ARLP028 Propagation de KT7H
Solar activity was low last week. On Sunday, July 11, high
geomagnetic activity drove up the K index to five which made
propagation difficult over high latitude paths. The worst
conditions were around 0300 to 0600z, but it took nine more hours
before the K index dropped to below three. Since then conditions
have improved a bit with a small rise in the solar flux and many
periods with a K index of zero.
Look for solar flux to slowly rise through the rest of the month,
peaking around 110 in the first week of August. The geomagnetic
field will be mostly unsettled, with more upsets likely around July
21 and 29, caused by recurring coronal holes.
Scott Craig, WA4TTK, has written a great program for the MS DOS PC
which graphs the solar data from the weekly ARRL Propagation
Bulletin. Look for details in upcoming editions of this bulletin
telling how to get this software for free. The program already
contains solar data for the past couple of years, and the data file
is structured to allow easy entry of new sunspot and flux data as it
becomes available.
Sunspot Numbers from July 8 through 14 were 63, 63, 49, 45, 60, 76
and 92, with a mean of 64. 10.7 cm flux was 93.3, 90.2, 86, 83,
85.8, 86.6 and 92.6, with a mean of 88.2.
The path projection for this week is from Woodstock, NY to Angola.
80 meters should be open from 2300 to 0600z, peaking from 0100 to
0500z. Look for 40 meter openings from 2230 to 0630z, with the best
times from 0030 to 0330z. 30 meters should be open from 2100 to
0300z, and again from 0530 to 0700z. The best path should be around
2300 to 0230z. Look for 20 meters to start gradually improving
around 1900z, reaching a peak in the hours before dropping off
around 0230z. 17 meters should be open on some days from 1730 to
2100z, and again around 0000z. 10, 12 and 15 meters do not look
good over this path.
