  14. SUBJECT:  OPS: Official Relay Stations - Part 2/2

  16.      While not all relay stations may have multi-band,
  17. multi-antenna, multi-operations facilities, such can come into
  18. play in certain situations.The more versatile the station the
  19. greater the likelihood the net will be well served. For example,
  20. the California Emergency Services Net utilizes both SSB and Amtor
  21. modes. In addition, the NCS can be involved in monitoring not
  22. only the main frequency, but off-channel nets or sub-nets as
  23. well. So, simultaneous multiple channel monitoring is an
  24. important factor, as is the ability to operate on or monitor two
  25. or more frequencies simultaneously.
  26.      The stations usefulness is enhanced with multi-line phones,
  27. FAX and Packet for rapid transmission of data in a variety of
  28. modes. While some of these may not be useful in certain
  29. emergencies, one or more are frequently in operation.
  30.      A further usefulness of the Official Relay Station is the
  31. addition of  equipment, with appropriate licensing, to operate on
  32. government frequencies. The State of Nevada, for instance,
  33. assigned a portable on California Operation SECURE system.
  34.      This article is based on experiences as an Official Relay
  35. Station with the California Emergency Services Net, as Deputy
  36. Chief Radio Officer of L.A. County Disaster Communications
  37. Service, as a Region Radio Officer and extended military
  38. experience. It is intended to assist any Net Control Station in
  39. obtaining reliable backup to essential communications in an
  40. emergency.
