Hi folks .. in a recent national msg i requested feedback on the
Ramsey VHF/UHF kits, here's the little that trickled in...
[ as an aside .. Nuts N Volts had a 2m receiver kit in March 92 issue
with the xmitter to follow "next month"]
-----
Did you read the article in "73" magazine about the Ramsey kits?
I thought I'd might give one a try for a "packet" dedicated 2
meter machine especially since it's reasonable and "true" FM
for high baud rate capability when ever you upgrade . The
other unit that sticks in the back of my mind is the Alinco
Data 1200T? Which is also true FM and gives you 25 watts for
less than $100 more!
If there is any way you can foward any interesting replies,
please do so! Thanks and 73. "Glen" KD6FQJ.

Subject: Re: ramsey vhf kits?
I built the 2 meter kit, and had some problems. First of all, it is very time
consuming to build. Not an evening kit! My pll would not lock on to the cor-
rect freq. It was off by enough that send and rec. were off by 5 khz. Worse on
xmit, becuse of the way the mixing takes place. Couldn't get any satisfaction
so shipped it off a month ago and still haven't heard anything. It was missing
some capacitors and some of the caps were a little difficult to identify. The
manual is good, receive is not really pleasat to listen too, rather sharp, but
is fine for packet. Good luck, and also haven't been able to find the 440 kit
yet over in Sacramento. 73, de Craig in Woodland

(.. this ones unsolicited ..)
I recently finished building and tuning a Ramsey FTR146
2 meter kit. I had occasion to call Ramsey twice for
some small problems, and they were quite helpful. Best of all
the radio worrks, both for voice and packet. I do have
only one remaining problem: I can only seem
to get 2 watts output, instead of the 5 claimed by
Ramsey, even after doing all they suggest in the manual.
(BTW, the manual is excellent) Has anyone else built
one of these kits? What has been your experience? If
I get many comments back, I will summarize and
post for general information.

I have the FTR-146. I think it make an excellant packet radio.
For packet I'm using PacComm Tiny-2. The kits are not to hard
to build but a Freq. counter &SWR/PWR meter are a must. Also
a digital volt meter helps. Hope this helps you.
