CARNOUSTIE GOLF CLUB
ORIGINAL JNUG DESIGN BY: JAY JOHNSON
ADAPTED FOR JNSE BY: GORDON CHISHOLM
A while back I was looking through my library of JNUG
courses, and decided I would try my hand at updating some of
the better ones for JNSE. One of the courses I found
languishing in JNUG "never-never land" was Carnoustie. A fine
old established course, well done in JNUG by Jay Johnson, but
forgotten in the rush of new, better, courses being brought
out for JNSE.
First order of business was to create the OMM and DZV
files, and eliminate the unnecessary JNUG files. With that
out of the way, I started looking for appropriate JNSE
objects to replace the JNUG objects in the file.
I chose several JNSE links type courses; among them were
St. Andrews by Lee Ritze, Nairn by Brent Blackburn, Killybegs
by Jeff Lively, and Sunningdale (designer unknown). I also
"borrowed" an object or two from THE Country Club by Scott
Chesney because I could not find other objects That worked
right with the course. The background came from Brian
Silvernail's excellent course, Rolling Evergreen.
A few objects were sparingly added to Jay Johnson's
original object layout, but no hole has more than 100 objects
on it, to try and stay with the sometimes stark look of
Carnoustie. As JNSE objects were added to the file global
changes were done on the course, so that the JNUG objects
could be deleted.
Once I had all objects changed to JNSE, I went to work
on the color pallette. What I finally decided on is a sort of
mixture of the color pallettes from St. Andrews, Nairn, and
Killybeg. I think it depicts the sometimes drab, bleak look
of most links courses in Great Britain.
Since JNUG did not have a Championship tee, most pro
tees were moved forward of their original location to allow
for the four tees in JNSE. On two or three holes all tees
were slightly repositioned, taing care to not affect the
yardage of the hole any more than necessary. All yardgaes
should be fairly close to Jay Johnson's original layout.
There were some "cosmetic" changes made around the tee
and green areas on all holes, and around the bunkers on
several holes. No elevation changes were made to any of the
greens or bunkers, but elevations of tee areas were changed
where I thought it necessary. On several holes where none
existed, cart paths were added to allow for crossing a
stream. Where these were added they should not come into play
unless you're really a bad shot.
All tee blocks were checked to make sure they were level
and that all tees were on the tee blocks. All pin placements
were checked to insure they were on the greens. No pin
placements were moved.
On all hole overheads you will find the name of the hole
in one of the four corners (most normally the lower left).
This wasn't really necessary, but I decided it added
something to the look of the course. I don't think they will
be seen or come into play from the tee areas.
The landplot was "dressed up" with a nameplate and
appropriate credits.
I hope you enjoy what I've done with Carnoustie. I
enjoyed playing it in JNUG, and will probably enjoy it just
as much in the JNSE update. Any comments are welcome; either
on Prodigy (for the present), America Online, or NVN (in the
near future).
