  11. SUBJECT: OPS - CRITICAL INCIDENT STRESS
  12.      This is a topic we hope you don't experience, but if you do,
  13. perhaps this material may assist.
  14.      "Normal emotional reactions and accompanying symptoms
  15. experienced by emergency response personnel as responses to
  16. abnormal events are characterized as critical incident stress.
  17.      "Repression of these reactions can be unhealthy, especially
  18. for those who are exposed to this situation time and again.
  19. Agencies where the responders meet this situation repeatedly,
  20. such as the fire service, use critical incident stress debriefing
  21. (CISD). This provides  an  organized  approach in an atmosphere
  22. that allows for emotional ventilation and support, and provides
  23. the information that will allow them to better cope with the
  24. tragedies they may experience (like holding a person who dies in
  25. their arms)."
  26.      This came from an article in a CDF publication by Dan
  27. Oliver, CDF Safety Coordinator, who concluded, "...we are all
  28. human beings and we all have feelings which can be deeply scarred
  29. by these traumatic incidents. So talk about it, grieve over it
  30. and know that your being there did make a difference."
