  4.      "That having been said, I will say also that with 7,000
  5. stores out there, I'm sure we'll find somebody who's a
  6. little greedy or misunderstood the rules who will sell one
  7. to somebody that shouldn't use it.  But as we explain in the
  8. HTX202 manual, you're going to be working mostly through
  9. repeaters; the hams on the repeater aren't going to play
  10. games with you.  They'll make a game out of finding out who
  11. you are and where you are."

  13.      Juge comments further that if the problem of selling
  14. ham gear for illegal purposes does exist, "it exists with
  15. all those little electronic shops up and down Fifth Avenue
  16. in New York that sell the entire Kenwood and Icom line,
  17. including the very latest dualband gear.  They tell people
  18. that nobody including the FCC cares.  That's where the
  19. problem is ... not with Radio Shack, where we've got 75 hams
  20. in Tandy Center probably and several hundred out in the
  21. field that we know about!"

  23.      It should be abundantly clear by now that there is no
  24. law against selling a ham transceiver to a non-licensee.  Ed
  25. Juge feels that's the way it should be.  "A lot of people
  26. are going to buy radios while they're waiting for their
  27. licenses to get familiar with proper operation by listening,
  28. which certainly is desirable.  A lot of hams won't believe
  29. this, but there really are people out there who buy gifts
  30. for their spouses who are ham radio related."

  32.      A few final notes are in order about the new Radio
  33. Shack HTX202 two-meter handheld.  Contrary to rumor, it's
  34. not being manufactured by Marantz Japan, Inc., whose
  35. communications division includes the internationally
  36. recognized Standard label.  Juge wouldn't say who is.  The
  37. only clue he gave was that "our product manager wrote the
  38. specifications, and it's being quality controlled to Radio
  39. Shack standards in the orient."

  41.      Accessories that come with the HTX202 include: a wall-
  42. type battery charger, battery, six-alkaline battery pack
  43. (batteries not included), belt clip, rubber ducky antenna,
  44. and wrist strap.  A speaker mike is available separately for
  45. $19.95 that, according to Juge, is compatible with Yaesu and
  46. Icom transceivers.  I all ready mentioned the optional five-year warranty.  And, says Juge, "you can finance the
  47. handheld for $15 a month!"

  49.      When you add it all up, Radio Shack may have finally
  50. come of age in the ham shack.
