COURSE: Troika Links
DESIGN: Art Steiger
DATE: April-May, 1993
TROIKA LINKS
Dear Golfer,
At the personal request of Ivan Troika, owner-manager of the
above-named golf course, you have been invited to enjoy the amenities
of the facility, courtesy of Mr. Troika.
It has come to our attention that your personal skills have
become nearly legendary in your home state. We are inviting the 50
best golfers in the country to our course with all expenses paid as a
way of extending our thanks for their dedication to, and their
enthusiasm for, the game
By the way, you will note from the enclosed map that the tee and
green of hole 10 are accessible only by water. Several small row
boats are moored near said hole, and you must use these to travel
to-and-from it. We regret this inconvenience, but our course
designer regarded bridges as SO unsightly (and expensive), that we
decided to take this alternate (and less costly) method of
navigation. That you in advance for your understanding.
=====================================================================
The most obvious problem one encounters when designing a par 3
course is how to keep the holes both interesting and challenging from
the first tee to the eighteenth green. I tried to avoid ideas that
were unbearably cute (although I hope I will be forgiven the boats on
the 10th!) or featured contrived difficulties that rendered them both
unrealistic and unplayable. Instead, I tried to concentrate on three
elements: 1) to mix up the length of the holes, so the player would
be required to hit a full range of irons; 2) to vary the shape and
contours of the greens, so a variety of putting skills could be
tested; and 3) to encourage draws and fades off the tee (with some
holes requiring arrow-straight tee shots thrown in!). I hope I've
been at least reasonably successful in attaining these goals, and
have placed enough variety in the course so that the potential
monotony of one-par-3-after-the-other is not too intrusive.
This course is a quick play! Normally, you'll only hit about 50
strokes, and can thus complete a round in much less time than a par
72 course. This is one of the reasons I designed it. I didn't
always have the time--or inclination--for a full-blown 18, but wanted
something more than just the first 9 before I clicked the save
button. I hope you find it worth the time of a download.
NOTE: Be sure to create one (or more) players for use ON THIS
COURSE ONLY! If you don't, your stats will obviously be distorted,
inasmuch as you will be averaging a short, par 54 course with the
longer, par 72's.
Credits and thanks to the following: To George Rodriguez III,
for his GR3OBJ02.ZIP file, which has provided me with more terrific
objects than I've found in any other source.
To Mark Alan Willett for his ISLES.ZIP file from which I've used
the bench/ball washer icon, and for his SCORPSE.ZIP file, from which
I've used his large rock formation.
To Brian Silvernail, for his ROLLING.ZIP file from which I
borrowed a ground foliage object.
The background is the same as my earlier course, PINEHILL (it
just seemed the most suitable), and it is an extensive reworking of
the SPANISH BAY course by Scott Chesney.
The remaining objects are either from commercially released JNSE
products, or are original. By the way, Ivan Troika is as fictional a
being as is the present golf course!
Finally, a hearty thanks to the people and programmers at
Accolade who provided us with such a marvelous product, and without
which none of us would be having any of the fun we're having! Please
feel free to communicate your thoughts concerning this, or my other
courses, WILDWOOD and PINEHILL, either via the Accolade BBS (my user
ID is Graf), or by mail:

This course is offerd FREE to the JNSE community for their personal
use via the Accolade BBS. If you subsequently upload it to other
BBS's, please keep all files intact and unaltered.
