.

INSTALLING/INSERTING AND REMOVING THE CREDIT CARD ADAPTER

During your initial installation of the Credit Card Adapter and during normal
use, you will insert and remove the Credit Card Adapter from you computer.
Follow the steps in:
o "Installing the Credit Card Adapter" to install or insert the adapter
o "Removing the Credit Card Adapter" on page 24 to remove the adapter.
INSTALLING THE CREDIT CARD ADAPTER
__________________________________
After the adapter software has been installed, complete the following steps
to install the Credit Card Adapter:
Step 1. Turn Off (O) the power to the computer system.
Step 2. Insert the adapter in the slot.
The adapter is keyed to go in one way only. If you feel resistance
before the adapter is fully inserted, remove the adapter, turn it
over, and reinsert it.
Step 3. Attach the Credit Card Adapter cable to the network cable. It is
keyed to attach to the network cable on one end only.

Step 4. Using one hand, attach the adapter cable to the adapter.
The cable is keyed to attach to the adapter one way only. If you
feel any resistance, remove the cable, turn it over, and attach it.
Step 5. Turn On (│) the power to the computer system.
REMOVING THE CREDIT CARD ADAPTER
________________________________
NOTE: Before removing the Credit Card Adapter, first disconnect the cable
from the adapter.
Follow these steps to remove the Credit Card Adapter:
Step 1. Turn Off (O) the power to the computer system.
Step 2. Using one hand, squeeze the sides of the Credit Card Adapter cable
where it attaches to the adapter and unplug it from the adapter.
The adapter cable is still connected to the network cable.
Step 3. Remove the adapter from the slot and store it in the adapter sleeve.

RUNNING THE CREDIT CARD ADAPTER DIAGNOSTICS PROGRAM

Use the Adapter Diagnostics program on the diskette to test the hardware
components of the Credit Card Adapter. This program is optional but can be
used if the Credit Card Adapter is not functioning as expected.
The Adapter Diagnostics program performs a series of tests and displays the
results of each one as passed or failed. If one or more of the tests fail,
______ ______
there is a problem with one or more of the adapter's components.
NOTE: The testing process may run as long as 2 minutes and must be completed
before you can resume working.
Verify that the network system software has been installed, and the cable and
network connections are secure. Complete the following steps to test the
Credit Card Adapter:
o If your computer has OS/2 installed:
Step 1. Insert the Credit Card Adapter diskette in the diskette drive.
Step 2. Turn On (│) the power to the system.
Follow the instructions as they appear.
o If your computer has DOS installed:
Step 1. Turn On (│) the power to the computer system.
Step 2. Insert the diskette in the diskette drive.
Step 3. At the DOS ready prompt, type:
a:trcctest
Step 4. Press ENTER. Follow the instructions as they appear.
o To use the Ring Diagnostics program, select that option and follow the
instructions as they appear.
o When you have finished running the diagnostics, remove the diskette and
turn Off (O) the power to the computer system.
If you have questions about any of the instructions, consult your system
administrator.
When testing is complete, store the diskette in a safe place.

If the diagnostics test for the Credit Card Adapter fails, check the cable
connections to be sure that they are secure. If the problem still persists,
contact the place where it was purchased.
