3V, TUNISIA. According to LX2KQ, German amateurs are saying that
3V8W is definitely a slim.  They have contacted DK2WV, the
individual who 3V8W says is his QSL manager, and he states he has
absolutely no knowledge of this operation.

5A0RR AND ROMEO (Excerpts from Romeo News Release, received by
Ed, NT2X). Romeo states, "Originally, plans called for the use of
six amateur radio operators for 5A, but due to the lack of
funding we had to limit ourselves to three operators: Said
(Libyan), who currently holds the call sign 5A0RR, Danny, LZ2UU
and myself. During the operation, which lasted five days, we
worked over 11,000 stations.

This DXpedition coincided with the International Arab Summit
being held in Cairo, so National security throughout the region
was at a fever pitch. The Dxpedition was terminated when Danny
and I were accused by Libyan counter-intelligence and Egyptian
police of planning to assassinate both President Mubarek and
Libyan Leader Quaddafy. To make matters worse and even more
bizarre, they said we were using ham radio as a cover for illegal
drug trafficking by communicating with Turkish ships in the ports
of Benghazi and Alexendria. We were both arrested and placed in
the Libyan prison and held incommunicado. This unpleasant
experience, the  details of which I will not go into at this
time, has caused my health to deteriorate greatly and I am
currently under doctor's care and receiving medical treatment.

Said, 5A0RR, will continue to operate from Libya under this call
sign  which is in effect for two years.  We left him an FT-990, a
FL-7000 amp and a Mosley antenna. He is an outstanding CW
operator but might be limited in his SSB operating since we
didn't have the opportunity to train him in this mode.

Copies of the 5A0RR logs are in Bulgaria. QSL's are being sent.
If my medical condition permits, I hope to travel to the United
States soon. At that time I will present the documentation for
the 5A-Libyan operation to the ARRL. I also have in my possession
the additional documentation  requested by the ARRL for the P5-
North Korean DXpedition." -  Warmest  regards. 73, Romeo,
3W3RR/AH0M/RV7RR/EK0RR/XY0RR/IS0RR/9D0RR/YA0RR/5A0RR and forty-
five other call signs.

In Romeo's release he also expressed his disappointment in the
support he received from the ham community during his ordeal. The
unwarranted and undeserved criticisms, along with false charges
disturbed him a great deal. Romeo's whole news release can be

9G1AA, CARDS (UPDATE). Cliff, AC4NJ, has informed OPDX that about
1000 cards would be sent out on August 20th. But as of Sunday
morning there were reports stating 1200 cards were mailed with
the possibility of 4000 more to arrive soon from the Netherlands
in bulk via air. The majority of the cards will arrive within the
next ten days or so. All cards should be out by the middle to the
end of September. Because of several pirates operating during the
9G1AA operations, "ONLY" those individuals that receive their
cards back with "NOT IN LOG" can call Cliff at 904-799-0708 to
re-check the logs or mail their returned card (with the "NOT IN
LOG" on it) with a SASE to AC4NJ. Cliff is not (REPEAT is not)
the QSL Manager for 9G1AA, but is just helping because of the
many "NOT IN LOG" contacts.

A5, BHUTAN. This is one of this week's interesting reports. There
is a report of an Orthopedic Surgeon comtemplating about getting
a ham ticket, because he has been invited by the Bhutan
government to teach surgery. They have also given him permission
to operate on the ham bands. His trip to A5 is scheduled to take
place January 1994. Stay tuned and KYFC!

KH9, WAKE ISLAND. Just a reminder of the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo
ARC  DXpedition to Wake Island (KH9) will take place next week.
Their  operating schedule is as follows: Hawaii (KH6) Aug 30 &
Sept 10-12,  Kwajalein (V73) Aug 31 and Wake Island (KH9)  Aug
31-Sept 10. Their activities will include: Oscar 13, 6 Meters,
10-160 meters (High Power), SSB, CW and RTTY. The operators are

(CALLS SUBJECT TO CHANGE):
Craig/KC6CEX, Javier/AH6MM, Craig/AH9B, Chris/AB6EV, Kirk/AH6ML
and Pat/NH6UY. There will be two fully operational stations
complete with beams, amps, computers, and "loads of candy bars
for the late hours". They will make a special effort to listen
for propagation to Europe and the East Coast.  Utilizing filters
and proper antenna placement, they will try transmitting two
signals on the same band to maximize QSOs in these needed areas.
They hope to work all on their propagation experiment DXpedition
to the Pacific.

PY0S, ST. PETER & ST. PAUL ROCKS. The NATAL DX Group is planning
a new DXpedition to here in January/February of 1994. Their plans
are to activate PY0S with four operators, running two stations
full time on CW/SSB, all bands including the WARC bands, RTTY, 6
meters (CW/SSB), packet and satellite operations. This will be
the first time that packet and satellite operation will be used
here. PT7WA will be the QSL Manager for CW/HF. QSL info for
SSB/PACKET/RTTY/6M was not mentioned, but we are sure it will be
forthcoming.

SV/A, MOUNT ATHOS. Nikos, SV2WT, has informed OPDX that Minoru,
JA3MNP, and himself do not have a license to operate from SV/A-
land and Monk Apollo, SV2ASP/A, is the only amateur licenced to
operate from Mount Athos. Both Nikos and Minoru will be going to
SV/A-land to donate equipment to Apollo for RTTY operations. They
may make 2 or 3 QSO's under the callsign of SV2ASP/A for testing
the equipment only. Nikos states that Apollo continues to be
inactive, but hopes this will end by the end of September. In the
information sent to OPDX, Nikos states, "Please I ask also to
amateurs around the world to send letters to  Apollo and tell him
to come back on the air".

TY, BENIN. Ken, WA4OBO (the earlier op at TT8OBO), will be
returing to the states on August 26th, but he will travel to
Benin and be active  Septmeber 12-21. His call sign will be
TY8OBO.

V2, ANTIGUA. Ron, G4DIY, will be active as V2/G4DIY until
September 1st. He will be active mainly on 14288 or 14260 kHz, or
on 15 meters if the band is open (check 21288 kHz).

ZK1, NORTH COOK ISLANDS. Dick, N7NKG, continues to be active
until  September 4th. He is using the call sign of ZK1XR from
Manihiki Atol (IOTA-014). He is to be active on both CW/SBB, but
has only been heard around 7007 kHz between 0815 and 0915z on the
Ohio/Penn Network. QSL via his CBA.

ZS9, WALVIS BAY (Maybe headed for DELETION?). From The New York
Times (Aug. 17) - "In the first decision by the multiparty forum
that will substantially alter the shape of South Africa,
negotiators agreed today to hand over its enclave at Walvis Bay
to neighboring Namibia as soon as possible.

A South African Government delegation, led by Foreign Minister
Roelof F. Botha, agreed under pressure from the African National
Congress and other opposition groups to transfer the enclave, 800
miles north of Cape Town on the Atlantic Ocean, and several
islands to Namibia." (ed. Does this mean maybe the Penguin
Islands too?)
