  65.         The size of the compressed version of this file is deceptive.
  66.         When uncompressed it expands to 3.5 mb of disk space! *Do not*
  67.         attempt to uncompress the file unless you have lots of space
  68.         on your hard drive . . .  enough to accommodate both it *and*
  69.         the database file you will probably want to create from it.

  72.         What is it?

  75.         This file is a DBase formatted database of holdings in
  76.         Victoria libraries which are of value and interest to family
  77.         historians researching their Ontario roots.  The sources
  78.         include the holdings of the Greater Victoria Public Library
  79.         (GVPL), the University of Victoria Library (UVic), the Library
  80.         of the Victoria Genealogical Society (VGS), and one private
  81.         library . . .  that of Anna Joan Buxton (BX).  The
  82.         abbreviations for these libraries are shown because they are
  83.         employed in the 'library' field of the database itself.

  86.         Purpose

  89.         This file is intended to be imported into your favourite
  90.         database.  As it is in DBF file format, it can be imported
  91.         into most popular databases.  Though you could print out the
  92.         entire file on paper (don't try it . . .  it's big!), it is
  93.         far more effectively used in electronic key word searches.
  94.         If you do feel the urge to print, it would be better to
  95.         produce focus reports which 'fit' the subject you are
  96.         currently researching.  These focus reports are also useful
  97.         when you are planning a visit to a particular library, in
  98.         that you can pre-plan the areas of the library to search in
  99.         and target individual books as well.

  102.         Field Structure

  105.         There are seven fields to this database structure.  All are
  106.         character fields.  Along with their field lengths, the names
  107.         of the fields are as follows:

  120.                    It has been found that this .DBF file imports
  121.           perfectly using the File Express flatfile database
  122.           program when a Dbase style is specified for the input
  123.           file.  Use the field size exactly as specified above.

  126.         Usefulness to Genealogists Outside Victoria
  127.         -------------------------------------------

  129.         Victoria is not unique in having such a large repository of
  130.         Ontario holdings.  Most of the entries are books and
  131.         periodicals which are available in many cities . . .  and if
  132.         not, they're always available through interlibrary loan.
  133.         Because of this, the database will be of use to anyone
  134.         researching Ontario family history, no matter where they are
  135.         located.

  138.         Information From the Buxton Library
  139.         -----------------------------------

  141.         Anna Joan Buxton's private collection is noteworthy because
  142.         of its large and growing collection of Ontario cemetery
  143.         listings.  80% of these were acquired during her work over
  144.         the years for the Ontario Genealogical Society.  Many of the
  145.         collection have been integrated into a computerized 'pointer'
  146.         database consisting of over 33,000 names with soundex codes.
  147.         This database will soon be uploaded to the Genealogical
  148.         Software Distribution System (GSDS).

  151.         Can I Contribute?
  152.         -----------------

  154.         The Victoria Genealogical Society has an active and
  155.         enthusiastic group of Ontario researchers . . .  but we're
  156.         far from Ontario.  As a result we've had to hunt for, collect
  157.         and build our own information sources.  We would be most
