This review actually covers the FT23R (2m), FT33R (220), and FT73 (440)
radios; I've owned each and have first-hand experience.
I've owned the FT23 for 3 years.
LIKES: All radios are small, but have a solid, hefty feeling to them. This
is because the PCB is encased in a zinc-alloy frame. I like this most because
my radios get a lot of use and sometimes get banged around. They are easy to
use and the FT23 is easily modified for out-of-band. They are extremely
reliable and have excellent transmit audio and a wide range of accessories
(which will be available for a long time since they also fit the FT411/470
series)
DISLIKES: My biggest dislike is that the LOCK function locks the keyboard,
but not the freq. knob on top. I've accidently changed frequency when I
thought the radio was locked. Some folks didn't like the absence of a dial
light, but I've seldom missed it. My pet peeve is that Yaesu sells the
belt-clip separate....like offering tires as an option for a car!
PROBLEMS: I haven't had a single problem in 3 years!
WOULD I BUY ANOTHER: I have bought 3!
IS THERE A BETTER RADIO FOR THE $: NO WAY! I could never figure out how ICOM
could sell IC2ATs for only a few bucks less than the FT23. It is rugged,
feature-rich, has excellent accessories, and is inexpensive. Although new
ones may not be available for too long, these will be excellent used buys.
