The DX Audio Service is an audio magazine for the blind which deals with
radio topics. In 1983, the founder of the DX Audio Service worked with
several radio clubs to provide information to a missing group of radio
listeners. Those were the blind radio listeners and DX'ers that had no
access to publications like the National Radio Club's "DX News" and other
magazine and books.
In 1985 a cooperative effort was made between the National Radio Club and
Fred Vobbe, the founder and editor of the DX Audio Service, and the first
publication was made in April. Since that time the DX Audio Service has
evolved, and when you listen to the magazine it's like listening to an All
News or Talk station that just deals with the subject of radio. The DX Audio
Service, (as the National Radio Club), is manned by volunteers whose only pay
is the satisfaction of getting this information out to DX'ers. The
subscription costs cover only the postage and operational costs involved in
this project.
Each issue starts out with news and notes read by Fred Vobbe. Then you
find out about the changes in the industry with Jerry Starr's "AM Switch"
column. Jerry informs listeners about new stations, changes in station
facilities, call letter changes, and much more.
John Bowker is next with the "Travellog". In the Travellog, John will
select a frequency and let you hear what the top of the hour Station ID
sounds like from stations on that frequency. Since his retirement from RCA
and NBC, John has made his unusual hobby open to the membership. John also
provides "Historical Moments In Radio" where he reads from press releases,
books, and magazines from the past.
Phil Wayne gives you a sample of what radio sounds like in certain towns
with "Market Scope". On the Market Scope you we start with the bottom part
of the AM band and go to the top, then switch to the FM side and do the same.
You hear all the stations that a person living in that town would normally
hear. Phil and friends have covered stations from Anchorage AK to New York
City.
We also feature news and notes from the National Radio Club and the
industry, and keep you in touch with such topics as Sports Networks, AMAX
Stereo, FMX, legal actions, and anything of interest to the radio listener.
From time to time you can also get a big dose of radio with "After Dark".
This cassette series is a 4 tape series, consisting of C-90 tapes, that
contains very detailed interviews and examples which are normally too long
for the DX Audio Service magazine. Fred Vobbe is the host of this series,
and gives you 360 minutes of interesting talk.
If you would like more information on the DX Audio Service, you can
contact the National Radio Club's Publication Center and request a sample
tape and information for $1.00. You will receive a sample tape, a catalog
of NRC Products, and information on joining. A yearly subscription to the DX
Audio Service is $25.00, and all tapes are sent via 1st class mail. The
address to write to is; National Radio Club, Box 164, Mannsville NY 13661.
